After 5 years of no rail service, L-Taraval light rail has returned to serve between the Sunset and downtown areas. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held by the City and County of San Francisco and SFMTA on Thursday, September 26th to commemorate the reopening. This project was on time and on budget, with restoration of rail service returning as promised. Upgrades were necessary, but it was worth the wait. Join me on this ride of the first day of light rail service on the L-Taraval as we go from SF Zoo, to Embarcadero Station, and back to see how the route has changed with all of the upgrades in place.
About the L-Taraval:
The L-Taraval is one of 8 rail lines owned and operated by the San Francisco Municipal Railway. L-Taraval rail service runs daily between the Embarcadero and SF Zoo, starting from 5am on weekdays and 8am on weekends until 12 midnight daily before being replaced by the L-Owl shuttle. The frequency for the L-Taraval is every 10 minutes on weekdays (12 minutes on evenings and 20 minutes on late nights) and every 12 minutes on weekends (15 minutes on evenings and 20 minutes on late nights). A total of 27 stops are designated along the route between SF Zoo and Embarcadero Station. The line currently uses Breda LRV2/LRV3 and Siemens LRV4 trains running on standard gauge tracks with a 600 V DC overhead power line.
History of the L-Taraval:
Service of the L-Taraval started on April 12th, 1919, after the dissolution of the United Railroads. It went from Taraval and 33rd Avenue all the way to the Ferry Building. This was then extended to run between Ocean Beach and the Ferry Building in downtown San Francisco on January 14th, 1923. The L-Taraval was modified to its present-day route on September 15th, 1937. Much of the L-Taraval line is built over United Railroads trackage, as seen between 46th Avenue and 48th Avenue on Taraval. Because of its route through the Twin Peaks tunnel, it was one of 6 streetcar lines to not be converted or replaced by buses in 1950. Light rail service would be implemented going forward as a result of the opening of the Muni Metro in 1980. The L-Taraval would be substituted by buses in 2019 for the L-Taraval improvement project and resumed light rail service on September 28th, 2024.
