Very good lens if you have Fujifilim X-H1 and is a professional photographer. Just for travel this lens is too heavy, and you are better suited with XF 18-55 or a pair of primes. After two holiday trips where it was left home reason weight I sold it.

Great vid Matt- and fairly spot on. I have had 3 copies of that wretched little kit lens over the years and don't like it at all. Each time I thought I had a dud so bought another one. The 16-55 is from another planet compared to the crumby kit 18-55. Also - unlike what most people say, you don't really need OIS in these focal lengths. I am glad it does not have it because it would have been even bigger and more expensive. No it's not too big - I take this one lens everywhere and it saves me hauling around 3 or 4 other primes (which it covers same focal lengths and is just as sharp). This is the best lens that Fuji make, and unlike what most people say it actually focuses faster than my 90mm F2. Philip philipsuttonphotography.com

Philip, I do so agree with you. I’ve bought the 16-55 recently and, man, wish I’d bought this way sooner. The size and weight always held me back, but actually, it shoots very comfortably on my XT2. For landscape photography, I found the extra 2mm at the wide end was the clincher for me upgrading from the 18-55. The IQ seems to be significantly better too. I don't miss OIS and have shot this handheld at low shutter speeds and got acceptably sharp results when viewed on my 4k monitor. Perhaps the extra heft of the lens helps you hold it more steadily?

IMHO 1) if you want 16mm and zoom - get 16-50 it’s lighter and still sharp enough for landscapes and video 2) if you want wider angle and better iq for landscape get 12 or 14 mm lenses they are gorgeous 3) if you want travel lens wait for 16-80 it will arrive soon next year it will have wr and ois P.s. don’t buy heavy lenses with fuji if it’s not meant to sit on tripod for 98% of the time. The whole thing with mft and fuji is portability and joy of use, with 16-55 it will be very VERY front heavy and it’s a problem if you’re holding it for more then 30 mins. Also some of 16-55 has focus issue - if you pull just a little zoom ring focus will be completely missed so keep an eye on this if you will buy one (normally they not losing focus at all or just a little bit when you zoom for few mm)

To me it seems Fuji are reluctant to include all the best features in one lense which is why I feel, (as a non Fuji shooter), there's a confusing collection of similar focal length lenses, I keep hearing faster aperture ones are slower focusing, some have IS some don't and the same for weather sealing.

Neither the 16-55 or 50-140 appeal to me. I still own the a 5D III along with a 24-70 / 70-200 F2.8. Those larger lenses are better balanced on a FF DSLR camera and while I own Fujifilm cameras as well, I still feel anyone looking at those lenses are better off with FF systems (Nikon/Canon - Sony possibly, but those don't feel good in the hands with those size lenses). I came into Fujifilm after an injury put me on weight restrictions. My intent was to sell it and go back to Canon after I healed. It is a credit to Fujifilm that I elected to keep using both systems, but with the lighter primes and zooms.

The term 'KIT' should not apply to the Fuji 18 to 55 mm f 2.8 - 4 OIS. It is, like so many Fuji lenses, an amazing lens and highly underestimated by those who are unfamiliar with it. This is 2020, it can handle low light and much more beautifully. The OIS is superb.
@Nathansmithphotography

I have then 16-55mm f2.8, and out of eight Fuji lenses, it is my most used Fuji lens. The lack of OIS hasn't been a problem, and it wasn't an issue when I owned the excellent Nikon 17-55mm f2.8 lens. One thing that wasn't really touched on in the video, and it is a BIG deal, is the fact that it goes to 16mm. MANY people have the kit 18-55mm lens, and then turn around and buy the 16mm prime, which is an excellent lens. But doing this actually costs MORE!!! I often shoot my 16-55mm f2.8 at 16mm, and according to some reviews, this lens is sharpest at 16mm. I've honestly not had a burning desire to buy the 16mm after buying the 16-55mm f2.8, as I have the 23mm f1.4 for low light, and actually find 23mm a more useful focal length at weddings, general photography, etc. I also own the great 10-24mm f4 lens, but since getting the 16-55mm f2.8, I use the 10-24mm lens much less. And while I own the 56mm f1.2, this lens can take excellent portraits as you point out Matt at 55mm. This lens, while large and heavier than many Fuji lenses, weighs MUCH LESS than the Nikon equivalent (900g) or Canon (804g-probably less than Nikon because of all the plastic). Also, as you mention Matt, it goes to 82.5mm equivalent, not 70mm. Last thing: I see people complain about the lack of OIS and the size and weight on forums, but something NO ONE complains about, the focusing speed. I never have issues wishing it would focus faster, and the image quality is PRIME quality. LOVE this lens!

Funny you mention that, I'm just about to trade my 18-55 kit lens and the 16mm f1.4 for the 16-55 tomorrow. The 16mm 1.4 is undoubtedly an incredible lens but the focus lenghth is a little too wide for my liking. I'd rather just have one versatile lens and a few small F2 primes.

As always, a very informative and entertaining video. I own the 18-55 but rented the 16-55 to do my own side by side comparison about a year ago. I was immediately turned on by f2.8 throughout, however completely turned off by the size and weight of the 16-55. I knew within about an hour of having both lenses in hand that I would not be carrying the 16-55 every time I go out the door as I do now with my 18-55. Of course, this is my opinion only, but I highly recommend to anyone who is interested in the 16-55, rent it first! Cheers!

@@Kit2Canada I've paired my trusty X-T30 with a 18-55 for three days and MIGHT be falling in love with the lens. Until now, I've been a 'pixel peeper' who trapped himself in two focal distances: a 14mm prime and a 56mm prime. Only now, with the 18-55, have I realised how limiting (and draining) I've found it being locked into two distances with the two primes. I'll still keep the amazing f1.2 56mm prime in my bag for low light, strong bokeh/separation or certain distances but, so far, the 18-55 seems liberating with capital L! I have enough money to do what could be a comprehensive upgrade to an X-T4 and a 16-55mm f2.8 lens, but that would be twice the weight of my current combination and I'm not convinced I'd carry it around as comfortably or as often (being an amateur). As they say, the worst shots are the ones you never take.

The 18-55 is nearly perfect. It has prime-like quality at every focal length! Decent aperture. Crazy sharp. Quiet. Fast. Compact. Although 18-55 f2.8-4 is not very sharp at its wide end, it is a nice lens but only as a kit for 300 Euro, otherwise it will cost up to 600 Euro which is insane. Unfortunately there is no other options to choose, 18-135 is even less sharp, 16-55 is much more expensive, bulkier, and without IOS, 16-50 is slow and not very sharp also, so 18-55 is the best kit lens for fuji as fanboys like to call it, just it is not extremely sharp as many believe.

I tested both lenses and must say that the 16-55 is absolute worth upgrading. At f2.8 the 18-55 lacks sharpness and I had to bump it to f5.6 to equal the 16-55 at f2.8. Also the 18-55 lacks contrast in general. I took several raw files with the same composition. The 16-55 raw files were straight out of the camera so no post editing here. I had to edit the hell out of the 18-55 raw files in LR to somehow equal the 16-55 raw files in term of contrast and sharpness. Ok, the 18-55 is good for what it is but the 16-55 blows it away.

Perhaps you should try meditation or something to bring yourself back under self control Jon. Not being able to watch a video because the background music actually annoyed you too much is a sign that you are much too highly stressed. This is very bad for you dude. Stress produces cortisol which inhibits serotonin and testosterone production so you wanna try and find ways to relax :)

@@AnarchicImage I just though the music was shite and too loud, simple. Maybe I should try some deep focus breathing to relax.

@@jonspoard8416 I would do mate. Having a different taste in music to me is perfectly fine. Being annoyed to the point of having to shut the video off is probably a red flag. I recommend reading Eckhart Tolle's book The Power of Now.
