歌の翼に S.547
7 lieder
Auf flügeln des gesanges
S.547
On Wings of Songs
Composed by Felix Mendelssohn(1809-1847)
Arranged by Franz Liszt(1811-1886)

On Wings of Songs
Composed by Felix Mendelssohn(1809-1847)
Arranged by Franz Liszt(1811-1886)
The original is the most famous and popular song by German composer Felix Mendelssohn.
Mendelssohn was born in a wealthy Jewish family and showed great talent from his early age, died young at the age of 38.
His masterpieces include the Violin Concerto, the incidental music "A Summer Night's Dream" - Wedding March, and the piano collection "Silent Songs," all of which everyone has heard at least once.
The lyrics of "On the Wings of Song" were taken from the "Buch der Lider" (Book of Songs) published by Heinrich Heine in 1827. Many German composers, including Mendelssohn and Schumann, have quoted from this book of poems in their songs.
The lyrics can be summarized as follows
(In a dream, a young man in love with his beloved)
Beyond the far-flowing Ganges, I'll fly on the wings of song!
And in the paradise of red flowers, let's have a good time together.
This is a song in which a young man invites his lover to a utopia. Depending on the interpretation, it could be taken as an invitation to go with him to Heaven.
Both Heine and Mendelssohn were Jewish Germans and were subjected to unjustified persecution.
Heine may have used poetry, and Mendelssohn, who sympathized with him, may have used music to escape from the persecution.
Liszt, who arranged this music, was the greatest composer-pianist of the 19th century, and he established the virtuoso art.
Among Liszt's piano pieces, his brilliant arrangements (paraphrases) were very popular at that time, especially for concerts.
On the other hand, there are also arrangements (transcriptions) faithful to the original works, such as "On the Wings of Song," and arrangements of Schubert's songs, and there are many works that are full of charms and brightness. Yet, we should learn compositions and colorful colors of Liszt.
