OP is an all star. Tom dropped the ball. OP called for medical intervention even though Tom is the one that should have noticed first.

For those who have family members with dementia or other mental illnesses/disorders, please for the love of humanity, don’t bring them to a geriatric psychiatric ward at a hospital (the one I work at is a 2 week stay) with anything that has laces, ties ect. No phones, watches, jewelry, clocks, picture frames (can have pictures though) if you can please send sweatpants and nothing with buttons. It may sound silly but it is less stress on patients when they can get dressed quickly when I have to go in and help them. Also please read and review all the information on the facility you go to and make sure you follow the instructions. It is so important that you know what to do and or bring.

They are allowed to have phones but no laces is a must so they can't hurt themselves

@@RobinSiwula-s7b unfortunately in the ward I’m working in they are not allowed personal phones due to a situation years ago involving a patient calling the police multiple times a night they can call family in the afternoon however using unit phones .

Dementia strongly transforms personality, often for the worse, if not cared for by trained professionals. And even then, it's not perfect. Sounds to me Carl was still at his early stages, so I let you imagine how it would have been at later stages if that medical family intervention didn't happen

I figured it was declining mental health, but you can only help someone as far as they want to be helped.

That was my first thought as well. I used to work with seniors and within a few minutes into the story I knew the cause was either cancer or dementia and unfortunately it’s the latter 😢

While the declining mental health contributed to his memory loss, I believe (from personal experience) the hypertension affected his aggressive attitude the most.

@@Rorschachqp also true. Mood changes do happen with untreated hypertension and untreated type 2 diabetes.

It could be to fit the narrative of behavior dysfunction, a medical symptom was the underlying cause. However it was clear Carl’s accident with the shelves was done with purpose. Carl for the most part is an a..hole. Yes he is their a..hole, but one just the same. Accepting faux guilt, shame, and humiliation has many caretakers damaged, when care for these people is extreme. Been there, done that, and got the scolding.

At his age a geriatric physical exam is warranted. Stroke, Alzheimer’s, dementia and a hundred other conditions could be the he cause.
