Fujifilm really makes it hard for me to choose between these cameras. I'm a photographer mostly doing landscape and people. But want and need to do more video stuff. Both cameras would be sufficient for my needs but I personally tend to go for the XH2s as a hybrid. However, If I go for the XH2s, I can imagine at some point I would regret it and miss the resolution. If I go for the XH2, at some point I would regret it for not having 4k120FPS and for having ugly rolling shutter. Aaaah Fujifilm, what have you done to me. Hate to make decisions like this.

@Stefan Henning - I'm in the same predicament and the same decision factors. Have you made a choice? As suggested in the video, perhaps the Super Resolution feature might do the trick for upscaling a stills image. It would be harder to address the rolling shutter issue and the lack of 4K120 FPS. Could this tip the scales for the X-H2S? On the flip side, the X-H2 is less expensive and if it handles the rolling shutter better than the X-T4, then perhaps it tips back to the X-H2. 🙂 @Vistek - thanks for this post. Very informative.

Rolling shutter is fixable, and 4k120 is rarely used more than a few times :) 4k60 is well enough for most hobby videographers :)

Thanks for the insight. I don't think this is a niche camera, most people are interested in photos more than video, and if they don't focus on sports and wildlife, they'd chose the 40mp sensor over the X-H2s. Same for me, as a hybrid user, I do value the higher resolution over the stacked sensor, for the flexibility of reframing photos. But 8k video has very little value for me, and if photo cropping looks as bad as it looks with the 1080p cropping from 8k video, then maybe I should reconsider this.

I tend to agree with you. In all my real-world situations, 26 MP has always been enough for me on the X-T3. However more dynamic range, better autofocus, even greater video quality and IBIS are things that I wished for and this I all find in the X-H2S. I fell in love with the X-T3 for it's great retro style and handling especially, but the X-H2S has won me over especially in the video quality itself and the ergonomic grip. The X-H2S feels like a very substantial, delivering camera, that cuts the right corners for those who are 50/50 on video and photography, or maybe even more into videography.

In the future, can you look at the XH2 vs the GFX 50S II (for photography). I rarely shoot video. So, the video features are tempting but not required. But, image quality, highlight roll off and overall richness of the image speak to me.

Thanks! I am primarily a video guy, but at 24 MP of Full Frame (Lumix S1) or 26 MP (Fuji XT3) I find nothing lacking in terms of resolution. If I really had to print a 100 feet tall hoarding, I would rent the GFX100S and take those ultra resolution photos. The 45 MP middle ground for a price premium makes little sense for my use case. Between XH2 and XH2S, absolutely the X-H2. However, I'm still waiting for a significant reason why to go from the X-T3 to the X-H2S. Maybe a 1699 USD X-T5 might be the answer, down the line

If I want more megapixels, I use Gigapixel AI. It is fantastic. Doing "street photography" I need the buffer to be larger and clear faster. Here the X-H2s is going to be the clear winner.

Hi. I love your practical minded reviews. Have you discovered any difference between the X-H2 and X-H2s in dynamic range or better low light performance? I am waiting for my X-H2 to arrive but am wondering if the X-H2s may be better. I am about 60% photo and 40% video and don't mind the price difference. The extra resolution sounds great but in truth I don't think it matters much as I've never printed anything larger than 13x19 and probably never will. Thanks!

Uh I got so nervous thank you for reassuring me with this video. I was about to return my XH2s I just purchased when I saw the announcement today of the XH2. But when you mentioned the stacked sensor I felt a little more at ease and now am confident about my purchase. I would say the only reason I see people really going to the XH2 regardless is the cheaper price/price difference. Cause on paper the XH2 is a couple hundred dollars cheaper and you get 40 megapixels and 8K video. So even though there may be advantages to the stacked sensor for the S, people are gonna see more pixels and resolution and jump the boat on it regardless. Even though technically the S has more advantages like frame rates and rolling shutter. For me I personally don’t care, I would’ve only gotten the XH2 cause it seemed cheaper with more things to it, but 40 megapixels is so unnecessary, if I’ve made 62 inch prints with my XT-3, I think I am fine with the XH2s.

I thought it was unnecessary also to have a higher mp camera but after now owning the gfx100s it's hard to go back. You just get so much more freedom with cropping, editing, low light performance. It's incredible but I understand not everyone has the same needs or requirements

Even though I knew XH2 would be announced today, I still ordered XH2s today. I chose the XH2s because of its ability to shoot 6k full read-out at 3X2. It's now possible for me to upload videos to Instagram without having to worry about cropping them. Plus 14 stops of dynamic range and a controlled rolling shutter. So for video, xh2s has an edge that's why it costs more. However, XH2 was very tempting. I will probably buy XH2 to go with Xh2s.

I agree, in most instances, you don't need 40mp, I own a 5Dsr and a couple of 7dM2 as well as a 5DMk3, for landscapes the 5Dsr was great for re-framing in post, the rest of the time any of the cameras where great, however and its a big, however, one of the most attractive reasons to go for the XH2 is the cost-saving over the XH2s, especially if your jumping eco systems, its the cost of a great lens to go with your new camera

I was expecting th Xh2 launch to take a decission. To me Xh2s is the way to go. Enough resolution, less rolling shutter, better autofocus, better dynamic range, better slow motion and something very underrated but very imoortant: smaller photo file sizes. A bigger resolution means a much bigger file size and the most of the times I am not going to need it. 26Mp is more than enough if you do the right frame at shooting. Indeed it lets you a lot of reframing of your final image is going to be in Instagram or social. No doubt xh2s gives more pros than xh2, being both a very impressive cameras.

They are different sensors, so it's entirely possible that the colours could be different. I didn't test that. The photos look a bit different because I think they may have been on different film emulation profiles, but I can't say for 100% certain. These are the kind of things you miss when you only have a day or two to run the camera through a barrage of tests.

Ok so I'm of the group of not being a pixel peeper. I'm not a high resolution snob. I don't need the 8k, 6k, 4k. I have no problem shooting full hd because I don't "need" it. There is a time and place for it, i agree. I don't think every project needs the "k" resolution. Grain doesn't bother me. I embrace it. I love the character. Now saying that, does the full HD really make you take a step back and pause as you do in the video? Going back, you did down scale from 8k. Recognizing that, how would that compare to filming straight FHD?

Confused between the XH2S and the XH2? The XH2S has better / stellar rolling shutter performance, higher dynamic range, better autofocus, open gate recording, raw recording formats, more recording formats etc. So I’m slightly confused about your confusion (unless I have misunderstood you) If it’s between XH2S and Sony A74, I would say that the XH2S would be better overall tool for film making. If it’s between the XH2S and the Sony A7S3 or FX3, then either would be good but Fuji would be much cheaper and maybe a bit easier to work with in terms of colour. If it is between the XH2S and the BMPCC 4/6 K, then it will depend on how much you care about autofocus. If you care about autofocus, then the XH2S is definitely the one to get. If not and you can live with the large ugly looking body, then then the BMPCC is a better / truer cinema camera. Interestingly, I feel like Fuji made the XH2S to be like a B cam to the BMPCC, as I feel like they pair well with together.
