I'm flabbergasted that, having grown up outside of Boston, and having a life long love of history, i had never put much thought to this conflict till your videos on it. (Prior, i knew that King Philip, a native American, had fought a war against local colonists...that's it.)

@@nancydenton7496 The conflict had a lot of nuances that defy good versus bad. To the English, the Indians were seen to make the women do all the hard tasks like building shelters, butchering the game and so forth while the men hunted and fished and fulfilled the role of warrior. This was all very strange to the English who endeavored to spare their women from brute labor. Also, hunting was only for royalty back in England. Many colonists at this time were new arrivals. So, it was a complete culture clash. I think those details are in her book.

I am an early Americanist with a focus on war and American society. While my primary focus is on the American Revolution and Early Republic, the colonial wars fascinate me. If you are looking for other works on King Philip’s War and Anglo-Native American combat, check out Jill Lepore’s “The Name of War,” Patrick Malone “The Skulking Way of War,” Guy Chet “Conquering the American Wilderness,” and John Grenier “The First American Way of War.

Born and raised in Hadley, MA... I have been obsessed with this history for the past few months. Ridiculous, the degree to which the story of our land and society is hidden from public schools and knowledge.. This is truly a fascinating chapter of our history and should be reexamined today within a more focused and productive framework. Lets step up.

I have come to love your stuff. I have been an avid armature historian for as long as I can remember, (So was my Dad, and my Daughter has her Masters in American History.) I was born in Lynn, MA, and now live in Salem. My particular area of "expertise" (I flatter myself) is The Trials of 1692 and New England History up until the Civil War. I am also my Lodge Historian, and we received our Charter from the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts (Established 1733. The Third OLDEST Masonic Grand Lodge in the World.) in 1779, and it has Paul Revere's Signature!. My wife really introduced me to King Phillip's War. She is an Aquinnah Wampanoag, and, like you, really thinks more should be taught about it. Now all I think is "Give me more!" SHE approves, so you must be doing it right! Please keep up the good work. I love all your stuff, and I learn things in the process.

Another good book on this subject is David Silverman's "This Land is their Land." It focuses more on immediate indigenous-English relations (the beginning of the Plymouth colony), but it does give an interesting and original view on this matter. I highly recommend this as a book on the subject of the early New England colonies.

I would also recommend “Our Beloved Kin” by Lisa Brooks which tries to use Native ways of knowing (things like tracing kinship networks, “reading” the landscape, and oral tradition) in addition to English documents to understand the experience of the war from the Native side. Traditional historians reviewed it pretty unfavorably because of its use of some techniques (short pieces of informed but still imaginative fiction, for instance) outside the traditional academy, but at the very least it’s essential reading for understanding how some contemporary Native people think about the war in the absence of written records.
