I'm a man. I like fairness. I also like honestly and I am really pleased that Fu Yuanhui's interview is getting this coverage. I am pretty disgusted by the statements below where the importance of discussing women's biological processes is dismissed so readily. Yes, periods are natural and yes, both men and women known this. But how often are periods referred to in any meaningful way? Given that it is a process affecting just under 50% of the (pre-menopausal (please forgive me, I don't know a better way to describe this or indeed what really goes on after the menopause...my bad)) population I think that the levels of ignorance you hear regarding periods is shocking. In fact, aside from the discussion triggered by Yuanhui's remarks I can't think of a single discussion about periods that didn't go something along the lines of "damn, what is up with her today?" - "must be on the blob" - "oh yes, how witty you are etc.". So in summary I think it is good that people talk about periods in a more nuanced way. Also that they recognise that a thing beyond a woman's control can have very real effects both on athletic performance, behaviour and general well being. Furthermore, while some posters have dismissed the severity of the impact of a period on a woman (and while it is true that there are some remedies to mitigate the stomach cramps and anemia that can follow), if they don't acknowledge that for some women it can be pretty debilitating then they really are guilty of misogyny and minimising another's suffering simply because they don't see/experience it themselves.

“This isn’t an excuse” it literally is though. It fucks your body up in so many different ways, whether it be the cramps themselves, affecting your MENTAL and physical stamina, nausea, lightheadedness from the loss of iron, directly affecting your bowels. Any doctor will tell you that in certain cases the effects of your period can absolutely be debilitating. Especially for an athlete who has to perform their very best, come on now.

I beg your pardon. It should not be considered "an excuse" if a woman cannot perform at high standards during her period. Whilst some women are lucky to not have much discomfort, some of us can have 3-5 days of moderate to severe to excruciating pain.
