Step aboard a unique view of The Talyllyn Railway, running from Tywyn to Nant Gwernol in Southern Snowdonia. Steam Locomotive 'Tom Rolt' was constructed by the Talyllyn Railway, and completed in 1991, using parts from an Andrew Barclay locomotive built in 1949 for Bord na Móna.
The Talyllyn Railway is the Worlds First Preserved Railway rescued by volunteers in 1951.
Many viewers may recognise key features of our journey as the Talyllyn was the basis for the 'Skarloey Railway' in the Rev W Awdrys Railway Series stories, the basis for the Thomas & Friends TV Series.
Our Journey today begins at Tywyn Wharf Station as 'Tom Rolt' steams through the steep inclines past the Engine Sheds at Tywyn Pendre and into the mountains. The views of the Fathew Valley open up in front of us as 'Tom Rolt' steams over the stunning Dolgoch Viaduct, with the Waterfalls of Dolgoch rumbling beneath the viaduct.
After a brief stop for water, our journey continues through stunning scenery to Abergynolwyn. Up until 1976, this was the end of the line for Passenger Trains. The Railway was extended over the former 'freight only' extension to the Quarries of Bryneglwys, which was the reason for the Talyllyn Railways existence - to carry slate from the Welsh Mountains to be transhipped around the world.
We steam on through stunning scenery as spectacular views continue around every corner arriving above the uniquely placed Nant Gwernol Station, high above the ravines of Nant Gwernol below.
