For those of you who can't get the sketch to constrain to a point on a different sketch, you can go to preferences and turn on General->Design->Auto project edges on reference. This will allow you to snap the sketch points even when the drawing is on another sketch

When I create a center rectangle....its automatically contstrained to the dimensions I set it at. So when I go to change the dimensions to .25 its just scales in size and gets smaller. When I try to remove the constraints and change the size... its doesn't stay centered on changing it...it offsets and changes dimensions...there seems to be constructions lines adding constraints that I have no idea what I need to do to be able to change the size of the rectangle and it still be centered on the dimension changes

You have HSMWorks, simulation, rendering, sheet metal, a modern intuitive interface that isn't dragged down by elderly users who if you change the color of a button throw a fit. They are basically dragging and dropping all of the features from their best software into fusion 360 and offering it for a reasonable price. Both Autodesk and Dassault are ripping off their customers with yearly subscription fees. They found a hole in the market that they helped create. The only thing they don't have that I want now is frame building/weldment functionality which I use on a daily basis at work. You're considering the equivalent through SolidWorks? 7 grand lump sum and that's with their 10% MAY discount. Just got a pricing invoice yesterday. Solid works isn't currently replaceable by Fusion 360 in my field of work but they're getting close.

@@adskFusion I need to combine Fusion 360 with a CFD software in order to optimize the original CAD design. Can Fusion 360 handle geometry variation in a batch mode? For instance, if I design a basic geometry and want to optimize it according to certain CFD-imposed criteria, would Fusion 360 be able to keep generating-updating the geometry (produce new STL's) until I reach my optimization goal?

Great tutorial, Aaron- almost perfect. Almost: your use of gesture inputs without acknowledgement requires this student to first 1) recognize that an input was made- not always evident, as your use of them is fluid, reflexive, and very, very fast- then 2) slow down the playback to identify the nature of the input. Appreciating basic fluency gaps (chasms!) between expert and student is a primary challenge for instructors of all sorts. Keep up the good work. Much thanks!

I don't understand why multi-national, Billion-Dollar companies can't produce decent training videos. There is NO discipline to the presentation. The author skips around, failing to follow his own or apparently *any* rules of thumb or best practices. How about you actually write down a sequence of events to cover, run some un-initiated trainees through it until you refine it to a decent class, and *then* create a training video?

I know this will probably be a big change for the software, but, is there any way that Capture Position could be completely overhauled? I watched a video by Jason Lichtman (I think?) about capturing position where he showed how powerful it can be when you want to project sketch geometry from multiple locations of a movable component. That's great! However, since each Capture Position operation shows up as a feature in the timeline, I think there are multiple problems introduced: One, if I want to move a component to a different location, I either have to add an additional Capture Position feature, or go backwards in my timeline if it was in that location previously - neither of which are efficient or truly effective. Two, because I have to jump around the timeline or create a new feature to cycle my model between multiple positions, I rarely - if ever - use Capture Position for anything other than when Fusion forces me to. My idea is this: Instead of it being called "Capture Position" and being a parametric feature in the timeline, I think it should be called "Named Position" and function similarly to the Named Views folder. The software would function pretty much the same as it does now; i.e., anything that is not constrained by joints can be drug around in 3D space. The difference is that this will no longer prompt the user to capture the position. If the component is not constrained by a joint, why is it so critical to capture where it is? Like when Aaron moved the clamp so he could apply a joint that moved it back and constrained it the way he wanted it to be. That's a much more intuitive workflow than using As-Built joints, in my opinion, since you can see it happen. However, if the component IS constrained by a joint, Fusion should notify us that a component has been moved and give us options to revert to the previous Named Position, create a new Named Position, or leave everything where it is. The notification is only there to let us know something has been moved in case we didn't do it on purpose; it shouldn't create a roadblock to further design work as the current Capture Position requirement does. Of course, the design history will need to be partially considered, as you can't have a Named Position that exists before its respective component was created. I think the way to remedy this is to have a "Named Positions" folder at the root level, just like the "Named Views" folder, but, inside it, have a sub-folder for each component. That way, once the component is constrained by a joint, we can specify as many positions as we like within its range of motion and have easy access to them. I think that's the simplest way to do it. A really slick ability would be something like a "Configurations" folder that allows us to toggle the positions of multiple components at a time without having to sift through the Named Positions of all of our components. I think this should also come with a new option in the design preferences: An ability to only let joined components be moved by activating their joint handles or driving the joints. This would be super helpful to me when modeling, as it's really annoying to me when my joined components accidentally get moved. Anyways, I know this is a lot, but, I hope this idea is helpful to you all! These videos have been a huge blessing to me!

Anyone know why I can't get symmetry to create the hole on the opposite side of the model when following the tutorial at 39:12? The Model Toolbox appears but only has options for Extrude and Fillet... All the other icons that you can see in Aaron's Model Toolbox simply aren't there - otherwise I was following all the steps fine. If anyone can help I'd be grateful.

I worked out how to do this myself - Aaron asks you to press a keyboard shortcut S for the Model Toolbox - When I did this you only appear to get Extrude and Fillet. I had a look at the online documentation for fusion and the toolbox shown on their site looked just like the one I got without symmetry and not Aaron's. So perhaps this feature has been taken out of the Model Toolbox. Anyway, if you want to do this step you need to go the Create menu (along the top of the screen) and scroll down to the mirror icon. This will bring up the dialogue command box that he uses to mirror the hole. Follow his instructions for the input and you will have a hole mirrored to the other side of the model. This worked for me, so I hope it helps anyone else who gets stuck with the same problem

Hi there.A great tutorial. really helpful, and not rushed or too technical. Thanks. I do have some issues (I'm using the latest version of the software as of this date, running win10). When I get up to the adding pins to the assembly, I have two issues: 1) when I create a new component, via create in the assembly (@42:20min), the dialogue shows up. However, as soon as I select the top of the tree (After deselecting the existing component, to be sure), the new component is added straight away, without confirmation, as soon as I make the selection. I'm aware that I can rename it later, yet very annoying. 2) More frustrating is the fact at in adding the cylinder (@42:20min), I am unable to properly select the existing features to reference. I can kind of do so, yet the faces are not viewed as selectable, and I just have to guess at the centre of where I want the pin to go. It does seem to find the centre and reference the diameter of the hole. Once it is created, it is 'correct', yet there is no interaction possible. Opacity is set to 70% for the existing components, and the other sketches are set as being visible at all levels in the 'saddle' sub-tree. I can't find any settings in preferences that would effect such operational interaction. 3)Finally, the modelling tool dialogue (accessible using the 'S' shortcut) only has the extrude and fillet shortcut icons. How do I add more options? Kind regards M

Due to my experience in other programs, such as Solidworks etc, I can design pretty good, but I have a problem with how I will tell the program to choose this tool and another and generally to run the simulator to "produce" the piece I designed. A want a step-by-step short tutorial :)

I seem to be stuck at 38:39 minutes into the video. When I hit the S key to make the second hole there are only 2 options that show up in the model toolbox. If I try to create an additional hole I get a Modeling error "Can't create hole tool body please check inputs". Any solutions , because the tutorial has been awesome so far and I would love to complete it. Thank you .

Thank you so much. Once yu showed me how to add the tools to the model toolbox I was able to move on. I love Fusion 360 and your tutorial is great too!

About snapping that rectangle. First check your plane orientation. My (Duh!) newbie mistake was trying to draw it across the pipe instead of along it. Check that then try the auto project edges option.

Awesome, but why in the world did you use imperial system? I thought that tutorials should present those better and more universal ways of doing things, and you are using those weird units unknown to the rest of the civilized world.

You say potatO, I say pOtato...haha. I mean, its a minor detail what unit system is used, and easy to change. And, If you saw our analytics you'd know most viewers on KZitem are from the good ol U, S, and A which infamously uses that other system. Glad you liked the video!

this was a good tutorial. Too bad the time got short and it had to be sped up. The one thing missing was how to modify things. If I typed in the wrong length of the pipe for instance I have not figured out how to get back into the dialog to enter a different number, I had to control-Z until it was gone and redo it. Some additional detail on how to correct mistakes would have been great. But by and large a really good session!

I know it's from 2016, but the knew Pin component didn't snap when creating the cylinder. I didn't see it snap when he did it either.

So I’m new to all this and trying to do as I follow. I’m able to make the saddle but when it comes time to drop the second plane to add the brace it won’t let me go down. I’m only able to go from front to back also I can’t see the working planes at the center point like you can in the vid. What do I need to fix or change?

Thank you so much. I think this may be what I've been looking for. You do a great job of explaining things in a very easy to understand way. I am a convert! That is from nothing to something!

Thank you for the video. I just wanted a little more explanation or a video that shows how you were able to build the top clamp and the other design. I was able to design most of the materials except for the last two. I will attempt it myself and if I still have a problem, I will ask. Thanks

How do you get your planes to show up (32:49) in the video - when I select Offset Plane my only options are planes on my model?

Hi, is it possible to export the measured drawings into a LaTeX document as a vector? Something like TikZ? Or is a jpg the way to go?

I wish Comments could access photos so I can show my results. Came out out great though. I even changed it to abs plastic from the render menu.

Your pace is perfect for a beginner! I am glad you chose not to speed it up in order to finish in the allotted time. Do you have any more Fusion 360 videos? How will I know about future F360 videos you release?

This is a GREAT presentation. One thing that is getting skipped over in these tutorials is: how do we use the data panel. Is there a video avail? We gottta get files into the data panel somehow, and it is not real obvious. Help please ....

Have tried to sketch a centre rectangle on an offsite plane; however the edge of the shape doesn't automatically align and lock on to the edge of the component making the rectangle move when dimensions are changed. Any suggestions? 33:39

For a tutorial that goes out to the entire world, you should use the metric system.
