This reminds me of when I first started seeing articles/videos about playing Windows games (I think the first game I saw was KOTOR II) on Linux a decade+ ago. I was pretty skeptical and pessimistic and things turned out much better than I thought. It will be interesting to see where gaming on FreeBSD will go. Thanks for the video.

I have 303 games in steam and about 240 work in FreeBSD with Mizuma. The gaming performance seems to surpass Linux as well. DX12 should be available soon as well so more games will be compatible soon. Still no rockstar titles though. Kind of a bummer. Great video!

@simonsomething2620 NobaraOS 36 and Fedora 36 would be my latest systems as a reference. I don't currently use that system anymore so currently I don't know how they match up. I did recently install a NobaraOS system for a cousin and compared Xorg and Wayland on both systems on the same hardware using glmark2 just out of curiosity and freebsd did outperform NobaraOS at that time in that benchmark on both wayland and Xorg. It's a synthetic test of course but I still find it interesting.

@simonsomething2620When Apple was building OS X they gave a lot back to the BSDs. I’m pretty sure Sony does the same. BeOS was based on BSD, as was SunOS. The BSDs have a long history of kernel development and optimization for graphics and audio. I’m not surprised that FreeBSD can be made to perform very well. Plus there are several other BSDs, all focusing on different aspects of the kernel. If I decide to move away from my mainstream OS, I’ll definitely start with FreeBSD for everyday tasks.

WINE9 was finally fixed!!! They also got rid of that annoying bit where it would report wrong OS when trying to install the 32bit mesa dri. Here's what I discovered: - Kingdom Hearts Melody of Memory plays correctly (requires a keyboard to usb control mapper). - RPG Maker 2003 and MZ are both working and the games also play. - Steam (through WINE) broke, reports SteamUI dll cannot load. - Steam (Linuxulator) still works. *Rec Room and Dead by Daylight would not load back on Proton 7, skipped Proton 8 due to that mesa dri wrong os nonsense, but with Proton 9 the games actually load up and get past that easy Anti-Cheat splash. They still won't connect due to some remaining issues. - Adobe Animate (versions 2019 - 2023) actually launch! Creating a new document doesn't work, but opening an exiting one does for a second. I saw my website/assets on screen, but the program crashes a moment after. We're sooooooo close, thing's are finally coming together. Still, I may have to VM for specific things like MC Bedrock and Adobe Illustrator with plotter (graphtec).

Linux is like this too, but in the last 10 years more and more distros have started bundling non-free software/firmware/drivers. BSD folks seem to be more hesitant to do that kind of thing from what I can tell.

Not true. Apple shared a lot of the work they did on macOS with the BSD foundation. Parts of macOS are still open source. It’s more similar to some Linux distros than you might think. Besides, I thought part of the fun of being a Linux user was in the effort of building a customizing your own system. I see more and more Linux users moving to one of the BSDs for the same reason they moved to Linux in the first place.

I will never fully understand why the freebsd environment is not capable of developing its own things without waiting for them to appear out of inertia. Only now can you play decently on freebsd, but nowhere near better than on Linux, only thanks to copying what is done on Linux for many years. It's always the same, they will say what they want about their file system, wiki (which arch and gentoo far surpass), etc; In Linux it is always done sooner with more variants and better. Aai, I will never understand those airs of elitism of the BSD environment in general when they depend on Linux for everything; Be careful, I don't consider bsds to be garbage, it's just that they are better in some areas than Linux, but Linux is much better in the vast majority of cases
