I set out to test the common hook brands that we find and use here in Thailand to see what was the strongest. I wanted to test just the tip of the hook / before the barb to see what hook was strongest in this area as I have lost a few fish where the tip of the hook has broken off. This tends to happen much more frequently when predator fishing. Generally speaking, predator fish have harder mouths with teeth, bones or abrasive pads and it is these hard mouth features that prevent the hook from setting completely to the bend. If the hook is not set well and only the tip has penetrated, then all the fighting force is being placed on only the tip before the barb and this is when you will likely break the tip of the hook off or bend the hook out.
So, with all this in mind I made a rig to test the tip strength of the hooks and see for myself what hook held up to this type of abuse the best. Many of the hooks I tested where average with a few clear winners and losers. I decided to separate the hook results in to 5 groups to try and make sense of the results. Group 5 the worst hooks, group 4 the lower average hooks, group 3 the middle hooks, group 2 the higher average and lastly group 1 the best of the hooks tested. There were a few surprises along the way especially finding that one of the cheapest hooks was the strongest beating out Gamakatsu, Owner and Mustad. Mustad was another surprise to see that one of the thickest hooks from a well known brand was very inconsistent.
