Over the years, I have worked on many slate roofs and artificial slate roofs. Good slate roofs last a long time, that is for sure; however, finding the right people who can fit a slate roof correctly these days is extremely hard. Many people now have artificial slates on their roofs because of cost. These artificial slates are normally made from fibre cement, and some of them have texture to make them look really nice, almost as good as real slate. The quality of the artificial slates can vary quite a lot. Some of them are quite strong. However, the majority of them, due to cost, are cheap and flimsy, causing quite a few problems.
Firstly, when installing them, you tend to break a lot of them. They also sustain damage in transit, so a good percentage get thrown away before they even get onto the roof. Secondly, walking over a roof covered with artificial slates that are made out of fibre cement can easily break the slate underfoot, thus requiring replacement. Replacing a slate, especially an artificial one, in a roof is not particularly easy. Another issue with the artificial slates is that their colour changes after around 15 to 20 years, often turning a bit greyish and not looking particularly nice. So, while they are cheaper than real slates, they have many drawbacks.
Recently, we have been using these new plastic or rubber slates that seem to have many good attributes. The only thing is that we don't know exactly what they will look like in 20 to 30 years. However, they look really good, handle well, and are very flexible. You can remove and re-fix them if you need to do repairs on the roof without breaking any. In fact, we found that we did two or three roofs and never broke a single slate. You can walk all over the roof, even in cold weather, without breaking the slate. They are flexible, extremely light, and easy to transport in your vehicle, so they have many advantages. Only time will tell if they are going to be the way to go.
There is a new company on the market now that is making them out of recycled plastic, which seems to be a good thing. Only time will tell whether these will change the market. Speak soon.
