This is by far THE most complete, detailed, and comprehensive version of the 1970 NFC Championship game that you will ever see/hear. It took me about two weeks to put this all together. I've taken the CBS-TV broadcast of the 1970 NFC Championship game and replaced the audio with two different radio broadcasts of the game which I've synched up to the action throughout. A few years back I was given the entire radio broadcast of the game by Bill Fox, who recorded the KSFO-560 49er radio broadcast with Lon Simmons and Hugh McElhenny that day in 1971. Twice during the radio recording he switched the station to KCBS-74 which was broadcasting the CBS radio version of the game with Ray Geracy and Bob Reynolds. The CBS radio broadcast makes up 41 minutes total of the entire game broadcast. Having two different radio broadcasts occur during different times in the game adds a nice contrast to the overall experience. Thanks very much Bill! In addition to the different audio, I've also incorporated ALL NFL Films footage of the game that I have as either replays or during actual live-action. This too adds an entirely new layer to the game, as the original broadcast doesn't contain many replays, nor does it capture great zooms and angles like NFL Films did that day. I've added a constant on-screen down/distance/quarter/score graphic in the lower-left. Last, but not least, I have removed ALL TV commercials from the broadcast, as well as ALL on-screen CBS graphics such as score, TV program advertisements, etc. I wanted all footage to be completely raw and unencumbered by ads. Unfortunately the TV recording ends with 1:45 remaining in the 4th quarter. There are 5 total plays at the end which I did not have footage for, and so I utilized some creative editing to showcase these. The radio calls are of course present for these missing plays. Unfortunately also, there is major tape damage present during the last part of the 4th quarter TV recording. Still, it is amazing that we have almost the entire game, most of it in very nice quality considering it is 51 years old. The majority of the first half especially is stupendous quality.

I watched this game live back almost 53 years ago. You tend to forget the things that could have changed the game. A dropped pass, an interception that did not happen. A short field goal missed. $12 for a ticket. Those were the days my friend, we thought they would never end. Thanks for posting this fine game. I miss those games where there weren't 100 passes between both teams.

I was at this game and I was 6 years old. My family had just moved from the East Coast and we had tickets at about the 35 yd line halfway up. I am amazed that I know almost every name on the 49ers and We lived in the same apartment complex as Ken Willard and his family. I don't think I've ever gotten over this game. How do you get over something like this if you're 6 years old? However, I don't think we need to talk about how great players were from one era to the next. These guys were from a different era and the American diet was unquestioned obviously. Brody however could maybe get a job. He throws such a nice pass. Gene Washington wasn't bad either.

@@davevolskysbackdoor5673 Why did none of the networks archive these games?
@davevolskysbackdoor5673
Жыл бұрын
Videotape was in its infancy in the late 60's and SUPER expensive (I've heard $20,000 per tape). The networks didn't have many actual tapes to play with, so they would record over games, shows, etc. With the cost of the tapes being sky high, not having many to work with because of the exorbitant cost, and that they figured there was no use keeping these games because from their perspective because they'd never get aired again, you can understand why they weren't kept. It's a tragedy for sure, but understandable. Its amazing that we have ANY broadcast games from that period to be honest. It isn't just sports games from back then that are rare to survive. There's tons of material from news broadcasts to one-off shows, etc that suffered a similar fate. Anything not shot on film was subject to it.

Can someone tell me how Craig Morton was a starting QB for at least three teams I am aware of. He is horrible. My only "Live" memory of him is his dismantling by his old team the Cowboys when he was on the Broncos in the Super Bowl. Every highlight and old games he is really bad. Looks the part but just no good.
@davevolskysbackdoor5673
2 жыл бұрын
I think Morton gets a bad rap in hindsight. In actuality he was a pretty consistent quarterback throughout his career. Nobody plays 18 seasons in the NFL if they are horrible. The year in question here, 1970, Morton had an 89.8 passing rating for the season, which was third-best in the entire NFL behind Brodie (93.8) and Jurgensen (91.5). He threw just 7 interceptions and led the league in yards/attempt. For his career he had a 73.5 QB rating, which is higher than the careers of such notables as John Brodie, Daryle Lamonica, Terry Bradshaw, Joe Namath, Jim Hart, Jim Plunkett, Joe Ferguson, and even Sammy Baugh. I think part of it has to do with the earlier years that he played, when the passing game wasn't nearly as prevalent and less-than-stellar stats were the norm. For instance, it still floors me that Unitas in the 1970 AFC Championship game was just 11 of 30. Passing ratings over 100 for a season were pretty unusual back then. Granted he wasn't a superstar or anything, and if we were drafting teams he wouldn't be my first or even second choice at QB, but he was definitely above average, and I believe he was the first starting QB to lead two different teams to the Super Bowl. You could certainly do a lot worse than having him as your starting QB.
@bgarri57

As a kid I much preferred Staubach, but to be fair to Morton, I don't think he as playing at 100 percent health wise.
