Rebuilt my 2500HD rear end (Bad pinion bearing) and upgraded from 4:10 to 4:56. With 34.85 inch tire (for increased payload) stock 4:10 dropped to 3.74. The 4:56 brought it back to 4:10 ratio using bigger tires. More importantly climbs used less rpm. Setting the pattern and backlash was the hardest repair I’ve made.

A good way to get the carrier beating preload correct is to measure the shims that you take out when you remove the diff. Then when you re install the shims, just make sure that the total shim thickness adds up the same as the ones you took out.

In my experience the pinion shim is dictated by the housing and not the gear set. By that I mean I the variance in machining of the diff housing to diff housing is far more than gear set to gear set. If the original gear set had a good contact patch and didn't howl I always reuse the original pinion shim. I've also tried the setup bearing technique and it's a waste of time. You are determining gear setup based on bearings you won't actually be using and it just increases the chances of issues. Play with your side bearing shims as needed to get your desired backlash and preload but as far as the pinion shim goes I always reuse the stock shim as I feel it's matched to the machining of the diff housing itself.

One trick I would use is to use a prybar to give the carrier a load (both drive and coast) for the best pattern replication in the marking compound. Free spinning gave incorrect marks. There is always a load there anyways. Replicate for the true load. Also most Fords (what I learned on) were the same as far as pinion depth. 90% still like the .030" pinion shim from factory.

Well done LT! Great info as always. I did the same change in a 2002 4.8 2wd Silverado and loved the result. Milage was actually better. Less peddle to come up to speed for city driving. Higher rpm at high-speed keeps you from flying down the highway. Works for me anyway... I like having the power for short bursts and nothing good comes from sustained 90 mph if not on a track. I did have some gear noise, but it disappeared after a few hundred miles. Not sure if my "good enough" install was the cause or all new gear sets make some noise until they wear in. (I did install and take apart multiple times trying for perfection) Topped off the dif oil after driving for a bit with some Lucas and I'll never know what stopped the slight noise. Thx!

I did this in an untouched BOP rear. Went from like a 2:56 to a 3.73. What a difference lol. But getting everything set was a pain. I was told the pinion bearing shims are standard to case, not gear set. So if you measure the factory shim behind the pinion bearing, it'll be really close to what you need to set it at. I couldn't get mine out... been together for 54 years and my press just wasn't having it. However friends who have done it have said that works for setup. But what a pain in the ass. No matter what I tried I just couldn't get a great pattern. I eventually did but it took forever. I also overshot the pinion preload but then looking around I was under the factory spec. The consensus again was with good bearings, higher preload was fine. It's survived many passes and like a thousand miles with no noises so I may be good lol.

So, the 4x4 shop where I had my '12 Ram 1500 2wd regeared from 3.55 to 4.10 said Nitros, which I also chose, are notorious for noise. He runs into mild noise a lot with them, even when contact pattern is "perfect". His theory is that the alloy they spec is responsible as, in his experience, they don't chip as easily as some others. Mine makes a bit of noise even though he took pics of the set up and they are picture perfect. My recommendation? Turn up the stereo! :) PS Amsoil 75W-140, (specd), a dash of straight 190 and tiny tube of Liqui Moly MoS2 helped quite a bit.

I hope you have enough carrier bearing preload. I know you made mention of carrier bearing preload but in the video it seems like the carrier fell into the housing a little too easy. Hence why a case spreader was created.. Years of setting up diffs have proven to me having proper carrier bearing preload is crucial for strength. If you don't have enough preload you get too much deflection under load. Also the carrier bearing preload is indeed measurable. Just like the drag you measure in inch pounds on the pinion preload you can get a total once the carrier is installed.
@LawrenceTolman
2 жыл бұрын
good catch! although the footage I had shown on there was not the final install, I actually had the carrier in and out many times to set backlash and didn't record every single time. on the final install, it was quite a bit tighter.

You are so right about carrier bearing pre load. It affects backlash also if loose because of spreading force on diff. Gears. Floating carrier =no good, worn bearings and undercut cups on bearing shells. Old timers like me used to use a fish spring scale with a.hook to pull carrier and get ounces of turning torque. Inch pound torque wrench now. Ignore breakaway higher torque reading and go with slow and steady turning of wrench for dynamic turning torque. If you do it for a living you can't have comebacks! Flat rate considers comebacks free work. Too many and they show you the door. Doing it right is still easy it takes some verification steps, but soon you have a reputation as the guy to see on differentials!

Torque due to crush washer on pinion and locktite on nut was 245ft lbs set pinion slightly deeper than normal due to nitrous preload gears and carrier from 2 to 3 change factory had cast iron shims new ones steel used calipers and micrometer to make left right adjustments to shim packs verify pattern with lithium grease and backlash with dial guage. Slight howl on deceleration but car went over 160mph with me and 3 other people in it safely. Car avg on Highway was 19mpg. Sold to goto College as Holley Double pumper around town mpg 9-12.

A 4.11:1 final drive gear ratio on both front and rear axles would have been a better choice because it can handle a turbocharged engine setup just fine and your MPG is still reasonable given the fact you have a 4 speed transmission but if you had a 6 or 8 or even a 10 speed transmission then it would be a different story then you can run a 4.30:1 final drive gear ratio on both front and rear axles with no problems.
@LawrenceTolman
2 жыл бұрын
fair point! in fact, the silverado SS from the same era uses a 4.10 ratio, but going from a 4.10 to 4.30 is only about a 5% difference which will be negligible at the end of the day (in my humble opinion)

Something about the left page of that pattern book looked wrong. Was it also for unacceptable patterns? A contact patch too close to any edge with little contact deeper into the gear set is WRONG. The full contact pattern needs to be near the middle of the gear surface and away from the edges to avoid snapping the edges off, leading and trailing contact is ok on the edges but not driving contact.

I would like to know what are the choices for the front axle of these GM trucks. I have a 02 Tahoe 4x4 with 3.73s with true trax, mild go fast stuff maybe +30hp. I'm running 33" tires. I go off road some, but I'm not hard on it, I'm not rock crawling, "Fins and Things" trail in Moab is limit. I like the quiet 2000 RPM at 70 mph cruise. Anyways, I was thinking to change to 4.10s, but thought while I'm at it I should put in a front axle that is a bit stronger. What do think?
@LawrenceTolman
2 жыл бұрын
with a tahoe, there aren't a lot of easy axle upgrades, but the one that will be a direct swap on the back (from what I understand) is the 14 bolt semi floater 9.5" axle that came in some escalades. not sure on the years, but they were stronger than the 8.6 10 bolt and should be a direct bolt in with your suspension (you'll need to double check this though). as far as the front 8.25" IFS, not sure if there are any drop in IFS axles that are stronger.

in theory, yes. as long as you are only changing the carrier all you have to do is check backlash since the ring gear is concentric with the axle tubes won't move front or back, only side to side. I'm starting to think that with all this extra work I might as well just get only the housing from the junkyard and go brand new on the gearset and LSD carrier, but IDK if I'm going to stay stock power and stock trans for a while (therefore able to take advantage of the ratio change) or if I'm gonna buy "everything" at once and be 300-500 wheel and needing to gear up (numerically lower) so I'm not revving the piss for no reason. Not to mention I'm still not sure if I wanna do a street build on ~27" tires, or a "rally" build on ~29 inch tires. Guess I kinda need to figure it all out and build it as a package ONCE, and RIGHT, huh?

If you change the ratio, would this affect the towing capacity?

The lower gear ratio is better for towing. Somehow, I don't think that was why he did the work though... lol.

technically it won't make the truck tow more weight than its rated for, but it will definitely handle the weight better. Although Jim is correct, that was not my intention, and I'll probably never tow myself, but yes, 4.30 would be a great gear for towing or to offset larger tires.

What’s the mpg you’re getting with the cam? I have a cammed 4.8 as well and wondering your getting for mpg. Granted I still have factory cats and manifold with just a straight pipe.

Ok its together . Cool now its time to strengthen that rear end considerably . Carefully- Take the crush sleeve out and measure its length and id . Now using some good chrome moly tubeing or round stock make yourself a heavy walled crush-proof spacer to put back in there . Set up like this that ring and pinnion will take some high horsepower ABUSE !!! Works GOOD !!!
