There's no rush to complete anything, I'm happy to wait as long as it takes. Yours is one of those layouts that keeps on inspiring. ps. I was sweating while watching.

Hi Gary, thank you for the kind comments. It is a long game I’m playing but it does get frustrating sometimes when all you want to do is play and model trains. :-/. Paul

hi Paul... great update..i use code 55 track on my layout & at one point i had the same situation as you except my rail separated from the ties... keep up the good work.. vinny

Hey Vinny, thanks mate. I think I’ve got away lightly. The track should hopefully be repairable with a little shaving at the join, your experience sounded much more fatal for that piece of track. Paul

I've never seen track buckle that much before! Good video, I'll check out some of your others

Hi Robert, it seems to have been a common occurrence on many layouts this summer, I’m just glad it happened now and not once ballasting had been completed. Paul

I would recommend the Cobalt motors Paul, easy to fit & only three wires. They are expensive but if you can buy a six or 12 pack you will save quite a bit.

Thanks for the recommendation Grant, the appeal of only three wires is a huge one as is the dcc option. I think I’m already sold on them even before fitting! Paul

Hi Paul, progress is progress even in this heat. like the platform edge's. I have notice on a length of flexi track which around 900mm it expands to nearly 3.5mm extra 1.75 mm either side if its joined to another length of track. most of the gaps I have between the rails have closed hate to thin what would happen if it gets any hotter to the fixed rails that has already been ballast. great update take care and enjoy the weather.....Tony

Hi Tony, that’s an interesting observation, let’s hope it doesn’t get any warmer or there’ll be track pinging off all over the place. Paul

Hi Paul, great to catch the distorted rails before the scenery around it was done, as for the Cobalt point motors I have these throughout my layout and they are great. One small point though, it’s a trade off between the sound of the motor running and the clunk of the peco solenoids. Tortoise motors are quieter but they are not DCC. The fact that the Cobalt are DCC made me choose them giving me the chance to control via my Z21 or a Cobalt Alpha mimic panel which is a future project. Regards, Geoff.

Thanks for the feedback Geoff. I’ve seen both the tortoise and cobalt operate and both still have a certain amount of sound coming off of them but as you say, the dcc inclusion on the cobalts makes it the winner. The z21 is a long term goal for the layout and the cobalts would compliment the system well. Paul

Hi Paul Still an interesting update and clearly you were suffering in the loft lol no wonder it was shorter than normal in this heat. I had exactly the same issues with my track when my layout was in my loft, youve done okay to only have such a small section kink and as you say better now before you got that areas scenery done. Hope to see how youve progressed with the platforms next time. Cheers Paul

Paul, it was horrendous up there. I couldn’t have been more than fifteen minutes recording and it’s no exaggeration to say I was dripping wet! In fact, the heat was so much the phone brought up a warning that it couldn’t record anymore due to overheating. Paul

Like the platform arrangement mate. Shame about the heat getting into the track. Had it happen myself in the past and know how frustrating it is.

Hi Paul, The embankment looks like it has a nice flow to it, It should look great when you have added the road surface and some grass etc. I was thinking of doing the same thing with the platform walls myself, Maybe with foamex so it can be scribed, not sure yet but I certainly look forward to seeing how you build your platforms. It's annoying with the track buckling but at least you caught it early! I actually glued all my trackwork down that I have done last weekend before the heatwave hit.. The thing with point motors is to just buy them a few at a time, Even using megapoints with cheap servo's it still ends up quite expensive so I just buy some boards now and then so it doesn't feel so bad lol. Which cobalt is it? The classic, analogue or digital? Cheers, Michael

Hi Michael, I’ve dabbled with foam board in the past but can’t quite get that scribing right. The plasticard is my friend and I do like to create things from scratch. I pinned all the track this time as I was getting minor distortions previously so wanted something more rigid although I will remove the pins once ballasting is completed. You are right about the motors, I was lucky when I received a whole batch of Peco motors free from another modeller, even they would have been expensive, relatively speaking, if I’d been buying all the components. The cobalt is the dcc version so I suppose when you break it down it’s not that expensive. How’s that trackwork of your going? You still building at it? Paul

Paul It a bit of experience from a silly old bald geezer who lives down under. I use peco track ann iii simply leave expansion gaps every yard. I use a 5 cent coin as a fap. My layout is in the garden and during the summer 40 degrees is common in fact last summer we had one day of 47C and no track buckled. In my roof space it can get to over 65 degrees or more . Guess what, Im. Not putting a railway in the attic. What i want is a cellar for the railway and also beer and wine. I would never leave the place Lol.

Thanks for the feedback Steve. The weather here is more of an exception to the norm, 23 years since temperatures climbed this high but the layout should be built to withstand all weathers. Once things cool down a bit and you’ve sent over some coins I’ll correct the issue with the track. Throw in some of that beer and wine you’re storing too! Paul
