Cersei's desire to break the rules (wanting to rule as a man) yet doing nothing but huff and mock people once she has done so is very telling of her character. Tyrion only wants to be seen as an equal, Varys 'keeps on rowing' while Littlefinger tries to be the second biggest fish, and Pycelle just takes whatevers left. Wonderful writing

IMHO you overcomplicate. It was a game of chairs beside Tywin. LF rushed to the nearest, other 2 sat in order. So Cersei naturally seeing herself as the second in charge without any thoughts of "why not?" grabed the closest to destination chair and put it closer to Tywin; if both closest sides were taken she'd probably took one anyway. So for Tyrion it was more like a wit answer than a statement. If everyone wants a cool place... what would actually be the coolest one? ;) And Tywin's face at that moment: oh your jokes again

This is one of my favorite scenes of whole show. The first minute and a half with the chairs is an entire wordless story in itself that perfectly showcases the personalities of all the characters involved: Tywin the power and authority around which everyone moves. Littlefinger cuts everyone off to get to the front. Pycelle is pretending to be old and slow. Cersei is so petty as to completely rearrange to chairs to what suits her best. Tyrion is cleverly finds a way to get a good spot even though it appears as though there isnt one. Its a shame that fun and nuanced moments like this were sacrificed in leu of whatever the hell season 8 was. It was these scenes that got me to fall in love with the show.

There's no dialogue from any till Tyrion starts about a minute & three quarters in, but we can see how they're all cuddling up to Tywin with Baelish & Varys hurrying for the nearest seats to him. Then Cersei drags her seat next to her father; then Tyrion pulls his seat to the opposite head of the table. These kind of scenes, with no dialogue but you can still tell what is going on by the character's actions, are a rarity.
@dwight3555

Varys wasn't hurrying for the nearest seat, he wants to "keep on paddling while the big fish eat the little fish". He's in the middle because it's a good "hiding" position and because Pycelle will always be last due to his weak old man act.

2 minutes without a single spoken word and yet so much substance, this is peak "show, don't tell".

Tyrion: [says something]. Tywin: "Fully agreed." This is the most appreciation Tyrion ever gets from his father. I think even he is surprised.

"Politics is more like real estate, its about location. The closer you are to the source, the more valuable you are" #Frank Underwood. These scene is very reminiscent of this quote, given how closer all these characters are intent to be to Lord Tywin.
