I agree with Kurt about Fate not really be "rules light". Fate's mechanics are definitely aimed directly at the story rather than at any attempt at modeling. It's completely different from a system with 200 grapple rules, for example. But there is still crunch there; it's just story crunch. Fate is at heart a co-operative storytelling game. It's not at all an outgrowth of wargaming, which is why it may be uncomfortable for some people at first.

There are two better alternatives to get informations about Fate Coe than a youtube-clip:: a) read the rules: they are much more easy to understand than a youtube-clip. b) play it as a player Fate Core is a roleplaying system for a special clientele.You have to try it for yourself to decide if it is YOUR system. If you want to have an impression before you´re starting to preparate your participation in Fate, you can download the rules for free! Fate is a system, that deserves your attention.

Loved the review, in addition to being kid friendly Accelerated is also good for quick pickup/one off games or for games where characters all have a roughly equal skill base; paradoxically the simple nature of Accelerated also makes it good for mashup games incorporating multiple genres.

Interesting comment about younger players. You said that you started gaming when you we're about your daughters age in a previous review. Do you think that a more abstract system like this is better to start with as opposed to say something like D&D basic? There is more chart keeping in basic but there are charts to compare numbers and is much more defined system that could be easier to grasp for first time players. I would rather play a more abstract system now and something like basic would be constrictive and clunky, but I do see some merit in the number charts.

I have with speed-reading read all of Fate Core System, Fate Accelerated, Fate System toolkit, dozens of those small, unsatisfying 50-page Worlds booklets each with weird premises, and some of the meatier 400-page 3rd-party game settings. I have played dozens of game sessions. My impressions: *It's innumerate.* Characters seem to be living in a world oblivious to the laws of physics. There are no falling-damage rules. Normally if you fall, the energy of your impact depends directly on height fallen, with a limit due to terminal velocity because of air-resistance. But in Fate the damage you suffer is "subject to the dramatic demands of the story" or some drama storytime nonsense like that. Who is this game written for? The same kind of innumerate people who removed Descending Armor Class by D&D 3rd-ed because "subtraction is hard" and they were too embarrassed counting down one-by-one to do subtraction as Common Core math demands. There is a general dumbing down of RPGs from the heyday and its birth from highly numerical board wargames. I should plead that people should try to upgrade their math and thinking abilities (for SF games, science) to match the RPGs, not dumb down the RPGs to match you! Seriously, it's a good way to weed out bad RPGs. Check for rules for falling-damage and other real physical hazards, and what they are going to do to a character. *It's a cushion for the emotions.* Fate seems to be geared for people ill-prepared to accept that sometimes their characters will have bad breaks, or even die. The benefits and perils of a situation must balance out in a Fate Core economy, resulting in some ups and downs more suitable to a movie-plot than a real physical world. Venger Satanis, a notorious GM, says he runs games with at least 8-10 players and averages a character death every 3 sessions. Good luck seeing that in Fate! If you are close to running out of Consequence slots, you can declare a Concede and, somehow, the universe keeps you alive. This makes sense not to kill off the main character in a movie, since so much has been invested to put a character there and make him last two hours, but cinematic RPG is only a subset of the whole RPG experience. *Benefits and drawbacks aren't scaled.* Players state what their characters intend to do, and the action is interpreted under one of the four Actions of Fate, fine. But any benefit from an Aspect, Stunt, or Aspect resulting from the environment offers you exactly the same thing: a +2 or re-roll. Any drawback offers the opposition the same thing: a +2 (no re-roll). No +1's, no +3's, no 1/2's. My favourite RPG has a long table of tactical modifiers of all different magnitudes totalled to give a clearly understood percentile chance. Right or wrong, they attempt to quantify the relative effects of many different factors. Now there is some effort by the GM not to allow a "weaksauce" Compel, and make sure Aspects really are grand enough to be worth a +2, but tactical finesse in Fate, the marshalling to stack odds in your favour, is so chunky as to be meaningless.

@@dianinda5782 Could be! I suggest that game fans should not seek to dumb down games, but build up the gamers. Teach them speed-reading and fast addition of two-digit numbers, so they can grasp the whole sense of a game author's intention, and then home-rule things if they must.

@@Dracopol I was thinking about your comments and to a large degree I do note that FATE is sometimes story driven to the point of impairing some of the things I and my crew value about RPG's - namely the risk. So part of what is "taking so long" for me personally to set up a campaign (and I'm not in a hurry, there are 3 other people running their own campaigns - each with a different rules set) is that I do not like the "consequences" of fights; 1- vagueness of the concede mechanic mitigates too much risk and flattens the experience; 2-I"m still sorting out how to best use the "consequences" in a meaningful way - i.e. do I make an effort to have NPCs invoke/compel them in each subsequent encounter. This wouldn't be such a concern in ... say... Harnmaster, where graphic wounds negatively impact chances to succeed and the healing process itself carries a risk of infection (and death).

I have not read entirely the new Fate Core, but as I know, I rather like the second Fate edition way more. The new Fate has some points about skills types and mandatory aspects which remind me more of a tabletop game, I don't now exactly how to explained it. I personally think they should maintain the tone of that second edition.

Kurt, you forgot to mention the other thing that makes Fate Accelerated Edition such a great gateway product- the low, low price! At just five dollars for the hard copy, a pack of Fate Dice is literally more expensive than the game itself! question about the system. how do you manage the damages due to a great fall (like two or three stories high) in Core Fate? how much stress boxes? or going straight to the Consequences aspects? In some games like Nova Praxis or Eclipse Phase Transhuman Fate, there are bodies that are much more durable than a frail human one.
@jakedarby1972
8 жыл бұрын
Denis De Plaen I know this comment is very late, but it depends on the system and narrative. If your character is reasonably tough enough to not care about such a drop, then don't. Maybe give some interesting narrative description and move on; it's just not interesting to deal with minute damage when it's not going to have any impact. Now if the above doesn't apply, then it depends on the actual situation. If the characters are purposefully dropping down a long drop outside of combat, then it could be an automatic consequence or it could be an overcome roll vs a fixed difficulty with a failure dealing stress that can only be taken in consequences. If it's in a scene where they might reasonably take more stress then the above options are still good but can be applied to stress rather than just consequences. Another fun option could be running such a fall as a contest of the player vs the pit, where they repeatedly struggle as they fall and they either halt/slow themselves enough on a success, or suffer the logical consequences of such a drop on a failure.

Good review. I admit I am very tempted to give FATE a try. I have it on pdf and am tempted to buy the corebook and let rip :) UPDATE: Am playing a game right now using the Camelot Trigger setting. I have to admit that whilst I would happily play a game using FATE I'd never run a game using it. Whilst the core mechanic of rolling the 4 dice and adding the appropriate skill is fairly straightforward, the whole system of tagging and compelling aspects is all very odd too me to the point where I simply can't see why anyone calls it a rules light game. I find the system very confusing and tbh I could never recommend it to a beginner to RPGs. As I say I'll play it but I'd never buy it, run it or recommend it. I do understand why it is liked but its really not for me.

I'm actually using FAE to introduce our 6-year old to RPG's using the Harry Potter-verse for background. Are you using Fate Core? Try the Accelerated Edition until you get the Fate economy down, then you can "hack" FAE or expand to Core. It was fun watching her choose her approaches. She decided that Careful would be the best for flying brooms and mixing potions. I tried the free pdfs and really enjoyed the game whereupon I bought hard-copies of Core and FAE. It's a great business model because they are counting on you falling in love with the game and wanting that tangible asset in your hands. There's still nothing like holding the book and flipping the pages. I intend to buy a few more copies of FAE to give to players as they try the game. They can get their own copies of Fate Core once they're hooked! ;)

I tried to read a couple of Fate games and just didn't get it. It seems to fall too far outside what I consider a game to be. The 'squishy' bits mentioned in the video. I prefer systems that are not as 'squishy'. I also haven't a clue how it grew out of Fudge.

Yeah, I have the same feel, it is mainly due to the aspects, I do want to get into Fudge, because as Ive seen, its a more structured game, but still allows you to play any setting you can imagine. Another good generic RPG is called OVA, I like it a lot, but I wonder how well it could run with post-apocalyptic games, which is where it kind of breaks since its based around anime, also all weapons and armor are built WITH the character, so it would be a bit hard and pointless to make looting and scavenging a bigger part of the game, without a lot of prepping. I want to find the perfect generic RPG that I can run ANYTHING with. If I cant find one, I'll continue making my own homebrewed one.

godzillang2 OVA is interesting, though I have only read it. If I were to run a PA game *right now* I would probably go with either the 1992 edition of Gamma World (out of print obviously) OR The Mutant Epoch which is currently available.

Ive seen your review on Mutant Epoch a while back and thought, thats amazing! Although I never got around to buying it, sadly. I have just recently bought OVA and read it, thinking about running a game with my cousin. I have watched some anime (although I was way more interested in the system when i saw the book) and it really can run anything from Trigun (a cyberpunk cowboy setting) to Guyver (An interesting anime about a sybiotic organism that can be called upon that enhances the user's abilities and such. Watched it as a kid, and with an idea as weird as that I though, "if an rpg can handle that concept smoothly, it really can handle anything. I'll probably do something high action at first like the Guyver, but to be honest the way its system works is (as I take a second look at it) incredibly simple yet in depth to work or be adapted to anything. Maybe I'll try breaking the game with a horror/post-apocalyptic game just to test its limits as a generic rpg.

I bought the full shot of FATE Core books. The Worlds were very nicely done settings from the zany (King Louis XV's decadent French court at a time when human-meat loving aliens decide to disembark on Earth. You might have the means to repel them, but how do you negotiate the byzantine politics to convince the Court there is a problem?) to the more grounded in reality (a squad of fire-fighters with info which divulges their lingo and operating methods). I do not know if those were reviewed later. This is a big departure if you face RPGs as an exercise in learning number-crunching rules. Okay, your first expectation upon facing yet another big RPG book is that you expect numbered skills to relate to dice-rolls and oh is there going to be dice-pools in this one? No, there's a bit of numbers but the most strain you'll have most of the time is adding 2 to something. That's it. It's all verbal descriptions, but as you can expect you must choose the words in your Aspects carefully to make them double-edged (you can call on them to help your character or have fun with an Aspect that causes problems for your character). NPC opponents, situations (Foggy), locations (Slippery, Muddy Field), equipment (Armor-Piercing!), all have Aspects, and again choose your definitions carefully. The operating method is to leave index-cards all over the place to keep track of these verbal statuses. Sometimes an Aspect will change or be removed by player action. Spend Fate points to exploit advantages for your character, or accept a disadvantage and get a Fate point back. Another shock: the players will help you design the game as you retcon new NPCs, new organizations and plots based on the characters' Aspects based on back-story. That's okay since any Aspects they suggest could just as easily turn to their disadvantage. The books have pleasing covers with a rubbery feel, the printing is excellent with excellent inked art throughout, small page-number notes help cross-reference concepts (and you will need all the organizational help you can get for these strange new concepts.)
