In the past I've spent a lot of time adapting vintage lenses to my Fuji setup. Especially for telephoto because they aren't used in my lineup as often. I've had multiple 85mm Pentax lenses that I've sold off because it wasn't a focal length I particularly enjoyed. I'm more of a fast 35 - 55 shooter for portraits, so even my lovely little canon 85mm 1.8 gathers more dust than it should. I somehow managed to fall in love with the oddball Pentax M 120mm 2.8 lens. For the crop system, it gives me enough flexibility and is surprisingly sharp wide open. Not to mention it isn't even much larger than the XF 50mm f2. For someone that doesn't need AF and doesn't want to spend 900 bucks, that would be my recommendation.

Video? Wow, I never would have thought of that, thanks! I see this lens equates to 137mm 35mm equivalent. 135mm on my film ME Pentax was my favorite medium telephoto lens. I've got to get one of these!

90mm and 135m focal lengths are quite different in compression. The 137mm equivalent is only for what you can get in the frame. It does not give a 90mm lens the more compressed look of a 135mm lens. In reality it gives a look closer to an 85mm lens since it's 90mm and compared to full frame it's a 1.5 cropped 90mm so you don't get the full compression effect of a 90mm compared to full frame since you have to move farther away to get the same framing. Like if you have a 90mm on a full frame but you crop the photo 1.5x times it didn't transform into a 135mm lens but a cropped 90mm. Still 90mm compression is still enough and i prefer it to 135mm personally. Especially for portraits this 90mm is a real beast.

Yeah, it´s a great lens for sure. But I, just like you, struggle with the focal length a bit. When I need a longer reach I typically use the 50-140mm f2,8 because of its versatility + IS. I always struggled with this even when I used Canon- I had to force myself to use the Canon 135mm f2 instead of the 70-200mm f2,8 IS II. The difference in image quality was there but usually not enough to bother for me. With Fuji I would say the difference is a little bit bigger. The Fuji 50-140mm f2,8 has a rather limited separation from the bg. The 90mm f2 is much better for that + is´s noticably sharper, so I use it more often :)

Thanks for an informative and enjoyable review. I moved over from Nikon and am having a hard time with the idea of letting go of its 70-200mm. I'm weighing up whether I should go for Fuji's 50-140mm, f2.8, or, get this 90mm prime. I tested both lenses in store and, similarly, the look of shots with the 90mm just stopped me in my tracks. Have you shot the 50-140, f2.8 at 90mm, if so, how did that look to you in comparison? Thanks for your review, look forward to more.

For the time Fujinon released the lens, not having the OIS is kind of a let-down, considering only these days we get more IBIS bodies from Fujifilm. Otherwise, this might be the sharpest Fujinon lens on the market today!

I have the fujifilm X-T100 which is one of fuji’s more budget-friendly cameras. Im thinking about possibly getting this lens (second hand), but idk if my camera would be able to handle it... What is your opinion? Would it be a waste to get this lens for a budget camera (which I am planning to upgrade in the somewhat near future). I am really torn hah. Anyways, I loves the video and all the best!

Hi! Thanks so much for watching & for the comment! I think you would still get all of the benefits this lens provides as far as image quality goes. The only thing to consider might be the ergonomics. I've never used the X-T100, but I do find the 90 to be a bit large for my XPro3. It's definitely doable though. I hope this helps!

The X-T100 was my first Fuji camera I bought it when it was first released back in 2018? since It was a budget friendly camera and allowed me to step into the Fuji world without breaking my bank lol. It wasn’t until recent that I upgraded to X-T3. Now, I own a couple of lenses from Fuji that I used on the T100 prior to upgrading. Like the 16-80mm, 35mm F2, 10-24mm, 80mm Macro and 16mm 1.4. Most of the lenses were way too big for my tiny T100 but the images still turned out beautiful. But once you use the lenses on something like a X-T4, T3 or even a T-20-30. You’ll see a huge difference in the quality of images you can get. The auto focus on the X-100 is just unbearable to be honest, you won’t really be able to appreciate these lenses on the T100. But the image quality is still there..you just have to be extremely patient with the AF and how buggy the camera in general can feel. Hope this helps!

0:50 if you don't know adding image stabilization on a lens lowers image quality. It would be a horrible choice for a lens like this. Plus it's almost not a telephoto lens at 90mm. The view is equivalent to 135mm but it does not shake as easy as a 135mm lens since it's a 90mm with a crop factor compared to full frame. So it's not necessary and it would degrade image quality. And you can now pair it with an XT4 that has stabilization on the sensor.
@TheZachMendez

Adding IS doesn't lower image quality. Image quality depends on the quality of glass and coatings. IS is just a bunch of motors and magnets balancing the elements. How is a bunch of motors and magnets supposed to degrade the light quality?? IS is necessary on lenses past the 70mm (ff equivalent) as that's where IBIS starts to fall off. IBIS is only effective for normal zoom ranges (24-70 FF range), and after that lens IS is far more reliable.

@@epicon6 What? No wait. It's 2021, the tech to do so perfectly has been around for years. Do you really think engineers are incapable of something so simple? By that logic autofocus makes the image quality weak too. Quad linear motors bruh. Also, Sony and Canon lenses have dual/quad linear rails for their motors too. Stepping motors take up space too.
