That was a really great video, very clear and concise. We are very grateful to you for showing it and are making a lightweight version for a hiking trip to the Outer Hebrides. Thanks.

In Germany the "Bergwacht" (Mountain rescue service) uses the "Gebirgstrage" (mountain stretcher) to rescue people on mountains and other difficult terrain. the Gebirgstrage has handles on both sides and a wheel in the middle under the stretch.

great ideas, nice mono-wheel. since "fatigue" is a major factor on an Elk cart, you could do two simple things to make it easier on you, instead of the wheel all the way to the rear, instead do a 2/3 1/3 split design where you have a smaller "tail" of cargo area behind the wheel, this would allow you to Balance the weight fore and aft of the wheel. And this wouldn't add might add cost and complexity, but you can still keep the cart a mono-wheel but use two tires about 6" apart, this gives you some of the stability of a traditional two wheel cart, as you have a slightly wider foot print, but you still have the features of a mono-wheel, that in combination with the Tail would take probably 50% of the current weight off of your shoulders.

while I still use this kind of cart for light loads, I mostly use the single wheel version that I have another video on, its mostly a bicycle wheel with a ladder sort of frame on top. can be used with one or two people and is about the best ive found.

I have been wanting to build a one wheel design. I like yours quite a bit. I had the idea of making a short rack on the opposite side of the wheel so I could throw some weight to the other side. Maybe that would take some weight off my arms. Hopefully I can get something built before hunting season. Thanks for the ideas.

this one is a good design for lighter weights, but I use my other style most of the time, it is the one where you have a full sized mountian bike wheel and tire and the platform sits on top of it. it gets the load up out of the sagebrush, and the big wheel goes over rocks and trees much easier. kzitem.info/news/bejne/sGyu2YVoh3V9foI

So your saying the KZitem link you showed me in your response you fine that it’s better in the thick wood with mountains with rocks and logs. Just wondering because I’m trying to figure what to build for a cart. I hunt the thick and mountains of the Adirondack mountains in upstate New York I have determined that it needs to be a one tire cart. I have used 2 wheel 4 wheel carts and they just get hung up way too much. I know there not a perfect solution but I really think one tire would be the best solution to make it work. Thanks

Use a walkingtrailer for many years already. Covered over 25000 km with it FB kayak cobber I have solid wheels...big problem with most cars is the bolts are not sufficient. As it's bumping and shaking all the time. I don't have that problem so much. I use a RadicalDesign Wheelie. Always nice to see carts as it's a good alternative for a backpack

C amber thanks!! it was a fun build, not sure I would go the same route the next time, kind of thinking about a round tube design, that telescopes, and possible 3 tubes under the cargo area for the next one

On the new cart you built is that a 20” bike tire and it looks like the other one is 16” just looking to build one and just wondering what size tire to go with thanks

i think it was a 20". I actually have not used that cart in a long time and use this one kzitem.info/news/bejne/sGyu2YVoh3V9foI the wheelbarrow cart is a good cart for more level terrain and not alot of obstacles like fallen trees and rocks. where I hunt most of the time is all hills and over the last 5 years or so we have had alot more deadfall trees due to the pine beetle. so even though that other cart is designed as a 2 man cart, the larger wheel goes over deadfall much easier so its the one I use the most.

Hi what is the measurement outside to outside of your handles. Starting to build and I’m trying to see how far apart I should make the handles and the wheel mounts. And would you change anything. Thanks

while that was a good game cart for lighter loads, this is the game cart style that I use now. it sits much higher so it goes through sagebrush and over downed trees and rocks much easier. I have had 2 mule deer on it by myself a couple of times and it handles better than the wheelbarrow style kzitem.info/news/bejne/jqR9moWnbHV9goY&pp=ygUQZ2FtZSBjYXJ0IGNhbHRvbg%3D%3D

but if you make either, then the distance between the handles that i like is a little over shoulder width apart so you have plenty of side to side leverage.

@@joecalton1449 if you have two people I would say it’s a awesome deer cart . Or have you use yours by yourself. I know on this one you can use a strap that goes over your shoulders and down to each handle bar to take the weight. I’m looking at a 300lb for bear and deer. Just trying to get a direction as to how to build
@joecalton1449

@@joshuagates7231 that other one was designed as a 2 man cart, but if you are by yourself, you shift the center of the load towards yourself a little, and it works good. I have carried 300 pounds or around there comfortably with either one. around here, if you are hunting in the flats then you have sagebrush to go around or through. up in the hills we have alot of deadfall thanks to the beetles, and lots of rocks. so that higher center of gravity, and larger wheel goes over obsticals better. if you are mostly in flat lands without sagebrush, then the wheelborrow style might work well.

Great video. You explained your design decisions very clearly. Have you made any improvements or made a new cart with round tube steel? I do like how the smaller cart has a bend near the axle to lower the center of gravity of the load. Both look better than anything I have found online except maybe the $150 Rackpacker. I'm really curious what brand your small one is since I cant find these for sale. Give us an update.

I don't really use this design all that much anymore. I have another vid showing the 2 man style cart that I use the most, and with good technique, it beats this design pretty well for me and the game I get and my terrain even with one man kzitem.info/news/bejne/jqR9moWnbHV9goY im not sure what brand the smaller cart is, but it was pretty worn by the time that I got it 20 years ago or so. I do still use it occasionally as it breaks down easy and my larger cart doesn't.

Whats the length of the cart, I'd like to make one. Measurements. Joe you should sell a blue print, I'd buy one from you, I sure love the one wheel carts. Those 2 wheel carts tip over on uneven terrain and going over logs. One wheel carts manuver much better in the woods.

I think I made that one around 7-8 foot long, and about shoulder width wide at the end where the handles are. it is a good design, but lately ive been using the taller version more, even though its set up for 2 men, if you shift the weight closer to one set of handles it works pretty good with one man.

Joe, what is the lengths of the square tubing of the main frame work of the small one and larger one? I to had the two wheel game cart from Cabelas or Gander mountain, didnt like it.

+Daniel Bowman for some reason, I had to approve your coment, never seen that before. I think the 2 sections were 4' and 3.5', or they could have both been 4' with 6-8" of overlap where they bolt together in the middle to be able to take it down.

This design is not good because the placement of the wheel puts too much weight on the handles. When I made my cart I designed it so the wheels are right under the middle of the cart, this way all the weight of the deer is on the wheels not the handles. Guarantee this guy will use those carts once and will see what I mean.

could you not just unbolt the angle iron wheel pieces and bolt them on the underside of the front tire, invert the bracket would give you another 3" of clearance. Nice job.

Russell, I suppose you could, but for this style of game cart, the lower you can get the axle and still have enough clearance to get through the vegetation that you normally go through the better. the higher you go, the more I seem to fight the side to side forces as you are traveling.
@garybiggs9010

Russel. Then the balance is all jacked up. The weight slung under the axle is easier to control then over the axle. You can walk & swing a 5 gallon bucket of water by the wire handle. Try to walk & swing the same on the palm of your hand over your head.

Just abit of criticism...sound concept but why would you try to push this thing in front of you...it is lees of a hassle if you hike with it behind you...maybe on the next one you could hook up disc brake...a portable solar system would make huge difference in your hunting experience...
@joecalton1449
9 жыл бұрын
+Lance Forest that doesn't sound like criticism to me, more of a regular ol' question. I have pulled my old one several times. like when climbing a steep slope. or on mostly flat and smooth ground. but most of the time I have more control over the load when I can see it. a disc brake might be nice, it would have more stopping power, but I would think it would cake up with mud a lot quicker than caliper brakes, besides, I had the wheel with caliper brakes in my junk pile so it didn't cost me anything but a few minutes to dig it out. now the portable solar system sounds interesting..........run a couple small panels to charge a battery, or set of battieries in the frame and then run a small motor off the batteries to help with the hills and rough spots.... would have to see if the extra weight for the solar panels, battieries and motor would be justified in the help from the motor.
