I did this with fully loaded saddlebag in 1956. After climbing wrynose. Hard work but what a memory. It was hot too!

And don't forget that your bike had nowhere the range of gears the modern ones have and weighed probably a good 5 kg more, being a steel frame set. Notice how they all have carbon fibre frame sets, yet so many end up giving up and walking.

Amazing ride. Well done for keeping up the pace. Not sure I could have done that power output and as other viewers have written, well done getting round some of those who didn’t keep a straight line. Still, when you’re knackered, it’s hard not to weave all over the place. Must have felt incredible when you went over the top. Great stuff!!!

in all the years i cycled and extensively toured, hardknott is the only climb to beat me, but then again it was a tad icy in the winter of the late 70's, and i was 15 i think with saddlebag & gearing much higher than they use now, but excuses aside im not sure i would have made it round the 1:3 hairpins anyway, even though i did many other hills just as steep if not as long. The camera doesnt do the climb justice, but from what i remember it was a beast alright, and big up for the speed and effort you put in, in fact a great effort from all who completed the Fred.

Thanks for the vid, I watched it in double time. Great effort. I'm dreading this next week. Plus the walkers need to keep out the way! They're all over the place. I currently run 50mm carbon wheels on my TCR, should I swap out for Aluminium braking surface for the descents or will they be fine? Worried about overheating with all the constant braking.
@colw6916
5 жыл бұрын
How heavy are you? I'm 90Kg - I would definitely go for alloy rims myself, a couple of the descents (like Hardnott) are extremely steep and twisty and require near constant braking, with no real option for cadence braking (or you'll quickly be at 30mph and off the road!). I had disc brakes, and these ended up working OK, although the pads were glazed and noisy at the end! It's a fantastic event though! Good luck and hope you get a nice day for it!
@jamesfowler4964

they get bloody hot, but should be ok. I've had my break block start melting on me down hardnot and spitting melted bits at my legs but the carbon rims were not too bad. Saying that tho you should be fine with carbon rims, if your breaks start to fade you can always dowse them with water. hahaha

Heavy, yet very fit riders are slow on the climbs so never win mountain stages, but they do have an advantage of being able to use their body weight when out of the saddle to push more force on the crank arms. So their watts look impressive, but not necessarily due to pure strenght.

there needs to be more accurate grade % measures. Obviously it should not be 0% when people are walking up. It's not your fault, I see it on many other cycling videos. The tech is not yet good enough to determine %. Maybe I should fix that, I've got a physics and math degree. It's gotten pretty annoying now the shitty grade predictions from our current tech.
