9:25 i have a sony a6500 and when i first got it, i went filming without the face detection autofocus and was pretty disappointed with the focus hunting. It was SUPER BAD and i was confused, because when doing my research i saw people saying it was amazing. Then after tweaking the settings and using the face detection + zone/wide i noticed its a game changer, even when there's no face to detect (idk why), the autofocus gets REALLY great, extremely reliable and fast. Rarely have focus hunting now. Probably you had something similar since you said you didn't use the face detection autofocus to use it like you do with Canon, but i thought it would be good to share this, since it's a thing that happens and nobody told me about when i got the a6500.

So he didn't use Face Detect in the review... but then you assert how much better the "Canon" AF is than the Sony (though the Face Detect feature also meters the light of the skin tone off of the face that is detected which is a superb feature).

Look it up on the internet and there’s also a forum to ask.

I hope a Sony representative reads this comment. Come out with an option to have Sony engineers transform the A7III's screen to the flip out screen for a small fee. When I buy this camera, I will probably attempt to do it on mine. This camera is literally perfect in size, options, menu functionality, lens options, image quality, performance, features and ESPECIALLY the price, minus the AI Servo in video and the screen adjustment ability. When I bought the 6D MKII, I was excited for my first full frame. A week later, I saw the features for this camera and almost got a refund just to buy the body. Great vid, Matt!

About what you said around 6:40 - using dial to shoot slowmo. If you use the S&Q it is only 60mbit. If you shoot it in the normal 120p 100mbit it is much better. About compression artefacts - you can go around it ;) but you have to modify your profiles. Simply setting your saturation to higher value will improve the color problems after grading A LOT! Other modifications can improve SOOC material and the compression problems will be almost gone. The only downside - if you are using LUTs made for SLOG - they will not work properly. About the AF yes it can be bad at times but it is like everything else with Sony - you have to get used to it and find the right settings that work for you. After that it works very good. It even has the lock-on function via touch screen like the Canon but it is kinda hidden and you have to activate it... Nothing in Sony cameras work perfect from the beggining, you have to take your time and learn how to make it work. After that it is surprisingly good at many things.

Great review Matti! As far as the autofocus, I never tried the a7 iii, but the a7r iii doesn't do the hunting at all. Didn't see it in over 100 videos shot with it so far. I'm able to use the ronin, pass in front of an object and it keeps the focus on what I want or even better if you use the touch focus it works really well to respect the focus point. Another side note, no issue editing 4k in Final Cut on any computer I have, and export is as quick as in 1080p almost. I would say 0.45sec/min of footage in export time. If that helps people who have a crazy workflow. I also really like the colour that comes out right out of the camera, especially with the creative style "Light". Another quick note, if the face autofocus is on, it's pretty damn good and never failed me so far. I decided to get the a7r iii because it's overall a more complete camera, but for sure if budget is tight I do think the a7 iii would be a really good choice. I would never go back to Canon ever, even after using the 1DX ii because the footage is not as sharp I feel, the files are gigantic, the images are pretty much like the 5d iv and the only thing appealing is the fast burst for me as I do a lot of sports shot. 10fps is way enough for what I do and I think for what 98% of people shoot. That's my food for thought! Have a great day brother and keep up the good work

Dude, you should be using the face detection. Not sure why you’d want to handicap the Sony - it’s a feature it has so why not use it regardless of if canon has this or not. You’d have quite a different experience of the auto focus, but sounds like you are aware of that. I’ve heard people say the canon dual pixel auto focus in video is better but my experience of it is different. I used an 80d and found it inferior to my a6500. But then it has a flip out screen so that’s a big benefit, come on Sony - flip out screen please....

This is why you're one of my favourite KZitem filmmakers Matti, these are the types of reviews that actually help people out! Not bashing one brand or the other, but taking each one for what they're worth and being honest about them! Also, there might be some workaround for the issues you had with SLOG and 120p performance. There's people out there creating custom camera profiles based on the Cine gammas that offer you virtually the same dynamic range as SLOG2, better colours, but without the insane noise gain that SLOG2 is notorious for!

I'm getting this! But i think asking for flip out lcd screens for every camera is unfair, this is obviously a camera geared towards filmmakers not vloggers, though you can use it as a vlogging camera, sony is more focused on the pro film industry unlike canon who's gearing their efforts towards the digital vlogging community.

Nice video Matti...I think it's my next camera.. I JUst bought the Pentax K1Mark2,which also has a Sony sensor, and is probably neck and neck at low light,at around 819k,although i havent needed to go even halfway there.I shot with a Sony A580 for 4 years, and it was also a beast at low light, and one of the main reasons I left that system is because for whatever reason, all of the cameras, even the A77 and A99,had less battery life.I didnt comprehend from going from close to 1000 shots to less than 600 made any sense. That's really got to be pain in the butt having to stop, turn off the camera, put a new one in,and get started again. Then I have wide hands and thick fingers,so when i picked up the A7iii,i knew i would need a battery grip,so that pretty much killed the point of a lighter body.I happen to be grown man and athlete,so i am used to carrying things around, hiking, and transporting gear by hand,so I would never be whining about carrying around several pounds, even if it's all day. Now let's get to the real guts of the camera world.People who are serious and well balanced people dont whine and cry about the price, weight, brand ,and other petty stuff, instead focusing on composing and creating great images out of camera.Photography is so wide open and amazing now, that if you cannot decide on one and make great art, then it's NOT FOR YOU.The FACT is,you can do weddings, landscape, and wildlife with something like the Canon Ti6 or or even a Sony a68,with kit lenses.People need to stop being petty, crazy, and lying about brands, especially since a LOT of cameras use and have been using SONY sensors, for a LONG time.Point being,I would DARE anyone to come out with some lie, making statements which are OPINION,and trying to pass them off as fact.I say that because it takes money, courage, time, and effort to make these videos and do it well,so to have some idiot ounce on someone because they choose to use something else,is simply cowardly. People can and will nitpick but the fact is,people are making money and have produced some of the greatest art with inexpensive, older, rare, and simple tools. There was a time DSLRs had NO video, and I know because i shot with one,the Olympus 510.We all think we NEED things, yet most of us just WANT them.I would LOVE a Cayenne, yet I do not NEED one, because they ALL go from here to there. It's about the shooter, the artisan, the determination, and some knowledge.Once you learn the rules, you bend them, break them, and learn some more.I have a shot i use for a screensaver,i shot with that Sony, and people swore I was lying, and it was some $3000 camera doing time lapse. The thing is,I found the right spot, did a test shot with a low shutter speed, chose the right ISO,shot on AP,and pressed the button. You have to take the time and shoot, recall, make adjustments, and keep learning, and if you're busy crying about brands, you are missing the point. I am coming back Sony, especially since i can get a Metabones adaptor and use some of that Canon glass.I have friends who shoot Canon and I have some Canon film cameras....
@TamanduaGirl

You should have tried the face detect, you wouldn't have had that problem. It's great for that. Now at the same time I kind of agree because if your filming something other than people, it hunting can be a pain. So that could still stand to be tweaked a bit. Filming people though they have that covered if you use the tools it came with. Also, probably not an issue but possible, if the sensor gets dirt it will start hunting and missing focus a lot more.

Thank you Matti! You are the first person "in the world" mentioning, that the bitrate is stretched on more frames, which takes a lot of magic out of the fact 1080p 120p. Because smartphones can do this with reduced bitrate too. And f.e. Canon 5D4 could do this too easily I think. They just didn't want to loose the quality. But technical limitation is the bitrate, which hasn't progress in this camera if you ask me. Canon could leave the decision to us to choose between high fps and high bitrate though.

Nice review but I have to disagree with you with not using the Eye/Face detect AF. You just said that companies should provide a flip-out screen for their cameras given this age of self filmmaking/vlogging. Therefore, having Eye/Face detect AF is big advantage for these kind of videos and shouldn't be neglected simply because you wanted to use the A7III the same way you would use your Canon.

Great review Matti! I always appreciate your approach to gear. It's tools, not children. Take the emotion out and evaluate it from a value and usage standpoint! As a long time Sony user who bounces to Cannon for work from time to time I agree with your assessment of the AF, HOWEVER I think it's a lot closer than you may realize. DPAF implements the same sort of tracking as Sony for faces, they just implement it differently and don't make a big deal about it. The Sony it's a separate setting. To compare apples to apples, you need to have it applied. If you get another demo, try using face detection and locked on setting and you'll have a hard time getting it to hunt, even in low light. That said, DPAF gets on faster, and I trust it more with a shallow DOF like 1.4.

You are very kind with Sony about the autofocus because in your previous video it was really bad ... but really really really bad. I wonder if face-detection autofocus would completely solve that issue. I guess it might. I hope the a7siii will have a flip out screen. I guess not since they tend to use the same body for an entire generation of their 3 full-frame cameras (a7, a7s and a7r) but they might surprise us with the a7siii, which is more focused on video than the 2 others. Fingers crossed.

You say the footage takes more time to color grade than Canon footage. Wouldn't the new Premiere update solve that issue? I am talking about the new color matching feature, you just need a reference picture (or clip), click on a button and let Premiere do the rest (and adjust it afterwards if needed).

Don't really see the point of not using face detection. It's a feature that you should use because that's literally what it's for. If it levels the playing field, it levels the playing field. If it's better, no one is going to not use it just because a Canon camera doesn't have it. Sure, compare the two...but then use it how someone would use it and compare those results because they would be a lot closer I'm sure. Also, it wouldn't make sense to switch if you have a 1DX Mark II. Video features are similar, besides the better codec on the Sony and difference in form factor, battery life, etc. The issue would be trying to match specs when looking at the two when one's a $5-6K camera and one is a $2K camera. For those who don't have the glass yet, it's an obvious choice as of April 2018. The 1DX Mark II is an obvious choice for someone with a 1DX Mark II.

one thing about my 6D ii, all of the AF points are only in the center of the frame, even the 1DX ii has the same, they are all packed in the center, the new Sony has more 90% coverage, that's interesting.

And this is their "entry level" mirror-less. Agree with all your points Matti Haapoja. Using the A7ii for three years now. (Battery life is a bummer). Maybe I will get the 7iii now. Or should I wait for the 7s iii? I am sure that is going to blow everything away in terms of video!

I switched from canon to sony this year, and I was a little bummed when they released this camera. But I also went with the a6300, so I wouldn't break that bank incase that happened. For me, I've been super impressed with Sony lately. I'm an at heart canon shooter, but Sony really has been crushing it!

I'm sure this has already been stated, but the A7sIII will really be the camera to watch for, I would think. Still, to get your feet wet with Sony, the A7III seems like a great point of entry.

I think with vlogging you might want to switch the AF to not responsive so it doesn't try to hunt for new target when you're not moving

The S&Q slow mode is not 100mb/s. You only get 100mb/s in 1080p @ 120fps in movie mode or a preset mode. Because the S&Q mode slows it down in camera, it uses a much lower bit depth. Film in normal mode and slow in post!!!!

We are waiting for our shipment! I'm a canon girl (photography) but with starting to film weddings we needed something lighter on the gimbal. So bought the A7III for my husband to mainly use on the gimbal. I"m really struggling though with my own camera upgrade for film making. I currently have two 5D mark III and a bunch of L-lenses. UG! If i switch sony i would want to stay native on the glass for the AF purposes for weddings. But I'm also considering the 1DX but man, that price point! HOWEVER, sony camera + native lenses might equal the amount i'd pay for a 1DX mark ii with my current lenses. So unsure on what to do....file sizes and cards scare me on that thing!

Ok this makes a little more sense in regards to focus. It seems like most that use video in this format are using constant focus with face detect. Great review! Thanks!

You can install the Technicolor Cinestyle on the Canon to get some dynamic range back in the Canons. Just make sure you further modify that picture style to bring sharpness/saturation/contrast to 0, and add an additional +2 to color tone (so the skin tones come out more yellowish rather than too red). I have this installed like that on my Canon 5D MkII and my brand new M50, and particularly on the M50, I get at least 1 to 2 stops more of dynamic range back.

superconfused about the autofocus on this camera and if it actually works. you said it didn't focus on you face when you had face detection off, but that it probably would if you only had it on. Well why didn't you have the function on in the first place to give it the best chance possible. It seems to me like cutting of it's leg and asking it to run... just not gonna happen. Will the autofocus always search the way it did in your vlog? I didn't understand if the autofocus worked or not...

I'm fairly certain some of your AF issues stem from shooting SLog with that af system. I think the AF system uses whatever picture profile you're set on and that low contrast profile doesn't help it much. The contrast detection part of the AF system will be pretty much unreliable and force reliability on the phase detection system alone.

I did find the focus issue in the Maui video to be distracting. The out of focus to focus interval even being a bit slower would have helped. The fast focus step hunting makes me feel like I'm watching the Blair Witch Project.

I totally feel you! Thanks so much for your honest and non-biased review 👍 I got my A7III on release day and hoped, I could live the adapter-life, so that I could use my Canon-glass for my 5DIV AND the A7III as well. Well, it didn't work out, so I got the 24-70 2.8GM. Nice lens, but f*in expensive. And that's really the only downside of Sony at the moment. They have very nice glass, but it comes at a very premium price and as long as Sigma and Tamron sit on their asses and only put out half-assed adapted FE-products (still hoping for the Tamron 28-75), it'll probably stay that way. I still love the A7III for it's image-quality, it's size, it's usability and the overall feeling and so it quickly "degraded" the 5DIV to a photography-only-camera, while I more often than not grab the A7III when going out to shoot.

Nice review Matti! When I talked to the folks at Sony I was pretty excited about this camera, such a good price point for what you can get out of it. And the focus thing is a bummer, but I think as you use Sony more and more you learn how to better avoid the focus hunting (but it still happens from time to time!)

Great video, good comparison and review of the camera. Can’t wait for it to come in the mail. It’s taking tooo long. But honestly, what in the Fuuuq were you thinking about NOT using face detection. That’s an unfair test. USE FACE DETECTION. KEEP IT ON NORMAL TRACKING (Not responsive) And boom, I’m sure the autofocus would be perfect at nearly all times. Cuz face detection literally helps so much on an a6500. It just puts a white box around your face and stays in focus.

Matti, photographers do NOT want a flip screen. I understand the obvious benefits for video (and vlogging in particular), but for still photos a flip screen has only one application, being selfies. I love shooting from the hip as well as shooting macro without a tripod. Tilt screen is the way to go for these. Also, a tilt screen feels way more sturdy. Anyway, great review! I think I might start saving up for this bad boy.
