Some notes on the lecture - Hope is what connects us to the ontological mystery. - Mystery and hope are tied together. - Hope is a mystery which touches upon all other mysteries. - Hope consists in asserting or affirming (not just a feeling, rather a willing). - at the heart of being, beyond all data, there is something MORE (principle with agency that can relate to us). - it cannot but will what I will. This sounds magical, but it’s not some type of new age law of attraction type nonsense. - Will is something continual, committed, and persistent. - We will with our whole being. - What we will is not always worth willing. -There are conditions. E. G, to hope for the recovery of a dying loved one. Here, we assert that reality is with us in willing for love to be stronger than death. - This is not wishful thinking, it is an affirmation of what IS. - genuine hope is based on something that does not rely on us alone. It’s wellspring is humility not pride. We recognize that our agency is limited- it exists but it is not all powerful. - Hope is not passive resignation. - Hope is active, action is an expression of hope. - Hope is thus a matter of will that connects the will to something beyond itself. - It refuses to calculate probabilities and remains open to possibilities. - we need to be careful with what we devote our hope toward. -Hope is at the center of the ontological mystery.

Patreon Sponsor's Hyper Link ... 0:48 3:58 "a mysterious principle in connivance" 8:42 "willed by whole being" 12:10 "prophetic resonance of genuine hope" Humility and knowing who you are and where you fit in. 15:50 "ontologically, moral quietism?" Will does not stop to consider possibility. 16:59 "hope is a matter of willing not desire" Hmm. Hmm. Desire is affected by the fears generated by our calculations, no?

Gabriel Marcel's theories prevent human from living in the way desperation. He is against Albert Camus, who advocates desperation is everything human possess. I expect more from him so I still read a lot from his works.

So one has a will, and a motive of that will, but the thread that ties the idea of that will attaining its wanted mode of being seems to be hope. Without hope, the motive seems to be lost on any idea of what the will's result may create in fruition. Hope defines the state of being that experiences the apprehension that the will wants something that can be obtained and correct for the bearer of that will. Just my take that maybe be not so much an assertion as is the observance of the will temporally in hopes that the end result of my will achieve the experience of its objective. Cool lecture.

In my many years of teaching students, I've never found one who really didn't understand "anything" of something. One always understands some parts. Start from those things you do understand, and see what you can develop out of those

One wonders if Han Solo could be characterized as a kind of Marcelian hero given his motto, “Never tell me the odds.”

8:53 is the term that Anselm of Canterbury coined 'Para vella'? The closed captioning shows that but a quick search brings up nothing....FM Any recommendations for some goodstuff related to personalism? My interest spiked w the concept of a coming to 'communion' in better percieving each other's subjectivity, something I've been guilty of not practicing in an increasingly dare I say 'weaponized identitarian environment' (a bit dramatic maybe) I 'feel' at first that such an environment seems to deny the right for this communion to exist and to continually propogate the seperation to these 'identities', but no doubt this denial on both sides leaves open a wide space to easily (ha) end this sorry state of affairs with a healthy dash of this personalism through a sharing of communion in our own subjective identities while not completely anhialating the 'identity'. Such personalism at least from where I'm sitting can't be found in mass technological society can it? ... I could blab on about strengthening this is it a kind of individualism? to combat this mass hysteria... Really I just want to know how to spell that Latin work 'Para vella' is it you say a kind of willing to will? A good place to start I think ha ah I only find myself thinking this way at night, I'm really just using/creating a mold but think it's a mould we are in great need of moto domo, 'para vella'?

Thank you for this video Dr. Sadler. Is there overlap between Marcel’s Hope and Aristotle’s Rational Wish (Boulesis)? I suggest this because boulesis is prior to deliberation, aimed at the truly good, and required for rational action. What are your thoughts, Dr. Sadler?

I cant answer your question, but would just point out that it seems like for Marcel hope is tied to his idea that humans are 'homo viator', man on a pilgrimage.
