In this video you can hear my rendition of Gabriel Fauré's “La Mort de Mélisande”, the fourth and last movement from the orchestral suite Pelléas & Mélisande played on my Hauptwerk organ. It is played on the sample set of Caen - St. Etienne, made by Sonus Paradisi.
Gabriel Faure wrote "Pelléas and Mélisande" for orchestra but french organist Louis Robilliard arranged it to be played for organ solo. Louis Robilliard dedicated the organ arrangement to @ThomasOspital , Organist Titulaire at Saint Eustache, Paris.
In the year 1892 Belgian poet Maurice Maeterlinck published his symbolistic play “Pelléas og Mélisande” which quickly became very popular. Gabriel Fauré was the first composer to set it into music but soon Debussy and Schönberg followed with their own interpretation of the play.
In the world opera a lot of young couple never get each other in the end (except with Mozart). In Pelléas et Mélisande it ends tragically as well.
