Hey, correction. We are up to ep 48 not 49. Got my wires crossed in the intro. Thanks Obama.

The whole communication chain with all the secondary characters is one of my favorite parts of the show. It underscores how many people Ed and Al have inspired.

The truth is.. Alex could have probably beat his sister in combat if he wanted.. but he's too nice. Like, if he pulled out any of his alchemy it would have been over most likely. Still a funny scene.

Yup, the fma:b ladies definitely give those of the avatarverse a run for their money in terms of proper female representation in all aspects. They're like mature counterparts.

One thing I like about FMAB is that most of the main cast are grown and mature adults. So many anime don't seem to do it well. They don't really do the 12 year old who looks 30 trope in the show, though that's probably mostly the art style and fantastic voice actors.

Honestly I feel like FMA being written by a woman went a long way towards that. Almost all other similar manga are written by men, and the women are almost always sexualised, or pathetic, or have no personality, or all of the above. FMA writes women as just being badass characters exactly the same as the men. Just people. And that's not to say that some of them aren't hot! Armstrong is the hottest anime lady ever for me. But they're always dressed appropriately for their setting, always proportionate (no teeny tiny waists) and the men are just as attractive (Alex Armstrong has muscles upon muscles!). And there's something about the way they're written that is so relatable for other women, that it makes me wonder if the FMA author is just as sick of the way (some) mangaka write women as the readers are.

Shunkan Sentimental is such a banger, hot take but its the best song in the show and when you hear it you could easily solo a homunculus.

Watching this reaction. during The Armstrong fight when Alex is calling for Mercy you realize that Olivier is pulling Alex’s hair into the other room.

I always wonder if Grumman says "Lieutenant Hawkeye" because not even the higher ups know they're related. It seems incredibly weird honestly. I guess Rebecca might not know that he's her Grandpa though but still.

My head Canon is that he slipped a message into her back pocket. He was worried that they were being watched and decided to act like a perv to make it go unnoticed. Still not cool but maybe a little less terrible.

Its fitting that all the female characters are great because the original author of the series is a woman!

It’s sad to see how ready some people are to praise Olivier as this strong female character. She hates demeans and generally mistreats her brother for not taking part in the massacre of innocent civilians during the Ishvalan civil war even after finding out that it was right for him to do so. I personally don't think thats cool, like, at all
@steelydan1

I think it's more that she believes instead of "running away like a coward", he should have stayed and fought to PROTECT the civilians that were being slaughtered. She thinks he's a coward because he didn't have the resolve and willpower to stand for his beliefs. Also, she even says that she has her own misgivings about the Ishavalan Civil War and what Amestris had done there. Not saying that I *agree* with her, but it seems to me that there's a bit of a deeper point to her public attitude than just "she hates him for not being more of a war criminal".

That's a fair interpretation. My interpretation of her being hard on Alex (who I love as a character, too), is more because he didn't stand for anything, back during the war. She chastises him, if I recall, not so much because he didn't follow orders, but because he didn't have a 'spine'. He ran away. And that's one of his regrets as well; he didn't fight for what he believed in and go against the military's orders back then. I feel fairly confident that if he had stood against the orders, Olivier probably would've held a lot more respect for him than she has.

Just to add to what the other two commenters said, that doesn't make her not a strong female character. She is objectively strong, and pretty badass most of the time. "Strong" doesn't mean moral or kind.

Was Oliver in Ishval during the war? Seems very hypocritical if she wasn't taking part either.

It's perspective. I think it's fair to not like her for having that stance, but she also has a lot of soldiers under her command that rely on her and ultimately respect her. Alex Was also in the right for objecting to the war. But I don't think it's right of her to put Alex down over it despite the fact that in her shoes, it makes sense. Some people are more compassionate and others prefer the trial by fire route in life. But if you watch her actions closely, she does care about those around her, and she hates the treachery of the military and sees them as traitors to the country which she ultimately serves more than the military itself. She's a hardass, but ultimately she is a good person just with an abrassive personality because that's what is required of her for her job/life.
