FuseFX makes a name for itself creating film quality visual effects on Episodic TV budgets and timelines. They don't think they could do it without 3ds Max.
I have used blender and Maya but whenever I use 3DS MAX, it feels like home.

It's so funny when you see the ongoing hate between Max and Maya, when really not many people are aware that both programs were designed at first by 2 completely different companies. It's only later that AutoDESK stepped in and bought out Maya for removing any competition, and then tried and STILL tries to sell off both programs as being 'different'. NO, just no. 3DS Max ITS INTERFACE is more streamlined for Game Designers. Maya ITS INTERFACE is more streamlined for film and CGI effects. HOWEVER, BOTH are one and the same, in architecture and mostly rendering. They just offer a different workflow, but not different possibilities. What goes in Max can in Maya and back. When you choose between both you choose for the worflow, not for what the hell you think one can or can't. I'm afraid some people will never understand this, but if you do your research, you know that this is true. (Reference? I work with someone who has direct contact with AutoDESK developers on a daily basis). This video just shows that as time goes on, both programs are coming closer and closer together. If I wasn't wrong, AutoDESK mentioned something along the line of converging both programs into one sometime down the future because it becomes almost irrelevant to have a development team for both programs when technically they do the same.

Agree. Im a max user, and the workflow is the diference. Maya is to peculiar with its input output parameter this paramer that, and makes everything look like a big fucking equation. Max just puts it forward as bold as it can. But specially with the plugins market, maya is worthless with its cute fluids shit. You take max with a few plug ins and you got yourself a anything animated rendered beast, for Everything.

I'm not sure I agree that either UI is more streamlined for one thing or another, maybe. Most game development studios started to use 3DS Max because it offered UVW mapping, Polygon modeling focus, and Character Studio. A significant number of artists learned 3DS Max because of that. Maya was always closer to the film industry beginning with Disney. Last I checked Maya still has the upper hand for animation rigging It's probably true that both software platforms are moving together, that was certainly the fear that many artists had when Autodesk bought Wavefront Maya, and is probably the reason that it never has been fully merged. It will be interesting to see if Blender can really be a disruptor in the next few years as a new generation of CG artists come into the market only knowing how to use it.

I work now 15 years with 3ds max and i can tell you there is more than a lot to do for Autodesk specific in the area of VFX! . The biggest problem is that 3ds Max is not one peace of software... it has an very old core and is filled up with hundred peaces of extern software/plugins who are often not well integrated, slow, not furder developed or can't comunicat perfect with each other. years ago they stopped developing there good particle system ("PFlow" it is still single threaded), also CAT an realy good Animation tool of its time is'nt changed since years ...furder there is no intern fire, crowed, muscle simulation, no 3d tracking and every physiktool uses a different engine. So for VFX you need do invest a lot in very expensive plugins like fumeFX, TP, Krakatoar, Rayfire, Massive, PFTrack... I thinke there are programs like C4D or Houdini who are more focused to integrate there now tools perfect in there package and you don't need as much extern plugins to do great VFX.

Problem with Max is that it is not cross platform like Maya (Linux, Unix, Win). Nowadays pipeline is everything, and very few companies are you Max for VFX. Still an amazing tool.

yeah this is just an advert for autodesk really. I mean, even in this video you can see a guy using Houdini. 3ds max, imo, is geared more for game asset creation, in terms of workflow, and maya is more geared for film/cgi. I use either depending on the project.

@@deepspaceninefreak the plug in market rules. houdini is to centralised, one company alone cant be good for everything, forever. you dont see cubase or protools coding every dam audio plug in that you use on their software. why? cause some people out there will just be better at it then avid or steinberg at doing those particular things. same goes for simulation, rendering etc.

i've been used bryce 1 (pirated) and poser 1 (a gift from my dead grandma) with windows 95 (beta) and ms paint (pre-alpha) for texturing.......no mouse or cat...just keyboard with missing enter, ctrl, alt, del and escape buttons. And my home...just like hell....

From most popular 3D Programs > 3ds Max. Cinema 4D. Maya. Blender. I don't like 3ds Max the most. I don't hate it. I just don't like it cuz it doesn't fit on me. Otherwise its very great program yes. and I surely know one thing! Without 3ds Max mostly! There wouldn't be professional video games! Anyway. Really every programs is perfect for sure! Its just that important is which program fits on you to learn it and master it! You can create anything with any professional program! if you know how to use it! and that's it. Its a simple as that to say it!

The dude coming from Houdini just said it. Max rules.... Honestly, ive never seen anything on a movie that i couldnt do on 3ds max. I dont get it. Maya is a complete package, thats it. But max with a few plugs, gets way way ahead of both Houdini and Maya.

+Hashim Ieda yeah basically no more VFX jobs in LA if you're a junior. All the high-end effects work is being done it Canada. This guy speaks the truth. I moved to Montreal to work on Star Trek, and I'm turning down work from Canadian based companies, while I have yet to get on offer from LA....

nah let face it Autodesk destroyed max over the years without any true major update or features or inventions since 2006 and once its become secondary package and entry-level tool and Maya has Lion's share and became the industry standard, they purchase Maya and Now Maya facing the same destiny of 3dsmax from strong competition c4d, Houdini, blender and others 3d packages. I relay hope to see a future of Artistic tools and software without anti-competitive, anti-consumer anti-technology companies like Autodesk and Adobe

The select and move tool in 3ds Max is just stupid... Maya is the best when it has the safety of double clicking first in its select and move tool before you can move some objects. In 3ds Max, people always accidentally move objects. And they always accidentally destroy their 3d model if they don't do it in a safe way, always making sure that the "select objects" is still active when that "select and move tool" always becomes activated after clicking things on the modifier command panel. Unlike in Maya when you can work fast and still feel safe that your 3d model is ok, even if your cat walks on your keyboard, In 3ds Max however, Its just too meticulous to work with. There is no way at all to keep the "select objects tool" to stay selected in 3ds Max. because every time people click some option in the edit poly modifier or many other modifiers it always activates the crazy "select and move tool" and does not return to the "select objects" by default. People often complain that they just didn't recognize before they were done saving their 3d scene that they accidentally altered some detail with their model because they didn't became aware that the "select move tool" was already activated on its own after having been through the modifier command panel.

this could be easily prevented by just pressing once the "q" key - the the manipulator is deactivated. The same can happen in Maya as well. I was pressing the x key to archive the same ( like Max did also before the "quicktoolselctionsomewhat" was implemented in Max)q

Dude, do a favor to yourself and just save what youre working on. Maya is a pain in a lot of aspects. The hypershade is a joke. The simulation tools are about the same as max pFlow and MassFX, maybe exept for soft bodys, well pflow does it, or theres cebas tp for that. But its all the same. I like some things in Maya, and I can do sim and animate, but modeling is such a pain that i just dont see a reason to switch entirely. I dont think i'll have a reason for it in the future. Max just rocks.

+Frank Valle Your comment is so stupid that you didn't even realise Maya is also from AutoDESK. A team this professional wouldn't opt for 3DS Max without knowing that Maya exists. Have you ever checked to use legit sources to back up your arguments...? Maya and 3DS Max can do exactly the same, it's just the worflow that is entirely different.
