It happened because Oberyn cared more about avenging his sister than saving Tyrion; but also, there was a nice bit of foreshadowing of this last episode. One thing they don't do a great job explaining in the show vs the books about Obryn was not only did he want revenge, he wanted to go to war with the Lanisters as revenge. He needed The Mountain's confession in order to make that happen. I think Arya's laugh is a laugh at the gods. There’s a saying in writing: “kill your darlings.” It’s supposed to be a piece of advice about filtering out ideas during the creative process and not being attached to every little idea you come up with. As a result, you’re left with only your best ideas to work with. One of the little meta reasons that Game of Thrones is so great is that it uses this idea literally. It creates great characters, whom you really connect with and see as traveling on the hero’s path… and then it kills them.

That parting shot of the long procession of the triumphant Bolton army, with Winterfell looming in the distance already looking so dreary and lifeless, ready to welcome its new masters. A new dark chapter has begun in the North. Speaking of the North, how good was the interrogation scene in the Vale? All the Sansa-Baelish scenes are as excellent as they're creepy. Just watch Baelish's face when he says "you think you know me". Aidan Gillen plays the most convincing predator lol.

Tyrion's story about the Uncle smashing bugs with a rock was not in the books. This was added by Dan&Dave, the screenwriters for GOT who were adapting the books, who were referring to GOT book-author George Martin, who in their view smashed characters like bugs but "had his reasons".
@ellocosenor8582

Tyrion's point in his conversation with Jaime is a kind of reflection on the transience of life and the brutality of existence. Many terrible things happen for no reason. Furthermore, there is also the consideration regarding the death of Orson, kicked by the mule almost as he did with the ants: this sort of divine justice is another theme very dear to Martin and which we have often seen in Got (for example the death of Joeffrey which happens to cheat on his wedding much like Robb's ending). But the most important thing about that scene is that Tyrion does not answer the question, which he poses to Jaime but perhaps more than anything else he poses to himself. This leaves the matter open to interpretation.

Something to keep in mind about Missandei and Grey worms romance, the juxtaposition of their arcs is fantastic. Both slaves pretty much from childhood. lowborn, and shackled for their entire lives. But at the same time, grey worm is an incredibly gifted fighter even among an army of 8000 strong. THe unsullied are like machines in skill and fortitude. Meanwhile shes more well versed in over a dozen languages, smarter than a vast majority of the worlds population. Her brains and his skill, both layered under never getting to truely express themselves. Its a beautiful story for the two of them.

Lysa knew exactly how much trouble she was creating. Littlefinger told Arryn to poison her husband, she did. She also told Cat that it was the Lannisters that did it knowing that Cat would want to protect Ned from the same fate.

I mean...you have to have some sympathy for her. She's been in love with LF since she was 14? 15? years old, but he was crushing on her older sister. Lysa gives him her virginity and gets pregnant, and her dad tells her LF isn't good enough for her and forces her to have an abortion. Then he marries her to a 60 year old man (Jon Arryn was something like 20+ years older than her *own father*!!) Then she's thrown into court politics in KL as a teenager while her grandaddy of a husband serves as Hand to Robert. There is no love between them because (1) he knows she wasn't "pure" and (2) how much can a 60 year old have in common with a 15 year old? Who is there to support her? Ned and Cat have fled to Winterfell. Do you think Cersei extended her hand in friendship? To add to her sad story, she had 5 miscarriages and 2 stillbirths before she finally gave birth to Robyn. She was ripe for the pickings when Littlefinger made his way to Kings Landing.

@@Sab_MJsMama even before then, when Cat captured Tyrion and took him to the Eyrie, she could have told Cat that she lied and that she's the one who poisoned her own husband. Tyrion would have been let go, Jamie and the Lannisters wouldn't have retaliated by capturing and then later beheading Ned, Rob wouldn't have gone to war, Theon wouldn't have betrayed them, Bran and Rickon wouldn't have had to flee Winterfell, and Sansa and Arya would have been fine too. Ned would still have been investigating the Lannister children, so... he probably would have ended up in the same position and everything else would be the same, except Tyrion wouldn't have been captured by Cat

Out of all of the shocking deaths on the show, this one is probably the most shocking. Ned and Robb you can start to see their mistakes way before they die. Even though we're used to the heroes winning in most stories there's a sense of dread as things start to go awry for them. With Ned we can start to see it after he got injured and then after he gets arrested and it's hard to imagine "How will he get out of this?" even with it being believed he'd be sent to the Wall. Robb starts to lose his men after killing Karstark, and it's mentioned many many times that him crossing Frey was a bad decision. Oberyn though is so quick that you don't really have time to think about him actually losing, even though Bronn foreshadows this exact thing. It is also very obviously playing with the "My name is Inigo Montoya" from The Princess Bride with Oberyn constantly repeating The Mountain's crimes as he fights. It's priming you both consciously (Oberyn legitimately winning) and subconsciously (Paralleling a famous, heroic, piece of media) and it's ripped away in seconds without giving you time to fully process what in the world is happening. It's brilliant, and infuriating at the same time.

So just because good character's die does not mean that it's bad storytelling. It's called being invested in the show and the characters. It's a good thing that you were hurt that oberyn died especially in the way he died. I was hurt too but it doesn't mean it's wasted character... Sometimes when a really great character dies it causes a cascade effect of other incidents and things happening that will keep things interesting down the road and that's. How ned has stayed alive through basically the entire season even when he's not there.. But almost everything that has happened since ned was executed has been a result of the execution of ned stark...

Oberyn's mistake is actually a very common one shown in movies and shows, waiting before making the final move. I know he had a purpose here, he wanted to make the mountain confess about Tywin's orders but that and his over confidence just got him killed. He should have just killed the mountain and got it over with, he would have received justice for his sister, nephew and niece's death.

Didn’t she offer the entire Unsullied army the chance to leave once she acquired them? None of them were shown to have left. Oberyn is one of the best depicted characters ever. He is great in the book, but Pedro's portrayal and a bit of extra development make him one of my very favorites, one season (book) or not. Read them. There are several big plots dropped from the show that are brilliant. Though don't rush... still waiting on book 6. Also, when you read, I strongly recommend reading 4 and 5 differently from 4 then 5. He split the books geographically. If you split book 4 in 4 and 5 in 5 then alternate 4/5/4/5/4/5/4/5/5/5 you get it chronologically which I have found more satisfying (yes, I've read it both ways).

What Jorah did shouldn’t be taken so lightly. The only reason the lannisters know that dany was building an army, is coming for kings landing and has three dragons is because of Jorah’s reports.. she completely lost the element of surprise and unknowingly got a target on her back because of him. not to mention he is the one who told them that she was pregnant which lead to the attempt on her and her baby’s life. The reason for George R.R. Martin to kill off such good characters, even though they could have been developed more, is his self-confidence as a writer and his respect for good drama. He knows that he can create new good characters and give them good or even better character arcs. And the main goal for him (and that I do respect) is to tell an unpredictable story, like the real life works, so to speak. So many plots have died out with character deaths, like in real life. So much uncertainty, like in real life. He wants to give us something else than the streamlined “Hollywood script”. That’s why I love (and hate) even the deaths of my beloved characters as Ned, Rob, Oberyn and so forth.
