God speed with Outer Wilds and Return of the Obra Dinn. Played them back to back, great games.

It's immediately illuminating to me that so many of my favourite games fall under this category: Obra Dinn, Tacoma, Outer Wilds, Gone Home (maybe a bit more linear than the others, but it has the same spirit of exploration) and I'm sure there's more that I'm not thinking of. And more and more developers seem to be interested in creating this kind of experience, so I'm so excited to see what the future holds for this style of game. All in all, great video, I love the phrase that you coined!!

Also so jealous that you get to play Outer Wilds with a fresh perspective!! That game is simply astonishing, I've never ever played anything like it, and despite the fact that I had some pretty big issues with some parts of it, it remains one of my favourite games of all time

Another excellent video! I agree that games which use gameplay to tell stories are always going to be interesting (and I saw a small clip of Heaven's Vault in there which I'm currently playing. Excellent storytelling unfolding through gameplay/exploration, and of course Inkle are probably the best in the business when it comes to turning dialogue into gameplay)

I'd like to see games do more with archaelogical storyelling than just different types of mystery stories. Find out what happened to the Nomai. Find out what happened to the crew of the Obra Dinn. Find out what happened to Hallownest. It's a difficult challenge for sure because puzzles, deduction, and discovery both go hand in hand with the mystery genre and do a great job of making the player feel more like an active participant in the game rather than just someone pressing buttons to control Kratos/Ezio/Link/etc.
@QuestMarker

This is totally true. I bet mystery games are so prevalent in this category because it is arguably the easiest to do. I would very much love this nonlinear/exploratory storytelling in a big fantasy land of factions - a lot of these games have been traditionally very linear.

Great video, and I love the term Archaeological Storytelling. I think it captures that unique quality games can have compared to other mediums. Games grant us agency, the ability to choose, and with that, we can choose how to interact with the game, and therefore, the story. When developers give us the chance to be the drivers (or non-drivers if we choose) of the story, games become their own as a medium. I believe the best games present a premise and a world, then leave it up to the players to discover it. Morrowind, Dark Souls, Metroid, Outer Wilds, and The Witness are games I think recognize this, and are genre defining because of it. I hope you're able to break out into a larger audience as your content clearly deserves it, I'll be along for the ride!

I played the opening hour of Morrowind a few months back for a video here - and I was amazed how there was hardly any hand holding. Even when compared to Oblivion. It made me definitely want to devote more time to it (I got on the Elder Scrolls train with Oblivion and never worked backwards sadly). Also, choo choo! All aboard. Thanks for your kind words :)

I think the idea of archaeological storytelling and its growth in popularity is also similar to the questioning of why certain games in the early 2010s were so popular. People question why Skyrim was so popular given how outdated the graphics are, when people conveniently forget that it was just a great game to play. Games don't need movie-quality, cinematic graphics, because games aren't movies, they're a medium that I believe is altogether separate. I prefer games with nonlinear storytelling because I prefer to add my own personal input into my gameplay experience. I am the player/protagonist. I want control over the narrative. This is why I really like Skyrim, even 10 years later. The mods and stories with player choices are nearly infinite. Kingdoms of Amalur did a similar thing. KOTOR and Mass Effect was more linear choices, but allowed the player to make decisions. And you mentioned Takoma! Got that for free recently lol. A game that I feel has good storytelling and is somewhat linear and simultaneously exploratory is Metro 2033 and and an indie game called Bottle. Bottle is short, 2 hours, but you take the protagonist down a long path and hear a heartbreaking story. It's depressing but it's linear while still being controlled by the player.
@QuestMarker

I will definitely check this Bottle out. Metro 2033 (and Last Light) are some of my favourites, even if they can get too spooky for me :( But Skyrim - yes. There's a reason it gets ported everywhere. Have there been any RPGs that give you the same sense of wonder when you explore its wonder? Idk. I don't think so. At least, not more than one or two. I remember hearing a designer at Bethesda say that in Skyrim, they wanted every 10-15 minutes for the player to find something "new and cool." Like cresting the hill in the stone path shows you some new vista where you want to get to. And honestly, Skyrim does that really, really well. More than all the big RPGs that came after - Witcher, Odyssey, etc.

@@QuestMarker Yeah! Lol I started playing spooky 1st person games with Alien: Isolation, so my fear vibes went away lol. I just think that as far as linear storytelling goes (with options too), the Metro series does it right*.

This is really the kind of games that I enjoy the most. I know Tom Francis uses the term "information games", but to me it's even simpler, it's just about exploration. The issue is that "exploration" is used to describe a lot of game that really aren't about exploration, but just have a few collectibles spread across a big map. Exploration needs a part of intent, but also some mystery. If you know for a fact you'll find loot or XP, it's not the same thing. And I think what you're calling Archaeological Storytelling (which is pretty self explanatory, so I like that :D) is when narration and exploration are tied together. But to me the "storytelling" part doesn't really matter, for example The Witness is mainly an exploration game, even purely on a gameplay level. I guess what I'm trying to say is that the "storytelling" part, in games, can be even more than "just" telling a story, which I think ties back to the "strengths of the medium" part. Anyways, I think Outer Wilds is a good example of that too, because it has both gameplay and narrative exploration (to put it simply), and I'm sure you'll enjoy this game a lot! (I'm so jealous btw, I'd love to play Outer Wilds and Obra Dinn for the first time again)
@QuestMarker

I checked out Tom Francis' video about "information games" - and man! That resonated with me a lot. That's almost exactly what I'm talking about here. I also learned this is the guy who made Gunpoint, which I also played this year and thought was such a treat. But yeah, exploration is super important (it's the same side of the coin as investigation? they're linked, somehow?). And for sure! Games "telling" stories is something I think super borrowed from film/tv/books. I completely overlooked the whole "medium is the message" idea, but honestly, it's also what this video is about. Haha, I will let you know how my Outer Wilds and Obra Dinn experiences go. I hope to pick them up this holiday season and give them both a whirl. They'll be my palette cleanser between Cyberpunk deep dives ;D

Really enjoyed this video and it really spoke to what I find so compelling about video games. Thinking about how the writing and the gameplay interact with each other is not something that all games seem to do, but that a few of them do excellently. By having the player interact with the story by actually making choices it makes its themes hit that much harder. For me at least. Yet so many of them have the player perform actions that are either irrelevant or contradictory to the message communicated to the narrative, which just confuses the experience. Also The Forest looks fuckin spoooky
@QuestMarker

I feel you. Giving the player some level of narrative autonomy just makes me feel like I am a part of the world and not a movie-goer. Also, the Forest is suuuuuuper spooky. Definitely recommend with friends!

This is a totally fair point! And I would say this "archaeological storytelling" isn't applicable to all genres. Like I would say it wouldn't be in DOOM's best interest because DOOM is about killing demons. But for games that are "cinematic" or "story-driven", I definitely think they can be more archaeological :)
