Yes, I said "chamfer" but it should have been "fillet", also I learned that chamfer is pronounced more like "tshamfer". See, I get to learn things too! :)

While we're on the subject of chamfers and fillets for 3D printing, keep in mind that putting a chamfer against the bed is much preferable to a fillet because a fillet technically has overhangs of every angle, which FDM machines don't like without support, while a chamfer allows you to keep things at an angle that printers like. Just a tip for the future as I'm sure you'll be hooked on fusion from now on :)

I've been using a program called Solidworks for my Design and Simulation course in my engineering program. If you know anything about the program, how difficult would you say it would be to transfer over to Fusion360. I have a Mac at home and Solidworks is only Windows, I believe, and rather expensive as well. Thanks

This was a good tutorial for people looking to get started on Fusion360 -- since it can be an extremely intimidating process to start in on. One suggestion I'd make if you're going to do more modeling videos: try to make a very rough drawing that you show prior to modeling so that people understand where the process is heading each step of the way. This intrinsically will "ground" each new step and help reinforce why you're choosing each new process. On top of that, it's just really good practice for people to sketch out what they're trying to model before ever opening the app (you had a very quick one, but it wasn't representative of what you ended up modeling - it just has the basic dimensions). It helps you frame that final form and better logically order the steps required to model it. For reference, I didn't expect you to make the second cap and was confused when you copied the first circle. With that said, great video - thanks!

Hi Bob! I know there are many different ways to do the same thing in CAD and doing extrudes in a nice easy way to explain things to beginners but I felt like I should point out this could have been a revolve and you would have been able to do it in one sketch as opposed to three. (Although it is easier to visualise as multiple extrudes).

Bonus Monday! I'm glad to see you're bringing back the Maker 101 series, even if only with this video for now. I had started learning Sketch Up, but after watching this, I feel there is no reason to continue and I should just jump to Fusion - it seems a lot more robust. Would you agree or is there a reason to know both? Thanks, Bob!

Eric Bartha Sketchup is fantastic as an all-round 3D software (plans, cut lists, perspectives, renderings ++). I even use it for 3D printing. Fusion seems to be specifically for fabrication, though, and has some neat features that are not found in SketchUp (yet). If fabrication is your main intention, go with Fusion. As a bonus: when you learn Fusion, SketchUp will be easy!
@ericbartha6313
7 жыл бұрын
BardBuilds thanks! It sounds like, since I don't have a 3D printer yet and don't do any fabrication, that Sketch Up is fine for now. I'll keep working with that for now. I did 3D graphic and animation in college, so Sketch Up has been a breeze so far.

@Iliketomakestuff
7 жыл бұрын
It's a much steeper curve to be honest, but I think if you plan on doing anything other than general woodworking projects, it's a worthwhile time investment. I still use Sketchup for simple things and floor plan layout but Fusion is SO much more powerful.

Fusion 360 is far closer to tools like Solidworks which a lot of product design groups use. So I agree that if you are planning to do more, 360 is the way to go. Think organically as opposed to geometric......even though on a computer it's all geometric.
