What a happy ending! The miller's daughter gets to keep her child and all of her forest friends who helped her will be boiled and eaten and killed and boiled and eaten again. What a great display of true friendship.

This was fairly faithful to the original tale, except for the fact that there is no wizard in it at all, and no animals (let alone a unicorn...!), instead she sent messengers into the woods who reported his name to her. The end of Rumpelstilzchen is pretty close though, only that when he stamps his foot and it gets caught in the ground, he then accidentally tears himself apart.

@aMgVbros4aetas I didn't know about that in the Grimm story. I remember on a musical version of "Rumplestiltskin" with actor Billy Barty playing as Rumplestiltskin, as soon as the miller found out that his name was Rumplestiltskin, his anger words were "I have been swined, robbed, tricked, the devil told you that", and then he screamed with steam coming out of his ears and stomped his foot, and a fire pit opened underneath him and he fell inside the fire pit and then the floor closed.

2.) Rumpelstiltskin's desire for the child was an old myth that warned children not to go out by themselves or else, hobgoblins, dwarfs, etc. would steal them and replace them with changelings of their own kind.

I love the alternative story of Rumplestiltskin, where the magical dwarf was actually an elf that helped the miller's daughter out of sympathy and in the end fell in love with her, making a joke that "he would have her first child". After she became queen and gave birth to a daughter and realized that the king never loved them, she called upon the elf to take her away, which he gladly did and married the miller's daughter. lol pony-corn >U

I'll admit...I've never seen another Rumpelstiltskin movie or actor, but this actor was amazing. But I also think that he WAS the one done wrong, for all we know he could have raised the child to have an even better life (not mate with it or kill it for supper as many have thought :/ All in all, this was all very well acted by all and I took like notice of the cheapness (compared to today's standards, I guess) in things they used.

Did you know that Herve Villechaize was applying real emotion to that scene, not just acting? He was getting out alot of frustration and anger. Shelley Duvall's reaction to this is genuine, she was actually frightened by it.

I suppose this fairy tale could be considered to have a moral about not making deals with the devil, so to speak. Bare in mind that most of the well known fairytales were originally meant purely for entertainment, it is only in more modern times that the morality play element got introduced.

@aMgVbros4aetas I wasn't familiar with the Grimm story but, it's nice to hear what it was about with Rumplestiltskin. I remember reading a book on Rumplestiltskin where the miller said his name and Rumplestiltskin was holding a magical flying spoon and he said "the devil told you that" and he was stomping with anger on his flying spoon then he climbed on top of his flying spoon and flew away on it like a witch.
@afriendofbean

Do you mean from 6:53-7:02? If so, I think he was just disappearing because maybe a spell was put on him that if the miller finds out what his name is, he will disappear and die. (Whoever put the spell on him, I guess it was taking time for the spell to work which is why nothing was happening to him from 5:51-6:52 or maybe he was given sixty seconds of last words). I thought he was disappearing because he was stomping and screaming where I thought his foot got caught in the floor at 6:53).
@afriendofbean

The only reason why Rumpelstiltskin was giving the miller a chance to keep her baby because she started to cry which made him feel sad and start to cry. So I wonder if she never guessed his name (of course, in the story the miller is supposed to get his name) all she has to do is cry and Rumpelstitlskin will start to cry too and say "please don't cry, I don't like to cry" and then maybe he would say "okay, you can keep the baby" or he would give her more extra days to figure out his name.

@sugarmagnolia17 unfortunately that is untrue. All film is based on the cummunity of the time, moral, and such. there is no film on earth that is not meant to sway you into thinking a specific way. Obvious representations are All Disney films, Barbie Films, and popular movies such as 2012. others that must be researeched in great depth are Fatal Attraction, Alien, Rosemary's Baby, and MORE.
