A lot of abusive people are charismatic, or sometimes nice - in order to attract other people to use and abuse, and to increase their power. I think we needed a few more scenes of Sandor being a little nicer, more charming, to Joe in order to get a better understanding of how types like Sandor sprinkle in some charm along with the nasty, controlling behavior.

@@SY-ok2dqExactly. Abusive people love bombing to reel someone in is really common. Then the abuse & gaslighting start. As a teacher I've even seen teens do that in same sex friendships. Its distressing. But usually it's a very charming teen who has a coterie of admirers both in their peer group & staff: & staff arent interested in emotional abuse .

Way back in the 80s, my English teacher took my class to see a Royal Shakespeare Company touring performance of The Merchant of Venice. Paul Rhys played Lorenzo, and he was magnificent. I've been obsessed with his work ever since. I've never seen this before, and as Michael Sheen is another favourite, I'm in for a treat. Thanks for the upload.

This is an absolutely brilliant story I read the novel back in the 1990s. After watching the television production I've watched it loads of time since I love everything about it. The gallowglass being the servant.,. The lady stole it from me on st gallowglasses Eve. I'm a massive fan of Paul Rhys like yourself. I haven't seen him in theatre yet but I'm hoping to. I think Michael sheen and him work really well together. The apparently doing a play about gallowglasses recently I didn't thought.

Saw him at the National in The Invention of Love. He was, of course, brilliant. He doesn't get much that's particularly interesting in film or telly. Just formulaic bad guys. But this is Barbara Vine's writing. So NOT formulaic. One of my favourite books is by her. A Dark Adapted Eye. It was made into a telly 2 parter. But was butchered and had a Helena Bonham Carter who was far far over her head, and didn't know what to do in her role. Though Celia Imre and Sophie Ward and Steven Mackintosh were all superb.

The Welch born actor Marten Sheen was 24 when this movie was made in 1993. Now 50 (2019), he has made almost a full-time career playing real people - British Prime Minister Tony Blair (3 movies - 2003, 2006 and 2010), famous interviewer David Frost, famous gay comedian Kenneth Williams and controversial football manager Brian Clough. In more recent years he has appeared in all 24 episodes of the TV mini-series Masters of Sex (2012 - 2016), seven episodes of The Good Flight (2019) and six episodes of Good Omens (2019). His early career was mainly in the theatre. One fun fact: he was the voice of a character in The Simpsons.

Apparently this was Michael Sheen's first screen role. I believe he first appeared on my radar in either "Wilde" (1997) playing Robbie Ross or his role in "Bright Young Things" (2003). This was also one of Paul Rhys's earlier films, produced just as his career was really taking off and he was being cast in leading roles. Both men came of age during that wonderful era of British film and television when so many great Merchant & Ivory film productions were being made and released.

Every 90s UK TV production I've seen with Arkie Whiteley she looks completely different to her early film and TV roles in Prisoner, Mad Max 2 and Razorback. It's difficult to tell that it's the same person. I know she was in her late teens during the early stuff so it might just be the passage of time but still. Maybe she had work done but I just always find it strange. That and the put on English accent doesn't help.
@SY-ok2dq
2 жыл бұрын
You're right, Whiteley does look quite different in this to how she did in her young roles. I think it's the surgery, and some fat loss from her face. You can definitely see that her nose was done. Her looks seem to have come from her mother, Wendy. Whiteley was based in London during this period of her life, and I think she was actually born there. I suppose she would have needed to use an English accent to land this role and other roles in the U.K.
