It could be driven as semi auto, changing gear or put in top at a stand and driven off it would change gear by itself

why call it an AEC if it has a LEYLAND engine ? seems a bit odd, like calling a Bedford a Scammell.have i missed something ?

The majority had AEC engines but a few like this one had Leylands.

Although London Transport preferred AEC engines, they did take some Leyland engined Routemasters to get the vehicles on the road asap. Large numbers were needed to facilitate trolleybus replacements and for other routes served by RTs.

Funnily the Leyland engine from then is very similar to the Cummins engine used on the LT re-engine project in the 1990s.
