Wonderful explination of fillets, chamfers and rounds. I was modeling a small test block with pockets, holes and arcs. Practicing some basic modeling skills since I am new to Fusion. In the model I put in chamfers. In cam i used the 2D chamfer. When I milled the test block on my table top cnc the chamfer did not look right. didn't know why. Now I know the correct way to use chamfer and 2D contours with respect to chamfers. Another great video. Thanks again Lars...

One thing I was expecting to see is when you have to chamfer small drill holes. What I did in Fusion (haven't try yet in the CNC) is usign the drilling operation with a chamfer tool and adjust the depth to make just a chamfer. Is this good or bad? Thank you so much for all the wonderfull videos you make.

For milling a radius in the corner of a pocket, I always try to use an end mill with a significantly smaller radius than the radius I’m cutting, since you can still get dig-in and chatter in the corner if the roll-around is very small, as it is in this demo (it is still cutting with a large portion of the cutter’s circumference). For example, if the pocket had .250” radii in the corners, I might use a 3/8” end mill instead of 1/2”. Of course if the pocket is very deep, that might require flutes longer than standard, which could present chatter/gouging issues as well. I always like to add small radii to profile corners too for purposes of breaking the edges. Let the machine do the deburring whenever possible. Note, however, that just because the CAM graphic shows the centerline of the cutter describing an arc at an external 90-degree corner, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not machining a sharp corner. Even with sharp corners in the model, the CAM systems I’m familiar with will roll around corners instead of making square turns, which would be less efficient. Moving the leadin and leadout to the corner of an external profile is also a good habit. But when you have no choice but to start in the middle of a wall, I’ve found that arc-on and arc-off, even with a large radius, can still leave a dwell mark. I prefer to use a very shallow-angle linear leadin and leadout instead, with an overlap so the cutter doesn’t enter and leave the cut at the same spot. Another great video, Lars!
@cadcamstuff

Hi Roland W Thank you for watching! and thank you for the great comment! You are right, I should have made your point. using a smaller cutter will always be a better option to get around a corner. Best, Lars

Lars, not mentioned here, however, for chamfering on a slope the trace command may be our only option, fought this for a long time until Seth (Liberty Machining) on the CAM AD forum made me aware of using 2D Trace, it's somewhat limited on entry/exit lead in/out but does get the job done. I'd be very interested in other option for this situation if you know of any further. 2D Chamfer, 2D Contour, 3D Contour don't get it.

Popé I don’t remember how he does it here but the solution that worked for me and that others had suggested was to use a scallop operation for the fillet. With my part I did a 3D adaptive and then a scallop for the finish pass and then a countour to clean up the wall. Hope that helps!!!
