00:00 - I. Ouverture: Adagio, Allegro, Lentement, Allegro 08:17 - II. Bourrée 09:43 - III. La Paix: Largo alla siciliana 13:27 - IV. La Réjouissance: Allegro 17:06 - V. Menuets I and II
It' s mighty and joyful, so I chose it as my wedding soundtrack. Some years later I learnt its story: in 18th century the king dont know who underwrote an important peace treaty on the days close to his birthday, and so ordered a sumptuous ceremony in London, with such music. The gala was to be held with magnificent fireworks, designed and managed by the real masters of that age, the Italian blasters, who began working with local laborer. The fires went very badly, Italians blamed London squad, London squad blamed both Italian and the damp and rainy weather, for having caused some fires to ignite early, others nothing at all, others late, some fires didn' t take off while burning, causing an explosion that demolished a balcony, hurting several people. The king was furious, a brawl came out, and many past the night in jail, while the king took on promising not to pay anyone. Not a good wish for my wedding, and now I understand why two friends of my wife, both musicians, took on laughing (I thought smiling) at this music. Luckily my marriage still enjoys good health.

Yes, and legend has it that Handel was a participant in the brawl. He was absolutely furious (it was common knowledge that he had a temper) that his tribute to His Majesty had been ruined. Handel was unabashedly devoted to George II. After all, the Hanoverians were fellow Germans.

Loved and appreciated was Handel's music that he was honoured by being regarded as an honorary member of the British race , his much loved music is as powerful today as ever and as much a joy . This earned him a place along with other great worthies of the centuries by a burial in our British pantheon of notables , Westminster Abbey....

Just listened to a piece of music I haven't heard for 55 years, the V. Menuets 1 and 2. When I was at Primary School (UK) back in the 1960s we used to have Assembly every morning at 9.00, and the teachers would choose a classical record for us to listen to as everyone 'assembled' for information, general tellings off and other nonsense. These pieces of lovely music stuck with me and since I was around 25 I've been an avid listener to all types of classical music, starting out with LPs and now using KZitem and the absolutely incredible Spotify. Who would have guessed how easy it was to become for music lovers! I don't suppose schools play classical music to the little ones any more, and if not they are depriving children of limitless pleasure through their life. I feel very blessed to have attended ordinary little Fryern County Infants and Junior school in Chandler's Ford, Hampshire, and am testament to the fact that you don't have to be posh or upper class to listen to classical stuff. I'm as common as muck, and I love the classics, espcially Tchaikovsy, and regularly sob my way through Swan Lake. Thank you In C for uploading this lovely treat.

The great Russian composers were all from the working class!! 💪🏼 btw, I was born in 1991, and attended a public school where we had music class, and every week we learned about a new composer, and the teacher would play us recordings of great composers, from all practice periods.

Beethoven about Handel : "the greatest composer who ever lived. I would uncover my head and kneel down at his tomb" He had also composed a composition dedicated to H. named "The Consecration of the House" in a very handelian style : double-fugue, heavy use of drums etc. When you are praised by the greatest composer of history (in my opinion) it shows your greatness.

Even if you consider Mozart or Bach the best composers ever, and not Beethoven, they too praised and loved Handel's music. The former sayng "Handel understands affect better than any of us" and the latter having copied a lot of Handel's works indicating great interest for his music and style.
