In Southern California, Joshua Tree National Park features primarily short (less than 200 feet) rock climbing routes suitable for all experience levels. The rock is quartz monzonite. And being a desert climate has bestowed the park wintertime appeal.
Across from Hidden Valley Campground is the formation Cyclops (commonly "Cyclops Rock"). A wide, prominent alcove-chimney shoots up middle, to end with a hole. Aptly titled the "Eye" and goes at 5.3 (5.2-5.4 accounting for heights), it is the most popular low-fifth class in Joshua Tree.
The brief approach could be done in minutes. Eventually, climbers exit by passing through the "eye" and walking off the backside. Although simple technically, note that the horizontal traverse near midpoint involves great exposure which may distress free soloists.

My Thoughts:
Per researching online betas, I expected, encountered greasy spots and a stiff 5.3. The midway point exposure-albeit over in only 3-5 lateral moves and supported by huge jugs-was not a spot I could fuck up or freeze. Otherwise, I judged the tight spacing and reachy holds right before gaining the "eye" to be most technical.
Going through the hole to finish was a nice bonus, as were the views. I believed it would be possible to descend and return around Cyclops on the right/south, as well, but never explored that option. I did run into one group, which climbed (roped) the route between my first and second passes.
