Gåte has been very popular here in Norway for 20 years with their mix of folk and rock. The style of singing Gunhild is doing is called kulokk/herd calling and has roots at least a 1000 years old. And text and music speaks to the Norwegian soul. Gåte is amazing and are proud we are sending them. And Heilung are amazing Maria also sings in a style of herd calling/kulning that are just as old.

Glad you mentioned the Heilung reference, first thing I thought you would mention! I like that this is a mix of folk and rock, and very "Norwegian" in a way, so glad it won and represents us in Eurovision!

Wow, you reacted to my favourite of ESC 2024! Cool stuff, it's interesting to hear a Canadian take on a traditional Norwegian song. The next thing I can't wait for is your take on the Irish entry this year, Bambi Thug.

Yeah the band members are playing around and having fun as Eurovision does not allow live instruments for some reason.

As someone new to Eurovision, the fact that instruments are not allowed is wild... but I guess it's done to avoid any mishaps during the live show? No idea...

Not "Gate" but "Gåte". "Å" is a totally different letter from "A", not an accent. 1:41 No. It has nothing to do with Vikings. The story is from our medieval/catholic period. As for the music, it's pointing towards a period of history we have a romantic relationship with, around 1800. 5:01 More the period just after the vikings. Our time as a independent catholic nation, after the Viking age but before the great plague left us under Danish rule was actually a period of greatness for us. And our king was even considered for the position of holy roman emperor at one point by the pope.

I'm Norwegian. But not even I can figure out the tekst.... No vikings here, just a very weird song. Too bad Keiino got second place once again. They will never get back - too bad.
