Thanks for making this video. I see it was uploaded 12 years ago but I own a 40 year old Audi with the fuel filter in the exact same spot looking identical. And this video really helped me out. It's good to know I don't need any special procedures to bleed the system other than just starting it for a bit. Hoping mine will come loose as easily as yours did. Thanks again.

Ahhhh memories. We had a 1999 Audi A4 Avant (wagon) with the 1.8L turbo. I loved that car. Biggest mistake is we didn't buy it from the lease. Bought a 2001.5 VW Passat which was very similar. Both cars had the fuel filter underneath the car in front of the rear axle. Not hard to replace but had to jack it. This is a good idea putting it where you can get to it! Nothing beats driving a German engineered vehicle.. as you know.

This is a relief knowing that’s it’s easy to access. Unlike cars today where they filter is somewhere back by the gas tank, or even worse buried in the tank where you have to drop the tank. I have a 97 A6 Quattro with 185 thousand miles, and I love it. I appreciate your videos, they have been a big help. Though like you it does seem like that I’m always working on something with the car. Thanks again!

I have one of these and i love the car 210k so far so good. One day car wouldnt start and i thought it was a fuel pump, turned out o be just a clogged filter. These are very good cars, just take care of them very well.

I have a scanner that has the attachment to connect it to the OBD I port for our cars. It is not a universal scanner, but a scanner for just VAG Products. It does read the transmission TCM (transmission Control Module). Your videos on the Audi has helped me many of time (changed the timing belt and water pump based on your water pump video), just returning the favor.

It would have been better if you would have turned the ignition on and off several times to prime the pump. I have a 95 A6 as well and with minimal issues i have put an easy 200,225 miles on it and still going. Just changing a torn CV boot and a brake caliper that is sticking but otherwise its still a great comfortable car that can still cruise at 130 mph without much hassle, keep it running and keep posting

The fuel pump is accessed through the trunk. You can only feel around in there blindly. If you can empty the fuel before you start it will make the job a lot easier. You can do it with fuel in the tank, but your arm will go numb from being in the fuel. I did this job along time ago and it's not too hard to do. Getting the pump out of it's holder in the tank is the hardest part since you can't look down there while your hands are in the access hole. Good Luck!

@upallnight888 I have a scanner, but it only reads OBDII not OBDI. The weather is getting nicer out, so I hope to be able to diagnose it and fix it. I'll let you know if I need your scanner. Thanks for the offer!

the copper washer actually isn't a washer at all. It acts as a gasket when the steel hardware is torqued. The copper conforms perfectly to the the harder material (steel), crushing it and creating a liquid tight seal. This is known as a "crush gasket".

Thats an easy filter to get to but looks like it makes a mess! Funny how it had no pressure when you pulled the lines. I know when I change the filter on my Ranger (mounted on the inside of the drivers side frame rail) I pull the fuel pump relay and start the engine until it runs out of gas. I forgot to do that once before I pulled off the line from the filter....I won't forget again!! Haha. A face, eyes, and mouth full of gas isn't fun.

@upallnight888 The car shifts into 3rd or 4th gear at 5mph and the car wants to stall. If I apply the brake the car shifts back into first and shifts correctly, as soon as I take my foot off the brake the trans shifts all over the place. Ant of this sound like what you were dealing with?

What would be so difficult about keeping the filter in the same place on al models, or at minimum keep the same type fuel filter whether it is a 4/6/8 cylinder. Different size wrenches is stupid but at least filter is in a pretty reasonable access location.
