The box is more fun, it looks ridicules, it is bulky and you lose your pro status^^ I don't fly a GoPro around, so the live experience counts. With a box, you got the "I am in the air feeling" With Fatshark style goggles it is more like "my toy is in the air feeling" Bystanders love the box too :) The Ohhhhs and Ahhhs get longer when they experience the box! 60€ with the wow factor for my two-year-old china box compared to 500$ without receiver from MoneyShark^^

Bought the FXT Viper's recently. Really like them. Bought more for price and features than because of wearing glasses. I fly without the lower portion because I like to look at the drone LOS when taking off and check on anyone around me. I use a 3S battery pack with an XT60 connection to power them. A little bulky looking but don't seem to look as goofy as my older box goggles!

Seriously considering these, with lens power of 8.5 needed on both eyes Fatshark style are no good to me, even with custom diopters. Not so much for flying, but when I've finished flying and take my goggles off I literally see a complete blur. Much prettier than my Quanum DIY's!

i like the ev800d's because by accident or slim chance design??? there is a gap between the edge of the goggles and the slots for the headbands, which perfectly snuggly fit a pair of high strength reading glasses, just remove the arms and snap into place, dont even need hot glue or anything, ( thanks to tigger rc for this tip) i also liked how easy it was to make the box longer. they were very uncomfortable at first but the foam softens down a little to be nigh on perfect.

Hi Joshua Great video! I was wondering if this fxt Viper would work using 1.2 GHz ? I am following Mark J's use from RC shed. I have the same Traxxas Summit has him. And wanted his set up.. He uses a fatshark predator V2 goggles with an AV cable. He says to flip switch to turn 5.8 GHz off.Then 1.2Ghz will work.l on FSG. Can these Viper goggles be used (without switch) the same way? I bought the 1.2 Ghz transmitter/ receiver to eliminate any breakup in transmission. Or will I have to buy 5.8Ghz. To get these Viper goggles to work? Thank you maybe you can help me out. Bill

Just got these and am so far very impressed with them. Did a lot of watching of reviews and how they performed and thought rather than spending the same amount for a Rapid Fire module that’s marginally better than the module I had or these, I went with these. I was mostly concerned with the reception but they do every bit if not better than my Tru D module. I wear glasses for reading/up close and these were the hot tip. I’m sure some firmware updates will clear up some of the GUI issues. For the money and clarity I have now it was a good purchase and now I have a ride along pair of goggles. Thanks for the video.

No one prefers a box, but the price of the FPV glasses being TWICE of a drone it’s a huge turn off when, like me, you’re starting in this hobby. I cannot believe how a video receiver and two tiny monitors basically const like two high end drones. That’s why and empty plastic box, with mirrors inside and a tiny cheap monitor can be sold at $170. That’s overpriced too. Not as the FS, but it is. I think this is the biggest single turn off of this whole deal of FPV. A good drone around $250, glasses ? 400. Can someone explain why they are so overpriced?

Thank you for discussing the FCC issue. Joshua it is legal for anyone to receive any frequency. Transmitting requires a license, and the right frequency and power. Have you discussed getting the HAM Tech Class license anywhere? It gives legal access to all sorts of frequencies and uses such as higher power transmitters that are often used by folk without a license not even knowing they could cause problems. Or that the extra power could be their problem. I appreciate your digressions.

This pricey custom inserts lenses just not needed - take out lenses from any of your googles, and glue them inside FPV goggles (even plasticine will do the job, i use Polycaprolactone) - no super exact position required - it will work excellent. If lenses made from optical plastic (most modern lenses) you can dremel them to make inserts from them, but really just inserting inside the mask as is, is enough.

Your review convinced me to buy the Vipers. I was using an old Eachine box goggle with no diversity to which I glued an old pair of glasses, they worked fine, just a little funky looking, but then I'm a bit of a nerd so who cares. I just tried out the new Vipers, I was expecting to be impressed due to all the great reviews but my overall feeling was that of disappointment. Yes the video is clearer and the image sharper but the feeling of immersion is one hell of a lot less. I'll put it this way, it's the difference between holding a post card 5 inches from your face and then increasing the distance to one foot, just a let down with way too much goggle case taking up most of your field of view.

Once my brain goes to $189.00, I feel I am about half way to the cost of the "normal" style goggle and have a hard time justifying the $189. The reason I am looking at these 2 is I had my Quantum Genesis goggles apart and manage to get them to no longer turn on. Don't know if it was me or the bad soldering of some of the components that I notice on the side of the PCB that is not seen when the goggle are apart when I removed the PCB to see what might be wrong.

A word or two to those of you who use Trifocal lenses.... These goggles may or MAY NOT work with your glasses. I use Trifocal lenses and the Viper goggles do NOT work with them. The problem is that the Trifocal part of the lenses take up the top half of what would normally be used for the Bifocal/reading part of the lens. This results in most of the goggle screen being in the Trifocal area, leaving it blurred and not viewable.! The top of the glasses are hitting the goggle frame, so they can't be pushed up to put the goggle screen into the bottom part of the lens (Bifocal/reading) area. I have had to purchase reading glasses and must use them with the goggles. VERY disappointing! This may not be the case with your lenses/frames as they may have a large enough bottom (Bifocal) area to cover the screen.
@JoshuaBardwell
5 жыл бұрын
If you wear bifocals I would suggest getting separate reading glasses just for the viper goggles.
@dwheeld1664
5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Joshua. First, let me say that I am in the process of viewing your videos and they have been very educational. Yes! I HAVE learned something ;) ... The reason that the Viper goggles disappointed me is this... I was very excited by all of the reviewers saying I could wear them with my glasses. I had given up on emersive FPV because I had not been able to find any goggles that I COULD wear with my glasses. I have been flying FPV for years (since before Fat Shark was a gleam in someones eyes) with monitors, and enjoy it very much. When the first goggles came out, I immediately bought a pair and was instantly disappointed because I couldn't see anything but a blur when I put them on. I had to remove my glasses and of course couldn't focus on the screen. After thinking about it a while, I pulled out an old pair of glasses and went to work on them with my dremel tool. I cut the bifocal section off of the lenses and glued them into the goggles. They were not in complete focus, but of course the lenses were from 2 or 3 prescriptions back so that was to be expected, but they were usable. I then took them out for a test flight. In those days, quads hadn't been invented (I'm not going to tell you that I am almost 80 years old). I was flying a glider with 72 mhz radio and 9 mhz video system. I put the goggles on my forehead and launched the airplane line of sight. At about 300 feet high, I took off my glasses, folded them up, and stuck them in my pocket before pulling the goggles down over my eyes. Love at first sight!!! The only thing better would have been in the cockpit of a full size aircraft! After a few minutes of feeling things out, I throttled back and dove down to make a low pass over our flying field. At about 50 feet, the video went dark and then to snow! I tore the goggles off and couldn't focus on anything either near or far. I reached into my shirt pocket for my glasses and of course they turned sideways and wouldn't come out. When I finally ripped them out and almost had them on, I heard the sound of my airplane crashing... Not being able to instantly look up and gain control of the aircraft caused the crash.... I sold the goggles and have been trying other peoples goggles when available. So far, none have solved the problem. This is a long story to illustrate why I need goggles that work with MY GLASSES. Not goggles with corrective lenses mounted inside, or being able to wear reading glasses inside the goggles. In an emergency, I need to be able to pull the goggles off and instantly be able to see the aircraft at a distance, or look down at the transmitter for one reason or another. At any rate, the Viper goggles are the closest I have been to a solution. I just ordered a pair of glasses with standard bifocals instead of trifocals. I told them to eliminate the mid range area (trifocal) and make the entire bottom half for reading purposes. I think this should make the Viper goggles fully usable. Here's hoping! Have a great day and keep the videos coming. They have saved me a lot of time and tinkering!

If you have a shoddy video link, then you need a Monitor instead. You can go back and forth between Screen and LOS flying really easy this way. I have these Vipers, but only for Quad flying or use with a Ground Station.

Hi Joshua, did you ever test the range of this googles? I´m aiming for 5km, but nobody seems to have done range testing yet.

Yes I did. They seemed to do decently. Not exceptional but okay. To go 5 km you'll need specialized antennas.

As someone getting into the hobby and not sure about my glasses being a hurdle; this option gives me a less expensive way to try it out. Thanks for the review.

Saw this on Flite Test Channel in the video "Flying a plane from a Drone" and I really loved the goggles. Good thing you're doing a review about it!

I've got the Quanum DIY V2 FPV goggle kit. It's been doing the job but this is very compelling for me. Mostly since I wear glasses and think I prefer the box goggle style. Fatshark just hasn't sold me yet.

I'd like to hear from someone coming from the quanums v2. The screen is too close for me to focus very well. Limits my flight time due to that issue.

Josh, box goggles outperform any fatsharks in a field of view term. I fly EV800D. It is bulky, takes a lot of space in backpack and looks stupid on a face :) But it have waaaay wider field of view then any common fpv glasses. And when you get use to it, you just cannot switch to anything else.

Obviously box goggles win for FOV. And fat shark style goggles win for size/weight. So it's a tradeoff. Also, huge FOV is not preferred by many pilots. Many pilots prefer to sacrifice immersion in order to be able to see the whole screen at once.

Hi Josh, you wears glasses too. How did you resolved the problem using fatshark? I'm still using quanum Cyclops that are not bad for people wearing glasses....but I'm bored of box style goggles
