Yeah they're totally different people. John ended up like lobotomized by his junkie years and consequent rehab. I prefer a lot the 1990-1992 era not just for the musical part of it but also because it shows young John's musical integrity and incorruptibility. But this is just my opinion.
@dmoore0079

Mattia Di Fatta I totally agree. I've read Anthony's opinion through "Scar Tissue", where he says John really didn't want to be there. Unless John is an amazing actor, his body language is saying otherwise. John even credited Anthony for the basis of a song that he clearly holds in high respect...how cool is that?
@mattiadifatta697

TheOunceler Well of course it would have been better if young John was cool with being in the band like older John but what I'm talking about is his solid music principles that somehow faded with time. Young John is such an interesting person and he went thorough so many phases in just 4 years! :)

An older black guy in my apprenticeship class who is a huge fan of rhcp in their early days lived in Los Angeles and he was going to rehab sessions in the mid 90's. When they were in line to sign in the lady at the desk asked for their last name the man in front of him said "frusciante". When he heard that and looked at him he couldn't believe his mind and the 30+ other ppl there had no idea who this man was. He was so nervous to talk to him but he had a nice conversation with him about life. He said he was real genuine and was in no way a stuck up bitter rock star. Nothing was mentioned about about him being so famous or the break up. Then when it was time to go he couldn't help but ask what happen to him and the peppers. He said "we're back together man, coming out with a new album soon" about a year later "Californication" was released. This story has always blown my mind. He got to see and speak with John in such a desperate yet innocent and natural state. Anyways,what a great tune

No John realized he was being kind of dismissive towards the rest of the guys on the song by saying "cool guitar part though" like Yea well my parts good though. That why Anthony said THOUGH! John caught that & started complimenting flea all of a sudden to not seem self centered. He was very young here & shit was taking off into the stratosphere so his head was really spinning. He had to be the "reluctant rock star" cause that's what he learned growing up. It's so dumb but it is what it is. You know 95% of people had "no intention to be a rockstar" lol GTFOH!! Only when you get older do you realize what bullshit that is. He didn't learn that yet.

This video has entirely changed the way I listen to music. At 2:16, John says, "Don’t get your mind in that position where you’re just judging each song for whatever you can get out of it. Just listen to it for what it is." That's actually really profound. I used to look down my nose at 95% of the music I heard (including the Red Hot Chili Peppers, unfortunately) because I thought they were "sell outs" or they weren't in one of the genres that I liked, or I didn't like the sound of the singer's voice, or whatever, but I realized I was sort of comparing every song to a standard of what I thought good music was, and if it didn't meet that standard, I would dismiss it. It's incredible how much good music you'll miss out on if you do that, though. Now, I find that if you put a bit of mental effort into it and try to find something cool about a song, you'll open up a whole new world of good music that you used to think was crap.

I reached out to Bram Van Splunteren, who conducted the interview and directed the documentary, and asked him why he didn't like Funky Monks. Here's what he had to say : "I liked the riff, just like John does it in the boat, but I think the singing is very boring and very repetitive.[...] Also the drumming is kind of simple, and I like the bass part. And the middle part to me is the most exciting part, when John does a solo" He went on more in depth about what kind of songs he's into : "I'm not so much of a funky riff man, I'm more of a 'song' man, I like good songs, like they did in the late 90's when John rejoined the band. By The Way, and Californication and the whole Stadium Arcadium album, those had really good songs, I'm just more of a fan of that, more melodic. [...] It's just a taste, it doesn't mean anything, like I said on the boat it's not really important. These sort of repetitive riffs, it just doesn't do it for me, I'm more interested in melodies." He then sent me a link to a KZitem video of Wet Sand, adding : "I like this song a lot. So much happening melodically. Even towards the end of the song a whole new melody is introduced." There you have it folks. M. Van Splunteren would also like to know what people think of his documentaries, how are they viewed almonds the community, and would people like to see a new one now that John is back? Please share your thoughts and I'll make sure to let him know. This might spark something ;)

it's funny to see how Bram van Splunteren gets into conflict with musicians. His Pinkpop Danzig interview, and also Pinkpop with Mike Patton have always been stuck in my memory. I think most of the triggers are because he himself is not a musician. He makes documentaries which can be like nice conducted compositions in themselves. But the analogue to a sexy, horny groove that just makes your ass wiggle - as a musician, makes you wanna also play it, become the groove - this kind of analogue isn't there for a director of documentaries. So it's harder to relate to i guess. Also, i feel that's when i like it when musicians interview musicians, or musicians are somehow involved in the artistic content of an interview or documentary.

How can you dislike John? he is the fucking man, I love how he gets so excited to explain how funky monks came up... masterpiece!!

Yeah well, if you read Scar Tissue or even watch John's interviews from 1994 in his house, he clearly states that he wasn't happy at all at this time of his life, especially in Amsterdam (where the video was shot). John is a much happier person nowadays.

A pesar de los años y su cambio físico radical, John sigue haciendo los mismos movimientos de hombros y gestos al tocar, sobre todo en el minuto 1:41
