Yeah I know what you mean, PS1 is a beautiful looking game, you can tell the team that made it put a lot of heart into it, it's got so much charm. The soundtrack is also very nice, better than FF1 for sure. The remixed dungeon tracks from it in PS4 are my favourite songs in PS4, especially the one that plays in the tower where you get the psycho wand, good god they perfected it in that, no other arrangement has done it justice like that since.

Oh, hell no! I have to strongly make a stand here. I like both Gunstar and the Japanese version of Contra HC, but Gunstar is just a more fun, well-rounded and original game, with awesome attention to detail that you won't find in many other games. Ever notice how the boss patterns and tranformations change each time you play? Never seen this in a game before. The Dice Maze and the shooter stage add nice variety to the game and we both very well done. Nearly everything about this game is perfect. The difficulty levels are even all perfectly-balanced, with easy actually being easy and hard being hard. I also loves how simply touching the enemy doesn't do damage and there's an element of melee combat involved. The US version of Contra is a gimped exercise in frustration difficulty-wise too. The Japanese one is much better though. I also have to disagree about Contra's music. Very weird and excellent techno/industrial soundtrack. Gunstar is on overall better game though. Most reviewers seem to agree with me on this.

I would love to see a hack of Hyperstone Heist putting in the screen-throw effect. I'm sure the genesis can handle that. While at it, that black bar behind the status info is not necessary either, but rather a sign the developers were in a rush. A similar black bar was in early screen shots of SF2: Special Champion Edition, but gone in the actual release.

Fun episode as always. Great work, Joe. Dave...you did stuff too.(I kid, I kid. You do great work too). I was just thinking of game battles as I played Rad Racer and Out Run this week, as well as Tiny Toon Adventures for NES and Genesis. Good to see it pointed out that throwing foot soldiers at the screen is not mode 7. That misconception is way too widespread. Versions of that effect can be seen on other systems. It was quite common. As for the Turtles games, I agree with the analysis. I'd pick Turtles in Time as the better effort (effort is what's lacking in the Genesis game), but I still prefer playing Hyperstone for the run button(so much better) and the music. I much prefer the FM synth here, and it sounds a lot more like the arcade which also used FM. The turtles do have extra frames of animation in Hyperstone, but then Turtles in Time has a lot more unique sprites, with more foot soldiers and bosses. As for the voices, I don't think they're so hot in either version. On Genesis, they're bright but very scratchy. For SNES, they're smooth but very muffled and sometimes cut off.

I love Hyperstone Heist. Never understood when people said it was a "clone" or "ripoff" of Turtles in Time. How can it be a "ripoff" if they're both made by Konami??? It has remixed/combined stages and asset's from BOTH the '89 Arcade game and Turtles in Time, as well as exclusive new sections to coincide with it's new story. It's an amalgamation of familiar and new. I remember I had played T.I.T 1st when I was younger (it was released before Hyperstone Heist) and then when Hyperstone Heist was released I had gotten it for my birthday. Even back then when playing Hyperstone Heist I distinctly remember saying to myself "Wow this is pretty cool!" "It's a mix of the '89 Arcade game and T.I.T but NOT EXACTLY the same as them". The graphics are darker then T.I.T but the turtles (as well as every other character) look sharper and smoother due to them having more frames of animation. The enemy A.I. is also a bit tougher which I like. People also complain about it only having 5 stages while T.I.T has 10, but the stages in Hyperstone Heist are much longer with each stage having 3 sections each. When comparing the 2 games they both take just about the same amount of time to finish. Tatsu being an exclusive boss is pretty kick ass as well. My ONLY complaints with Hyperstone Heist are that they definitely could have thrown in more bosses instead of repeating the previously defeated bosses in the Gauntlet stage. For the Gauntlet stage they could have thrown in a number of villains such as Bebop (still baffles me as to why he was omitted), Tokka, Rahzar, Karai or even Groundchuck, Dirtbag, Wingnut and Screwloose would have been awesome. Also the Gauntlet stage and stage 2-3 (the cave where you fight Rocksteady) are exactly the same just a different color background. Other then those 2 things, I love it just about the same as Turtles in Time.
@yohkom.7988

Both are equally as good IMO, Turtles in Time is overrated but still a very fun game while it's obvious that Konami weren't at their full with Hyperstone Heist but it still manages to be a good beat 'em up as well. Konami started to make proper use of the Mega Drive hardware with Rocket Knight Adventures and then Castlevania Bloodlines and then Contra Hard Corps. Though Bloodlines, as great as it is, could have been a bit more polished and on a bigger than 8 meg cart. I mean, we're in 1994 at this point and the first 8 meg Mega Drive cartridge was Strider, 4 years before! Imagine Bloodlines on a 16 meg cart? Or on Mega-CD? I already consider Bloodlines the best 16-bit Castlevania along with Akumajō Dracula on X68000 so clearly a 16 meg Bloodlines with tweaked development could have been the single best Castlevania ever! ^^
@yohkom.7988
7 жыл бұрын
Turtles in Time was overrated by magazines and thus many people thought the same. It's clearly an excellent beat 'em up but it's not "one of the best games ever" as some magazines tended to claim. About Hard Corps, ye, it's 16 meg. Konami did a few others 12 or 16 meg Mega Drive games: -Hyper Dunk The Playoff Edition -International Superstar Soccer Deluxe -Lethal Enforcers -Lethal Enforcers II Gunstar Heroes is more polished (and more original) than Contra Hard Corps but both are equally awesome IMO!

I'm another sucker who fell for the hype of Turtles in Time. It's a decent beat em up but it was not worth the $40 I paid for it IMO. I can say the same thing for SCIV, was also $40. Ppl stay on that Snes hype train. I think the best Snes beat em up is actually the more obscure Ninja Warriors. And Hagane destroys SC4.

Guerrilla War is a game I completely forgot about. I remember when I first played it and saw it was SNK my first thought was "So...the development staff was like 'What if Ikari Warriors didn't suck?'" Edit: Also, I don't know why Phantasy Star just doesn't get its due. Long before Final Fantasy had its emotional death with Aeris...Phantasy Star II (1989) had Nei, and Phantasy Star IV (1993) had Alys (not to be confused for Alis from the first game). The difference is that FFVII basically gives away the fact that Aeris isn't long for the world (think about her levelling progression)...but both Nei and (especially) Alys come out of left field. The death of Alys was the first time I ever really felt emotional about a plot element from a game. It is a real heartstring moment. And now...we have a million Final Fantasy games, but the West didn't even get Phantasy Star Online 2...we got screwed out of a good game. I really liked Phantasy Star Universe (especially with the AotI expansion)...but I remember when I kept trying to get my friends to play back in 2007...they had never heard of it. Do yourself a favor and play the classic Phantasy Star quadrilogy and also Phantasy Star Portable 2 for the PSP. Seriously...play them. The original Phantasy Star Online hasn't aged particularly well (mainly the stiff combat), but seriously. Rant over.

I apologize if it seems like I'm spamming with my comments, but wow, Guerilla War! One of my very favorite NES games. I love Commando but it just doesn't compare. Guerilla War is simultaneously easier (infinite continues and grenades) and harder (you need to rescue hostages on the battlefield and in the heat of battle you might accidentally kill them, which deducts points). A blast of a game.

While I know you guys aren't really fans of emulation, given your game library, I think an emulator battle episode would be very interesting. Obviously some systems are in relatively early stages of emulation, but something like "Bsnes vs. SNES9x. vs. ZSNES" would be fun.

The part with 3 games against each other (Talespin) was pretty hardcore. You should do more of that.

All three Tailspins look awful...the Genesis version came out in 1992...think Streets of Rage and Sonic 2...yeah not even close. Can we get Doom vs Doom vs Doom vs Doom vs Doom vs Doom vs Doom(Snes vs 32X vs 3DO vs Jaguar vs Saturn vs PSX vs PC circa 93)?

Hey guys, I love your videos, but what would you think about putting a small graphic showing maybe the name of the game, publisher and possibly developer in the lower-corner while the game footage is playing? I know you always say what the name of the game is as you are going into that segment, but easily distracted people like me may miss it, realize the game looks cool during the footage and then I have to rewind back to see the name and/or who it is by.

Let's be real here, in the purchasing of a tailspin game, there are no winners, only losers with broken controllers.......ah childhood memories.

I thought they debunked the Final Fantasy title reasoning. In an interview, they said they wanted to call it Fighting Fantasy but it was used so they went with Final. Fun video, regardless. Also, SO glad to see Phantasy Star get the praise it deserved. One of my favorite RPGs .

Yes! Phantasy Star! I live in Brazil, where the Master System was as relevant as the NES in north America. That lead me to the Mega-Drive (no Genesis here) instead of a Super Nintendo and shaped the gaming person I am today. BTW, I'll take Phantasy Star IV over any 16-bit Final Fantasy any time!

Had both, loved the Phantasy Star series, but had more nostalgic feelings for FF 2 and 3. Then again, I felt Chrono Trigger topped them all.

These skits are so inspiring. We do a local comedy/variety web show called TRASHburgh and I'm trying very hard to make sure I'm not subconsciously stealing Game Sack skits as I work on new videos.
