Very interesting episode, particularly the relative conductivity information (stainless V copper). Thanks!

That's I think one of the downsides of ANL fuses. Yes they're easier to replace but that same ease makes the replacement more error prone. With MEGA fuses you have to remove the bolt and washers completely so you automatically pay more attention to the process.

I did not know that many of those fuse holders are not rated to 105C! Would you recommend NOT installing these in the engine room based on this issue?

My guess is very few fuse holders are rated for 105C so not using them is not a solution. We just need to recognize that although we may be using 105C conductors many of the devices in our circuits (not just fuses; also switches, circuit breakers, and other components) are not rated for this temperature and as such we need to be conservative in our conductor sizing, especially with circuits which may be continuously energized for some time (more than, say, 10 minutes for small conductors and 20-30 minutes for large conductors). Even when using 105C conductors, I recommend using 90C or even lower when determining ampacity, especially for continuously energized circuits. This builds in a degree of 'cushioning' into the circuit.

Sounds to me like these fuse holders ought to be supplied with captive washers, freely spinning washers permanently attached to their nuts. I do know they’re used on aircraft wherever necessary.

It's not required, but it seems like it would be good practice to design an electrical system that is not normally operating so near its maximum capacity.

It for sure doesn't hurt to oversize your wiring and thus be able to also use oversized fuses. However, especially with high loads such as inverters (drawing 300A and more), we are already pushing the limits of available conductor sizes, so there is not that much wiggle room. And for smaller loads, oversizing conductors will increase costs and in some cases it will be hard to fit them into existing cable ducts. - Jan

I'm beginning to see the advantage of 48 volt systems. @@BoatHowTo
