Thanks for posting this - I had the Willie the Whale album and picture book when I was a little kid - probably 1968 or 1969 - and never actually saw the full story. I visited my mom at the nursing home today and for some reason thought of the old Willie the Whale record/book she bought me over 50 years ago - and KZitem didn’t fail!

And there's something heartbreaking about this too, it's the welfare of whales and dolphins that are in constant threat by men.

One of the things I find most impressive is that Nelson Eddy is able to give Willie and Tetti Tatti unique personalities in his vocal performance. I’m pretty sure he drew inspiration from impresarios and other singers he met and knew in his career. He was much more than just a beautiful voice.

Something that I think makes this story both sweeter and sadder is that it is somewhat reflective of real life. This short came out in in 1946, when the whaling industry was still in full swing, with up to 80,000 whales being killed each year and many species nearing extinction. Then, in the late 1960's, people from the US military that were listening for Russian submarines on hydrophones sent recordings of strange sounds to a pair of marine biologists called Robert Payne Scott McVay, who identified them as the vocalizations of whales. The discovery that whales sing gained extreme public interest and caused the foundation of new conservation movements, eventually leading to the ban of commercial whaling in most countries during the 1980's.

I cannot believe the following... This morning (August 30, 2024) for the first time since 1971 I thought of Willie the operatic whale. Saw it on a Sunday night on NBC in the Bronx, NY. My younger brother was 9 and I was ten. I was very excited watching something Disney--- until Willie was murdered. Yes, it haunted me for years and I was furious. From that day on I was through with anything Disney. To me the man was an old tyrant. How do you show something like that to children?? It was a masterpiece until the unfortunate scene. 😢😢
