When I went through Navy basic, the issue of sideburns came up. In a rare nice moment, our Company Commanders really had no objections to them, but, in all honesty, they prefered that you didn't grow them while in basic. I also know a guy that went through Air Force basic. He said that the Training Instructor (TI) didn't want to see any hair on the recruits faces, PERIOD! So they shaved off their eyebrows. When the TI saw that he freaked. Sir, you said no facial hair, PERIOD!, Sir. Needless to say, HE was scared. Oh, shit, I hope that the Colonel doesn't come around. What would he say, I wonder? SGT! When you imagine the fact that most of the guys in Vietnam were being forced to be there, the looks of despondent sadness on their face take on a whole new meaning. I think one aspect of the film gets really overlooked: the fact that all the recruits were drafted. It's such an underlying theme to the entire movie, but it's never mentioned once. That's the whole point to this scene, and that's why everyone looks dazed. That's also the reason why Private Pyle was admitted to boot camp in the first place. During the draft, physical requirements for the military were lowered significantly.

How do you know all the recruits were drafted? During the draft, I tried to enlist to get it over with and and MOS of my choosing. Got rejected for a medical reason, A few years later I got drafted, brought the medical records and they said, "That isn't so bad." and I was in. After we took the oath, we were lined up and a Marine sergeant came in asking for volunteers. No one did. He said, "OK, I'll pick volunteers. You, you, you..." He volunteered every other man. But I understand Marine Corps usually has volunteers.
@NoQuestions4sked
7 жыл бұрын
Man, do you folks learn anything in schools these days besides bunkum and bullshit? These are Marines. During the Vietnam War, the Marines prided themselves on being an all-volunteer force. However, from '66 onwards the Marines began to selectively draft small batches without lowering their physical or mental standards. The chance that any of these Marines portrayed in the story are draftees is extremely slim, especially considering the only time a large-scale draft operation was undergone by the Marine Corps was after the battle of Khe Sahn. Khe Sahn, as you should know, began in January of '68. In the film, when Joker meets up with the Lusthogs, the Battle of Hue is being fought which began around roughly the same time as Khe Sahn and lasted until March of '68. Recruit training and SOI is a total of five months. They are volunteers.

Film vs reality...I went thru boot at Parris Island in '74...our "barber shop" experience was somewhat different for our first haircut: We were marched in single file thru two doors into a 10 by 10 bare concrete room with one bare light bulb dangling from the ceiling above with a large metal trash can in the middle...two barbers stood there with clippers as the DI's yelled..."Bend over the trash can, If you have a mole on your head put your GD finger on it or it'll get shaved off"...we were roughly shorn and then rushed out....welcome to one minor episode in the hell hole known as Receiving back in the day. We did go to the base barber shop thereafter though.

At Ft Jackson holding company before starting training, we were marched into barber shop, a bunch of chairs and guy cutting my hair had me facing the mirror to say good bye to my long hair. I was so used to my long hair I hardly recognized myself and thought, "Damn, I look just like a baby bird." and that thought made me laugh. The sergeant came over and started yelling at me, "I will tell you when to laugh..." and him yelling at me made it worse and I laughed louder. Bad move. He yanked me out of the chair and really got in my face and I stopped laughing. Things got worse...I was sent to Fort Puke Louisiana in July for Basic Training. Our top sergeant was like in the movie, and said funny things about who messed up the day before when we were information but our day to day drill instructor was quiet and had a 5,000 yard stare. If you messed up, he didn't yell, he stared or took action. I would have preferred a thousand yard stare or shouting over that. After training, I tried talking to him to find out what his story was. He just stared and creeped me out. Jeez, sorry for running out of the mouth. Amazing the memories that can flood out from a short clip from a movie

Actually, those clippers weren't even designed for barbers, but for shearing sheep. I'm not joking. What a brilliant way to open the movie. I well remember the buzz cut I received at Great Lakes over 25 years ago; and even fully prepared for how I would look well beforehand, I still recall just what a gut punch it was seeing myself in that full length mirror just outside the barber shop, standing in ranks with all the other guys who had just gotten the exact same treatment. Surprising how hard such a small thing can really hammer you, let me tell you.
