Most of his pedals are overkill.Still ,he gets some interesting sounds. He even admits that he rarely uses a lot of the pedals!I guess he just likes buying pedals.

I really enjoyed this video! I am a technical guy due to being Left Brain dominant. That's why I am not a good banjo player even though I like playing. Winston, you have some serious signal shapers on that board!!

It's a lot of stuff that gets used sparingly during most shows, but there if I need it. Glad you dig the video!

Really cool video. I run a K&K Twin through an Alix with some very slight reverb and delay from a Dispatch Master that is basically always on. From there I'll add effects here and there...most everything is MXR pedals. I also picked up the bass envelope idea from Will's video. I used the reverb pedal he had for a while but I think the Dispatch Master works better for the mandolin. Since the Dispatch Master's delay and reverb are kept very subtle and basically are there to slightly shape and boost the sound, I also have an MXR Carbon Copy and will pop that on and turn off the Dispatch Master if I want to have a more dramatic delay. Any experience with flangers? I've tried to use an MXR micro flanger to get the effect Will gets but it just doesn't happen. My guess is that pedals are just really, really finicky from mandolin to mandolin. Our banjo player does the same trick of using the GE-7 as a boost. It works great for him, however, I tried it but could never get the sound to quite match up with my non-boosted mandolin sound. The boost on the Alix is fantastic and solves that issue. I've got a buddy who gets great sound through a Baggs PADI and a few pedals for his guitar, but it always sounded harsh with my mandolin. Grace Design and Red Eye are the best I've found for mando. Once again, cool video...also...black cats rule!

I think one of the weird sounds I get from the Boss MD200 started out as a flanger but I've never tried an outright flanger pedal on my mandolin. Definitely thinking about making the jump to an Alix or Felix in the future and maybe an on-board mic, gotta play some more shows and save up some money! I've noticed that FX pedals are very finicky from mandolin to mandolin, my backup mandolin (Eastman MD500 with a LR Baggs Radius pickup) has wildly different settings on all the pedal knobs when I play it, and some pedals just don't work with it at all. Glad you dig the video man, hope to make that Grace Design upgrade soon! -- Winston

I wish I could send you a picture of my pillow board. We have some of the same things, some of the same ideas and concepts for our Mandolin board. I have a TC electronics flashback but it’s not only I use for the delay but for the looper function in it I can’t live without the micro Ron we play Grateful Dead tunes. I have a Hall of Fame I have a TCC electronics octave pedal which is bad ass. Here’s where it’s weird. Internal pick up goes through a Fishman aura to make that less sound like a pick up and I mix that with my Felix by Grace designs with a condenser. The funny thing is on there TV record I didn’t use any of these effects, and my Mandolin was recorded straight in the studio with condenser mics @tillyfoster
