At 29:00 With that view and that sound of the thunder.... That is all i could ever ask for in this world! Just to be there in nature, on some bar that hadn't seen humans in many years , digging away without a care in the world as the thunder plays it's symphony and i can watch the birds flying and the rain coming down further down the canyon..... There is nothing better.

My favorite thing about your show is that you work hard to keep track of the statistical information so you can break it down later.
@UtmostOutdoors
Жыл бұрын
Thanks Uncle Jimmy! Yeah I find if I don't keep track of things it's hard to have any set data point to compare to or improve off of. If I know the slope and flow that can keep up with my shoveling, then it's easy to give that exact setting to other to use who have a similar miners moss. Also, way nice once you know it's dialed in to just be able to shovel and not worry about the box because you know it's doing it's job :)

Chris is right, according to pop and son you need to see the tops of the expanded before feeding. This is where the size of the shovel and the length of the box...or umm...scour filled length plus some recovery on the end, to put it in layman terms.. accomadate feed rate. Your top hopper does help delay the scour...or is that even it out or prolong it? What I think i'm getting at is there needs to be a way to "gate the feed" so it can not build scour.I know your designing for that, and well done. This is now top of my build plans. Don't get me wrong, it won't be a high production shovel into highbanker...more of a feed system like your cleanup sluice...on steroids. thanks for sharing another installment of Kyle and Chris's 5 day gold adventure!! cheers Kelly ps what are your thoughts so far on the widening alluivial sluice?
@UtmostOutdoors
Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I think the top hopper with moss extends the amount of time that it takes for the bottom box to clear, as it hold into material and bleeds it down into the lower box. If you inspect it closer which is hard to see on camera, there is a period of time after it clears the mud where you can see little sand bars of black sand working down the box and those clear even a few seconds later. I assume the black sand bars take a few seconds to form after you put a shovel in as they are initially caught in the top hopper, so simply using the clearing of muddy water as a feed rate indicator is probably pretty accurate. In a future test after increasing the water flow from about 31GPM to about 40GPM the box still retained it's fine gold retention, but cleared more quickly and thus allowed it to keep up to a higher feed rate and recovery was improved. I wanted to show this imperfect result test to show the learning journey along the way and I always try to show honest results people can use when designing their own equipment rather than just try to show off a particular mat as if it's the "best" way or something. My thoughts on the sluice that widens as it goes are that it really distributes the water nicely. It as least looks good. I feel if the sluice was entirely 12" wide, it would not hurt recovery, but would add a bit of weight and bulk. My dislike is that it is harder to manufacture the hinge point between the hopper and the sluice as the hopper is squared off and the sluice is flared. I think straight or flared would both work nicely, but in my mind I believe that the varied flow rate as the water travels down the sluice is having some positive effect. I do not KNOW this to be true, but I BELIEVE it to be true... So take that with a grain of salt.

Would your gallons be per minute ? Oops? Every thing is looking good . Just have to shovel no helping the sluice to do its job . just using gravity and water to make it work . If everything is adjustable one can dial it in for the ground you're working . Great Video and sluice

Thanks for the kind words! I don't think any other quality manufacturers would think of the competition as a threat... I think Keene Engineering for example just focuses on continuing to build their equipment and try to make it better, rather than worry about what everyone else is doing. I'm trying to dial this in and work out a production model for sale when it's good and ready, so we'll see how many people are interested in what I come up with...

Not sure if it might help someone else working on building a highbanker, but...after MUCH MUCH touring around many different stores, lucked out & found a floor mat 3' x 4' at princess auto 🚘 actually made out of miners moss. Its even written on the labeling, sluice box matting. Same material being used in this operation here. Finding this is the most difficult thing I've encountered so far, great results showing up there!

@@UtmostOutdoors highbanker currently under construction, I've decided that instead of a small trough like "nugget catcher" I'm going too: make the crash box 📦 1 foot wide & 1 foot long, 5 inches deep! Then, do what I'm calling "the stack matt" out of rubber anti-fatigue matt( it is about 3/4" deep, and has about 3/4" holes evenly spaced throughout, also at princess auto, put it 4 layers thick. So...anything for heavies must mill around that top 1" area before spilling over & going down the sluice. Lots of water 💧, suspended material, and me throwing shovel fulls of dirt into the hopper to provide some agitation, and presto same action as a gold pan, built right into the crash box! I'll need a rubber spatula & a turkey baster to do my clean out, the 1 foot sections of stack matt should even fit into a gold pan for clean out too, its coming along 😉

I'm not sure yet... I'll have to try my best to improve the design even further while streamlining the production process. I want it to be as easy to manufacture as possible for my small garage shop setup so that I offer it at a price people can afford while not working for minimum wage to do so... hopefully, I can strike the right balance and put out a product I can be proud of.

Yeah, Later on if I can figure out how the heck to run a business and all that jazz... Even if I just do a limited run I'd like to make some available this fall.
