"Yes...but on the lane to the right of yours." ....oops... We've also had score cards for platoon shootings of "Alpha, 19/20, Bravo 20/20, Charlie, 0/20, Delta 35/20"

As a German soldier I can tell you a few things about how we're trained to shoot. First, never lay down the barrel on an obstacle, that's what the handguard is for, and keep your hand underneath it. That way the free swinging barrel can keep swinging. Also we're taught that we shouldn't put too much pressure at the magazine. Though this is in my opinion or experience just a problem if old mags are being used, which can lead to unproper feeds. Having shot these optics pretty much I can tell you that it's no problem to work with it, though I am very happy to work with the new G36A3 for the last couple months. The new one has way better optics etc etc.

Hi, great video. but as a ex-german military armorer I´ve some additional points to the G36 that you missed in the Video: 1. Red Dot Sight: You missed to mention that you got a Light sensor on the front of the Red-Dot (opposite from the Switch). It detects the brightness of the ambient light and dimms the Reddot accordingliy. This is for entering some darker areas (f.E. If you move into a builing or covered Trench). It is designed to dim down the reddot so you get not blinded by the Dot. You can test the funktion as follow: Turn on the Dot, and then simply cover the photosensor at the front of the Dot. you will notice that the dot gets dimmed down, and will get bright again as you remove the cover from the sensor. 2. When shooting you should never place the Flashider or Barrel on your cover, but your handguard. The G36 provides a freefloating barrel, which only works if you let the barrel float. If you need an additonal point of contact while shooting always use the handguard to lie the weapon on, never the barrel itself. (thats maybe one of the reasons for not hitting with well aimed shoots, because the barrel can not vibrate like it should anymore, leading to your bullets going off not exactly where they should.) You did it right shooting from the wall, using the handguard as point of contact instead of the barrel. 3. You can loose your Scope zero after some shots fired, (or some more), if you don´t do it the proper way; You need to wiggle the scope front end, useing your finger, to allow the single spring under the plasticcover at the front of the scope to "readjust"; and than check again if your scope is still zeroed correctly. If you only turn the set-screws and don´t wiggle the scope, the spring can be in and odd position, and will set itself after shoots fired, altering your zero. (most guys don´t know it, and its not mentiond in the instruction manuals as far as i know.) 4. you mentiond "cheekweld the high reddot" somewhere; In the german military shooting concept you do not cheekweld the Rifle: That is bechause the german bodyarmor won´t let you do it proper anyway, especialy with the "long" buttstock you use on your sample gun. Check out this video to get a glimps on how it is trained in germany: kzitem.info/news/bejne/lmicr4Shnl-bd4Y This is a bad video (as all Bundeswehr produced videos) but it shows will be Shoot-Instructors getting trained, not experts showing how to do it perfect, but you get an idea how it should look like. 5. the "flexing" shown at 13:05 in your video is much more than anything I´ve ever encountered in the german army. The "block" in wich the rear of the carringhandle is screwed in should be more riddgit and there should be no flex at all. I´m not sure what causes this flex at your gun, maybe it´s a problem with the reciverbody material or it´s mesures, but thats not how it should be! The original HKV carring handle needs to be hammered down onto the Block with a rubber hammer, like the tommybulid metal rail you mentiond. If thats not the case with this build, than probably the mounting block on the reciver of for the HKV, or the HKV itself are out of spec. Also I got something to a point mentioned by Jumper Harz relating to not use the Magazin a a point of contact with the ground while shooting prone: Absolutly False but most guys in the german army never learned it better and are repeatin this false statement and it still got teached by some instructors who don´t know better. Fact is, and thats what get teached today at the Shoot-Instructor- and Shoot-Teacher-Courses in the german Army, that it´s perfectly fine to dig the dirt with your magazin while shooting prone! It will not lead to double feeds or any other malfunctions. Ofcourse if you use damaged magazins with broken feedlips it can happen, but also if you not put the Magazin to the ground. anyway big thumbs up for the video and keep on doing your good work!

maybe because the G36 has a non adjustable buttstock? They improved the G36 alot with the update package, it has a aluminium handguard with rails now for installing any optic you want, also an adjustable buttstock. So it still looks like the G36 with a lower hand grip, not as high as the original. So basically a HK416 is nearly the same with different looks.

I think I know the problem you experienced. The springs with which you adjust the sights sometimes come under too much tension. When you now fire the recoil of the rifle may lead to relaxing the springs and the optics go astray and are not zeroed anymore. The Problem was/is known in the Bundeswehr. The field manual recommends after zeroing the rifle to push softly against the outgoing optic glasses with your thumb. We went over to knock with a Swiss army knife against the side of the optic carrier which does the same job but doesn't bring dirt on the optics. After that do 3 to 5 more rounds to check if the rifle is still zeroed. If not rinse and repeat with zeroing otherwise you are good to go. Hope this helps. Cheers

With the SA-80 system, the L85 and L85A1 suffered wandering zero problems with the SUSAT, but not with Iron Sights; this was eventually tracked down to both the mounting rail itself, AND the way the SUSAT was zeroed. Both issues were fixed by the time the L85A2 came along, but at great cost and remedial work (I'm a former reservist in the British Territorial Army as was, now it's called the Army Reserve; during my time, I was a unit Armoury storesman, and a Range Management Officer (SA(B)90, for those who know the qualification); we had the self same issues with SUSAT-mounted weapons as the regulars did. Therefore, based on both the above, and your video, I thoroughly agree that the sighting systems of the G36 Dual Optic would appear to be caused, primarily, by mounting of the sighting system.

As my agency's ordnance officer and tactical team member I assigned myself the sole G-36K our agency had in inventory. Due to the complete non-cooperative attitude by H&K USA to any agency buying fewer than 100+ guns from them, they wouldn't answer my phone calls or emails about a Picatinny rail or any other possible accessories that would increase the efficacy of the rifle. I was, therefor, stuck with the standard "dual sight" system that the weapon shipped with. That said, I found it to be completely serviceable. It was oriented at the appropriate height above the barrel, allowed both-eyes-open operation in both the red-dot and magnified- view and seemed to be fairly ergonomic, if one hadn't experienced some of the better optics solutions out there at the time......................

Very interesting video! I myself always found the sight fit well until I had the chance to shoot with different optics on the very same rifle. During basic training I shot with this set up as every soldier in germans does, later I had the chance to use it with an Eotech and an Aimpoint Comp 4. It was way easier to use the rifle ecspecily for the "Nahbereich" the close quarter shooting drills. I always thought I was because the better quality of the optics in general. But to mount these optics the rifle were fited with an all steel picatiny rail. After watching your video and demonstrations I think that these rails were at least as important as the optics. Thank you for this very interesting content! I shot this gun for quite a while now and also trained many young soldiers on it but I honestly have never noticed and or checked this amount of shift in the sigth. with the comment of how the optic mount flexes, i can't say i'm surprised. normally i'm a proponent for polymer, but I still think the G36 used it in places that don't work to it's strengths. I think that the AR platform has the concept right, where the barrel mounts into a metal receiver, and any optic mounts directly to that receiver. and then other parts are made of materials that dont need to be as rigid. i still consider AK side mounted optics to be slightly shaky, as i feel the mounts would act as a lever, and allow for (admittedly minute) flex or rattle.

It's definitely a product of its time. When the G36 was being brought into service, the idea of every single infantryman having a magnified optic was almost unheard of. The magnified optics available now are so far ahead of the early iterations like the Hensoldt or SUSAT that it's a no-brainer now to have them on your rifle.

First time I got to check one of these out was in Bosnia SFOR6 in 1999. And we had a group of German troops come through Camp McGovern and they were all armed with these. At the time we were all still using iron sights. So when I got to handle one of these. I was really impressed about their dual optic. And how light the rifle was. It was like seeing something from the future for me. I was really jealous.

This is incredibly cool seeing a reason for all the anecdotes about the point of impact wandering. Makes a lot of sense that the rifle was fine, but the rifle-optic interface left something to be desired.

Most of the people I work with find the optics of the rifle to be it's big drawback. Short eye release, narrow FOV, big splodgy red dot which is a hassle to deal with when it's raining. Just a big, splodgy mess. No matter how often you wipe it. We also had condensation forming in some of the older guns. Also don't believe the fancy promo shots, this rifle in this configuration was still being used on deployment in mali in at least 2016-17.

I asked GPT about that horrendous red dot, this it what it said: While the intent of the red dot sight was to provide quick acquisition of targets at close range, the small size of the sight picture could make it difficult to use in practice. It's possible that this was an oversight in the design of the G36 dual optic, and the size of the sight picture was not adequately considered during the design process. Alternatively, it's possible that the designers of the G36 dual optic prioritized other factors, such as weight, durability, or cost, over the size of the sight picture for the red dot sight. It's also worth noting that the G36 was designed in the 1990s, when red dot sights were not as prevalent as they are today. The red dot sight on the G36 dual optic may have been state-of-the-art at the time, but by modern standards, it may fall short in terms of sight picture size and usability. Regardless of the reason, the small size of the sight picture on the G36 dual optic's red dot sight has been a common criticism of the system, and it's possible that this design flaw contributed to the reliability issues that led to the German military's decision to replace the G36.

Thank you for this video. I find your assessment of the sighting system quite interesting. I'm a former officer of the Bundeswehr and have never encountered those drift issues during my time in the service, never even heard of that. What I've seen many times though, is people shooting the wrong targets on the range. Just because of that extemly narrow FOV. I still find, that it's time for a bigger update, the HK 433, was talked about, but I think they scrapped the program.

Sights,..okay these are on today's standard not good. Handling?...light weapon fully ambidextrous, easy fire selector, nearly foolproof. Accuracy? probably problems with the optics,..the system itself is accurate. Maybe he had an old one like you suggest or maybe he is not as good with a rifle like he thought.

Red dot is fine when you get used to it. Red dot sight has automatic brightness adjustment. It has light sensor in front-right side of red dot. Pushing on/off knob deactivates automatic adjustment and set if for 100% for 30 secs, so you don't need to hold it all the time in bright light :)

I would love to see the look on whoever is in charge's face, possibly a whole committee, when some day they see this video of simple backyard Yanks, in their eyes, figuring out their unsolvable mess that forced them to reissue a new infantry rifle. If the fix is that simple it's no wonder they tried covering it up blaming the integrity of the polymers used, saying it was too far ahead of it's time. lol And you can bet that even if HK did figure out the cause they weren't going to say anything leaving them liable for the fix. I can't wait until all of those G36 parts kits start showing up here. That should bring down the price a bit so the average "Joe" can afford one without a second mortgage. I've always been of the mind that this was one of the most advanced designs fielded

Karl, wait until you take part the 3x optic portion, and realized how it is mounted. The optic tube is soft mounted using rubber grommets, and "tensioned" into position by the height and windage adjustment screws. Not very rigid and prone to movement as the grommet shifts.

For nowadays the optics are outdated that's true, but for the time it was developed it was pretty progressive. Exept for the Steyer AUG, SA80 and C7 almost every other service rifle had iron sights only and none of them had red dot sights. Most people didn't even know what a red dot is at the time.

In the world of Arma and virtual play, this optic will shock you the first time you use it. Unlike the real world, the zero is set and stays set at the 200m, but as you usually engage at that range anyway it isn't a problem. But the loss of peripheral vision on the other hand will make the G36 drastically different compared other weapons and optics systems. However if you worked with the SVD sight, the G36' optics help will make you a lethal killer in no time, as unlike other optics it takes the guessing game of where to aim and get the lead right, out of the picture. So for that, the Arma version of the rifle, I did fall in love with, still the shock of getting the gun's sights does make me pick other rifles over it when I can.

Based on my, addmittedly, very brief 9 months in the Luftwaffe in late 2000s, the biggest complaints with the sight were: 1) the red dot washing out in bright sun 2) the non-illuminated 3x sight. Not ideal trying to hit targets against a dark backdrop, e.g. a forest. 3) most sights shifted their zero by 2 meters if you looked at them funny. It was bad enough that instructors would collect a number of rifles from conscripts and zero'd them properly. Everyone then shot with those rifles and most guys had very trouble hitting targets at 300m with very little training. It was very different when guys were shooting with their own rifles after a march😃.

The removal of the red dot and replacing it with a broader FOV red dot would really benefit the platform.. There’s a reason they are transitioning to picatinny rails, and having used the optic I can’t stress enough how bad the red dot feels. The 3x also benefits from mild loctite around the adjustment screws after zeroing.

I have just read a german field manual, published by the Reservistenverband and it litterally says, that through intense battle stress, the optics of weaponry might shift, and that the zero will get lost that way. The solider is supposed to observe his shots in order to find is new zero. If that is not possible because of the terrain, he is supposed to shoot low, into the ground infront of the target and thereby find his zero. Then he can shoot at the target again. ... It seems to be a normal issue wich is known in the german military. The G36 specifically isnt mentioned in that extract of the manual, wich means, that this is a general advice for all Soliders, equippen with any weapon.

Yes the field of view with both scopes is kinda bad on its own, BUT you have to note that we (iam a german soldier myself) are trained to shoot with both eyes open to compensate the FOV of the Optics itself (even with pistols or MGs). And this is often forgotten or not known to many G36 "Reviewers" out there. Also we use Scopes like EOTechs on the newer G36-plattforms, like A2 or A3. And the thing with the "blue-ish" Red Dot is often with the "old" G36, the newer ones with the Hensoldt optic dont have that.

That you zeroed the red dot to 50m is very interessting. If you zero the rifle, like the Bundeswehr wants it, you have to aim high in close combat. When you zero the rifle, there is a side in the handbook, which you can copy on plastic foil. It helps to adjust the rifle much easier.

If I remember correctly our instructors warned us about the sight losing zero, possibly when the rifle is bumped etc. so I do believe you are right. I had the fortune of always shooting zeroed G36s, but some of my friends who had gone to the Heer had to actually keep track and learn their points of impact on their personal weapons. Although I have to admit, I don't remember the sight picture on the 3x being that poor. Then again, that was twelve years ago,...

Only ever looked at pictures or video, but I'd never appreciated before how narrow the red-dot is, because it sits inside a much larger and noticeably recessed cylindrical area that at a quick glance you assume is the width of the optics, but where the sight tube is only about a third of the actual diameter. Okay, the non-optical internals have to fit somewhere*, but it makes me wonder if the sight was subject to some value-engineering during development and ended up with a much smaller red-dot than was initially intended. * OTOH the battery and controls are outside that cylinder, so maybe not.

Pretty much my experience with this optic in the german army. My rifle was fine, zeroed well. Then it randomly lost zero. Had to aim way off target to hit. Then it fell over at some point because dumb recruit stuff happened and it was perfectly zeroed again. There are weeks between these incidents. It may have to do with flexing, or with the way they zero the sight, it's essentially one spring off 45° angle and two hex screws pushing in against it on flat surfaces on the scope. And yes, modern versions of the G-36s being issued just have rails, for way better optics. It was a nice idea in the 90ies to give everyone "modern" optics instead of iron sights...but 30 year old optics that need to be built into a rifle don't have to be the best solution nowadays. One thing to mention is that the holes in the carry handle are specifically to mount a NVG scope attachment that would slide a periscope down infront of the regular scope, then mount a massive night vision optic on the top...so even more weight. Luckily, the modularity of the G-36 means you can remove the top handle with the optic, and just bolt on several options of railed top pieces available, from either the standard G-36C rail, or the improved, aluminium "KSK" rail, that is slightly higher and flush on the bottom to interfere less with operating the charging handle.

Hi, it`s nice that an american is testing german army rifles. It`s pretty intresting to hear an other opinion about it. I was 10 years drill instructor in the german army and the last 5 years I was a shooting instructor, so I know this rifle quite good. The problem u had with the optic is really intrsting, cause I never had it this extrem. The optic was out of target mostly wenn the recruits ditched the rifle or smacked it against what ever the could find. It is not the most modern optic, but I think it is a very good one when u keep in mind that every soldier in the german army has this one, special or specialized forces got better but this is usual. It does its job in the entire 10 years I used it. You get used to the sight if u practise al lot. And if u lokk at the task it was designed for it is still very good. The german soldier should be able to shoot at a mostly large distance (300-400m main sooting distance) and for that, the scope is very good. The reddot is for close combat and with the "new" shooting training in the german army, every soldier is/should be trained to shoot a target in 50m in a time of 3seconds (body hit). So I think mainly it is for a normal soldier who has enough practice a good and useful sight. Sry for the misspelling and horrible grammar, I´m still german. ;) Thank you very much for your videos it is a pleasure to view you.

The optic may be bad by modern standards. I served with the G3 and shot the G36 as a reserve soldier a couple of times. On these days at the shooting range they had 4 rifles and people were shooting all day with these 4 rifles. I am not aware that one of these rifles couldn't hold zero. And compared to classic H&K irons even a relatively bad optic is a big advantage, especially for fast shooting and/or soldiers doing just a brief military service and don't getting a lot of trigger time in their basic training. Don't forget: It is a gun for all troops. 90% of these soldiers are no infantry. They carry primarely for self defence. If you educate people who never fired a gun before in a brief basic military training the results with that optic are much better than with iron sights. So the concept is valid, I experienced it myself.

i did shoot the G36 in 2000 and 2001 during my army duty. i never experienced my rifle going out of zero. but i never shot so many rounds and i had a new rifle with less than 2000 rounds put through it. i also hd no issues in using the red dot with both eyes open. yes the optic is very small but i had no problems putting my eye very close to the optic. i also did not experience any problems with it while wearing eye glases and helmet. i think my score was around 90/100 after 4 or 5 training sessions. in the video I had the impression that die 3x magnification optic was damaged since it had a color shift and was washed out. maybe it's a matter of age and the mentioned problem with the polymer based connection.

I served as a paratrooper in the Bundeswehr when this rifle and optic entered service. Of course this optic sucks by todays standards. But people forget that the Bundeswehr was an army of conscripts back then. And the duration of the service was cut from 12 to 10 months and later even more. The aim was to reduce the time and cost necessary to teach a civilian how to shoot a rifle and hitting a target. But even as an infantry soldier you need to acquire more skills than just shooting a rifle. So time to train the young soldiers on the rifle was very limited. To have a cheap optic on every standard rifle sure helped to reach that goal. Shooting the G3, the predecessor of the G36, actually required quite some training (=time) to be effective. Besides that i never had any issue with these optics holding zero. I doubt that this is the reason of its aledged accuracy issues. I have yet to meet a German soldier who can confirm the severe issues the G36 is claimed to have...

This actually makes me tempted to pick up a T36 from Tommybuilt with the provisions for more modern sights... I had an HK SL8 before, I thought the issue with its accuracy was more the rifle (shortly after I acquired the rifle, the rumors about heat were starting to come about) but in hindsight, it most certainly was that dual optic. Struggled to get it zeroed and it seemed to wander after a mag or two, very similar to your experience.

In Basic Training in 2004 the rule was: Carry it at the sight rail or let the sight get any kind of knock, like the rifle is rested against something and someone stumbles over it.... whatever... one of the instructors would tell you: Congratulations! Say good bye to yout old zero and hello to the new one. However I can not tell how much of it is true. You expend more ammo on a single run than I did in my entire service.
