I haven't had this problem in the last 6 years of using Fuji SDs on my Macs, but I must say I am running Catalina, and the SD cards always appear on my Desktop as an "Untitled" icon. However, I agree with you that Fuji should give the card a clearly recognizable name. Thanks for your wonderful channel, I'm always looking for Fridays!

Actually, it should not be the job of the camera to set the name of the drive. It should be upon the user when that user accesses the drives content in a pc or mac. Why? because in a camera, the drive name doesn't really matter because most cameras only have 1 sdcard and if there's two, most of the time, they just label it as sdcard 1 and 2. The drive's name will only become significant once you use it in a computer.

Yes! I thought I was the only one dealing with this. It happened after updating to Big Sur. I've chatted with Apple support about it and even though they couldn't help me, they were able to help discover another work around. If you go into Finder preferences and under General choose "Show these items on items on the desktop > External disks, the nameless SD card will show up on the desktop. This is just *slightly* easier than going into Disk Utility. Thanks so much for this video! I hope it helps catch some needed attention!

Had that problem, never had used “disk utility”, didn’t know it existed! Thanks! In practice most of the time I connect my iPad to X-S10 WiFi, select keepers , and upload. Upload can take 10 minutes, but overall I find the discipline of shooting fewer exposures and choosing best examples helps me. Also did this with my Leica C-Lux on a 2019 Danube cruise with in-laws, when I only had an hour before breakfast to myself. Had to squeeze all my culling, processing and Flickr posting into that slot. Shot jpeg, didn’t bring the Mac on the trip, got dozens of keepers per day. Upload from card would have been faster, but I used the time to drink espresso. 😎

It‘s a Finder bug that has appeared with Big Sur. Before, it worked fine. How I know that it‘s the Finder? I use Forklift (an alternative file manager), and it shows the card just fine. The operating system sees it, other file managers see it, it‘s just the Finder that ignores it. This was discussed on a German mac forum a while ago, and weirdly enough, not all people on Big sur had the problem.

I noticed this problem starting with macOS 10.15 Catalina when they went full on 64-bit. In Finder>Preferences>General, if "External Disks" is checked the SD Card will show up as "Untitled-1" on the desktop. I think all that needs to be done is that when Fujifilm formats the camera it needs to use a name like other manufacturers do instead of "Untitled" and it will show up in the sidebar of the Finder.
@albertloan396

I have the same issue, but the way I solved it was simpler: In your sidebar where you are expecting to see the SD card appear, just click on the computer option, whatever you've named your main computer should be at the top of the "Locations" list. That will bring you to a list list that will include your "Network" and any external drives. You will see it in the list there. Don't know why it does not appear in the sidebar as other SD and external drives appear, but at least it's just one click away. Hope that helps.

It's actually a problem with Big Sur. There is a bug in Mac that means anything that has the default SD card name of "untitled" won't show up in finder or desktop. If you want to look at something more curious, if you format an SD card in the XT4, and it's larger than 32gb it will be formatted to exFAT. This format can't be read by Mac either, so you need to plug in the XT4 and use image capture to load your photos instead of reading the SD card directly.

I'm running macOS Big Sur and always use either image capture or photos to transfer my photos. I don't every remove the SD card and leave the camera on "USB card reader" mode and plug the camera into the computer directly with a USBC cable which makes it readable through photos, image capture, and Final Cut. Like others have said, the card also shows up on the desktop. The are just some really easy ways to transfer files from the camera.

But as soon as I take videos longer than say 4 minutes, it plays back in the camera but appear broken in Mac finder - it takes about 4.29 Gb, and playback stops after that 4 minutes. As a Windows user i've renamed my SD cards within the explorer. As you, i always format those cards in my X T3 ( previously in my Nikon D700 and even a Fuji X M1). And when i plug them back in my computer after a shooting, the name always remains. Neither a name the camera decides to assign to it ( as in your Canon example ) nor a name your OS decides not to recognize. May be i've been lucky with choosing systems that respect my choices rather than systems thinking they're so much more smarter.

Assume this is a problem just for direct file transfer and I know this is the preferred option for some. I’ve recently converted from pc to M1 MAC Mini and tbh didn’t now this issue existed because I normally download my sd cards via Lightroom, which allows me to not only download and save my files but also to save to a backup drive at the same time. Still, seems to be an oversight from Fuji and/or Apple. Good luck with the subscriptions, love the channel.

hello chris how are you? I'm new to the world of Fuji (used Sony), and I'm learning a lot from its contents. one bad thing that's been happening to me, when I put the camera (an XT3) plugged into the Mac, it just doesn't show up in the Finder with the option to copy the files directly from SD to the computer, I can only copy it using App Photos or I always have to put the SD in a card reader and then plug it into the Mac. Another thing that happens is that when I copy the videos I recorded straight from the camera to the Mac (using Final Cut, or any other import method ), videos are limited to 4.29GB, that is, if my file was with 20GB, it imports a video that lasts up to a few minutes and then freezes. If I put SD in card reader and plug in Mac, videos are imported normally. thank you and a hug from Brazil.

I let them untitled, because I do like you and reformat them everytime I start a new shooting, and the Macs do recognize them straight away as "Untitled", wether from the card slot on my Air or into the card slot in my plugged BENQ screen. So I suppose you have potentially a problem with Big Sur (I stayed with High Sierra on my ancient MB Air, and on Mojave on my Mac Mini), or else, with some conflict with another software, maybe a driver of some sort you'd have on your Macs?

I may have found a fix for you. I am on the latest OS X, Big Sur 11.2.3 and while I can't get it to show on the LOCATIONS on the sidebar in finder, I can get it to show in Favorites at the top. Simply plug in the card, and under locations expand your computer (or if you don't have your computer listed there hit SHIFT+COMMAND+C). Then simply drag your SD Card (in my case it shows as "untitled 1" after taking from my Fuji X100V) up to a spot in the Favorites. When I eject the SD card, and put it back in it does show up again in Favorites. This is a known bug with Big Sur, per Apple Support Forums. The SD will show on the desktop if you have the Finder's General Preferences to show "External Disks", so you could just jump to desktop from the finder sidebar and see it that way also. One extra step until Apple (or Fuji names the cards on format) steps up to fix this quirk.

The reason this happens is that, when Fuji formats a card, it doesn’t give the volume a name. Older versions of OSX mounted the volume automatically using the name “Untitled”. Apparently, this doesn’t happen with Big Sur. The Canon formatted card works because the camera names the volume “EOS_Digital” when it reformats it.

I’ve had this issue on and off with several Fuji cameras and macbooks. My guess is that it is mostly a Fuji issue. None of our other cameras here in the studio have this (Nikon, Sony, Canon, Leica, Hasselblad and Phase One). Next to that I’ve experienced card writing issues on several occassions with an X-H1 and a GFX50S. All perfect high quality SD cards approved by Fuji in their manuals. Nonetheless some very annoying lock-ups and lost images during location shoots. I now only use my beloved X-Pro2 (never an issue) for personal stuff.

I have used a lot if different Apple OS versions and my Fujifilm SD card always shows as “Untitled”. One tip: Always lock (make it read-only) the SD card before inserting it in the computer no matter the OS. Otherwise Windows and Apple will place hidden files on it which may effect your camera not using the SD card correctly. A feature request for Fujifilm would be to include a low-level format option, like Canon does. This formats all the bits and bytes on the SD card and will slightly increase writing speed. Lot’s of greetings, Dennis 🇳🇱

So I’m not alone (thank you). I have had the same problem, but thought it was my new card reader. I discovered. that If you open a location such as your “i mac 2017,” it should be visible, without having to go to disk utilities. And there you can eject it, too. That has been my experience. Did not try to rename though.

Yeah. I have the same behavior on Big Sur. I have the prefs set to give the desktop icon though. Sometimes I import using Apple’s Image Capture, too.

I have the same issue the last month (s). You will also see the card if you click on the Computer in the Finder. You can select or deselect that option in the Finder settings. But yes, I think Fuji, or Apple are going to fix this bug.

This started with the Bug Sur update. However you don't need to use Disk Utility, it should just appear on the desktop as a drive 'Untitled' and you can click to rename or just use it. I also get a similar issue on my GoPro Hero 8 where it appears in the sidebar but not on the Desktop (opposite issue) as GoPro doesn't rename the card correctly either! Loads of other complaints about this to Apple on the web. I've complained to Fuji and GoPro (they need to follow correct standards for formatting) and Apple (they need to fix the bug). Of course, no reply!

I had a similar SD card issue with my Dell XPS. It would not recognized the card. I had to download a new driver and then restart the computer with card in place. It has worked fine for a short while so far.

Are you running Big Sur? I have a five year old iMac running Catalina and I have no issues with cards from X-Pro 2, XT2 or X100F

Yep. It's Big Sur. I can't get back to Catalina unfortunately.

I noticed this problem with Sony TOUGH-M series SDXC UHS-II Card 128GB, V60, CL10, U3 cards from my X-T4. I use one of these in my X-Pro 2 also and it doesn't seem to have a problem. None of my SanDisk Extreme Pro cards have this problem (one of which is in the second slot on my X-Pro 2). I have a 2012 MacBook Air running Catalina (10.15.7) and sometimes the built-in card reader will work fine (though it takes a while for it to show up in finder) and sometimes it doesn't. This only started happening recently ... as in ... I didn't notice it until I was trying to read cards from my X-T4 which I just recently purchased. I haven't been using your workaround. Matter of fact I don't think I even checked in Disk Utility. Sometimes I just reboot with the card in the built-in reader and then it shows up after reboot. I really should've just checked Disk Utility. Sometimes, for me, taking the card out and putting it back in again fixed it. Sometimes, even though it loaded fine (albeit slow) in Finder, it'll give me the warning message that I ejected the card when I clearly hadn't. It then reloads the card. Sometimes the fix is just to plug the card into a USB-A reader and plug that in. But even then ... sometimes it doesn't show up. I was really beginning to think this was an issue with the specific cards being UHS-II or SDXC since the machine is from 2012. Clearly something is whack and needs to be addressed.

Hey man I have no problem with XT4 and MacOS BigSur on my 16inch MBP. Idk what it can be. It is fine also if I format the SD from the Fuji. Maybe is the SD Card? I have a Lexar 1667x 128gb

yep - I've been getting this. definitely a bug. not too much of an issue having to go through your Mac in locations on the sidebar but a pain nonetheless

Another way you can find it easily is to click on the computer icon under locations (yours is iMac 2017 or iMac 2020). It will be there

Exactly ! I was reading all the comments before posting the same solution ;). You're totally right: in the finder, click on your computer's name in "Locations" and voilà ! The "Untitled" card shows up. But, yes, this Big Sur issue should be sorted out by apple.
