I was very glad to see someone actually criticize Yakuza 0 instead of mindlessly praising it as everybody around does. Sadly, although you've pointed out a lot of plot holes and stupid cliches indeed, you also called many "false sins" which are either far-fetched or just make no sense. 0:07 Kiryu does indeed look like a grown man, but is it possible to be like this in 20? Absolutely. And also he actually does have wrinkles on his face in Yakuza 6 (where he's almost 50), especially if you compare his looks with Yakuza Kiwami 2. 0:13 As Dojima mentioned later, the bureaucratic procedures for the redevelopment have already been started despite an unresolved issue with Empty Lot - that little piece of land didn't bother anybody indeed, so long as it's owner was missing and not causing trouble. Might as well announce it already. 1:08 Clearly they were not alone in the ramen shop - someone has actually served them food. That person might have as well turned the TV on. 1:30 Yeah, and after quitting the alley they have also wasted some time on talking to paid girls, drinking and singing karaoke in bar, and then eating ramen. That all combined could really prolong the time until morning. 1:48 Police has started looking for a murderer, Kiryu comes in and confesses in murder, he gets arrested, everyone is happy. What's wrong with that? Don't forget the game is based on the real 1980s Japan when the police force has actually been quite weak and had to tolerate yakuza business in red light districts - they sure would've accepted that yakuza has dealt with the issue internally without needing to investigate and then actually trying to arrest any of them by force. 2:05 That's pretty understandable from a human perspective - Kuze expected that Kiryu, being a subordinate yakuza, would indeed go and give himself in, and generously gave him a day to take care of all his business in his private life before going in jail for a decade or more. But, oops, Kiryu didn't prove to be as obedient as he expected to. 2:12 Once again, understandable - the guy holding a gun was quite frightened and not willing to shoot in the first place. 2:35 So… what's exactly wrong with that? I personally would give them credit for covering it up properly. 3:00 Uh, no. Not when you're going to build a solid giant skyscraper on all the purchased land - there's no way it'll sit on all of it except for this one little 3*3 meter plot. 3:27 Again, not something looking as impossible in real life as you describe it. 5:52 I thought we were talking about the main story sins, now you're actually jumping to side quest mechanics? It's not like you were actually forced to do any of those, might as well just skip them and keep going with the story. I mean, sure, lots of substories in the game is kinda meh, but you should have expressed that in some better way. Especially considering the fact substories is far from being the only side content in the game, and there are tons of sins in the other side content as well. 6:03 This may sound absurd indeed, but when you look deeper in how the homeless operate in Kamurocho throughout this game, as well as other Yakuza series, you may be surprised how luxurious they actually are - many of them can get well paid jobs, they have a whole underground infrastructure, and later on they even populate their own whole fortress with actual gambling and casino business. From that point of view the pickiness in alcohol looks not like a sin, but like merely a tip of an iceberg. 6:51 Uh… Could he maybe hold his hand like that because he's actually being tense at the moment? You put your arm down only after you chill, not before. 8:07 That's not the actual problem. The actual problem is these flashbacks with Saejima can only be sympathised by those who played Yakuza 4, whereas for those who started with Yakuza 0 they are just confusing, as they don't give an explanation, what in the actual F has Majima done wrong to be punished like that. 8:26 So… you just can't assume Sagawa lied from the start about Makoto's personality, can you? It's not like he was a very honest man to begin with. 8:44 Still not seeing any issues. The "Makoto Makimura" alias is used by Wen Hai Lee in public, only the people close to him (like Majima, Chinese or the actual Makoto) know his real name. I thought you'd be aware of this after completing the game. 9:14 And how exactly it's supposed to tell Majima this isn't Makoto? Given that in the moment he knows only what Sagawa told him and what the college girl told him, he may only be suspicious about whether's the man evil or not, there's nothing pointing him to thinking his name isn't Makoto and Makoto is a completely different person. The profession documentation he sees doesn't contradict with his shady business, it may just as well be his front. 9:30 Uh, no, he was not planning to kill her at this moment. He was still aiming for a man named Makoto Makimura, without any idea about the woman. 9:39 Yes, and it's totally expected from her, given the fact she hides her own name, and also hides the fact the boss uses her name. You don't really think Wen Hai Lee actually took her name without her permission, do you? 10:03 Oh. You actually do think the girl is unaware of that. Well, sorry to dissapoint you… 10:40 Well, yeah, it's quite obvious Majima wouldn't just kill her like that, but he certainly wasn't able to kill her before either - if you forgot, he was actually quite busy trying to prevent her kidnapping, and I doubt killing her in a public place was such a good idea, especially while being pursued by angry yakuza. 10:45 You know that shops can also sell premade suits, some of which might even fit you instantly, don't you? [See part 2 below]
@Veetrill_UKR
Жыл бұрын
11:06 Well, sure, they don't see a point in wasting time torturing an old friend of Tachibana, expecting him to be extremely loyal, when instead then can just follow him to Kiryu who at this point barely even knows Tachibana. 11:41 Once again, you misjudge something for a sin, while missing a much more obvious sin. The fact the yakuza swarmed the Kamurocho streets, blocking Kiryu's paths until he stumbles on this little club, is not that surprising, that could be easily planned given how many people the Dojima Family posseses. What's more stupid is the fact Kiryu has come to Kamurocho in the first place. Why, just WHY? What's the point of coming into the town where you know people are looking for you, while you must do anything possible to not get caught? Are there no other towns in Japan to come to, like really? 12:08 Come on, you're just nitpicking here. Sure, this game (as well as the series overall) does have issues with boss repeatability, but this Kuze fight is actually quite different from the first one, given the fact it's Kuze now uses a pipe with a completely different move set, and the fight itself is in a much more contrasting scenery. 12:31 Well, duh. This is Japanese, it's quite poor on vocabulary, especially when it comes to swearing. If everything was translated literally, it would be just unbearably boring to read for a Westerner. 14:28 And… where exactly does the game state Makoto was unaware of Lee's shady business? Probably in the same place it stated she has no idea that he uses her name. 15:12 Do you really think girls would not be aware about Majima's yakuza affiliation when they actually work in a yakuza-owned cabaret located in a yakuza-controlled town? 16:09 Did you forget Nishitani is in good terms with a corrupt cop that makes his stay behind the bars quite comfortable and even allows to leave whenever he wishes to? From this perspective it looks barely like a setback for him. Maybe not even a setback at all. 16:31 Sagawa knew about Makoto's real personality and lied to Majima? Like, maybe? Just maybe? 20:46 Instead of whining about the repeated bosses, you'd do well to notice a much more obvious sin. Nishitani gives his speech about how good staying in prison is, since it's being guarded and allows carrying no weapons inside… and shortly after he proceeds to fight Majima with a dagger, while Majima himself is free to use whatever weapon he has in his inventory. 23:41 She hears a hostile man coming and screaming at her. I guess even if you're blind you should not expect a friendly tap on a shoulder after that. 23:57 Could it be that Oda decided to betray Tachibana later - for example when Tachibana was actually able to locate the missing owner, and so Oda knew his time was running short? And why would yakuza look for Tachibana at this point, if Makoto was actually their primary target, whereas Tachibana and Kiryu were only means to get to her? 26:05 Once again, a reminder, this game is about Japanese 80s, when yakuza were powerful as ever. And speaking about police looking for Kiryu - you probably forgot the fact Tachibana has actually pulled to some strings so that police ignored Kiryu for some time. 26:26 and afterwards I'm pretty sure Shimano's stupid plan of giving the Empty Lot to Omi was written like that on purpose - after all, by just looking on Shimano you kinda understand this brute is good with using his fists, not his head, and any his attempt to set a complicated strategy into motion would result in a cringe. 30:07 This one is solid, no complaints. However, I'd add one more to this - why didn't Lao Gui give a single headshot to Awano, but instead wasted all his bullets on his torso, only to have run out of them when it comes to Majima? Some god damn killer he is. 31:54 I think Sera meant exactly what you replied afterwards - he intended to sell this land to Dojima by placing an insane price of 100 billion yen, knowing Dojima wouldn't pay such money and would be forced to negotiate. 32:57 Yes, this is the first time they met each other, however they have both heard a lot of stuff about each other before meeting, so it's quite understandable they both would look forward to it. In Majima's case it's actually even highlighted - when in finale you switch to Majima and approach to Nishiki waiting for Kiryu, you'll have a dialogue where Majima says he'd be real curious to meet Kiryu in person, but had no spare time to wait for him at the moment. So, was there 177? Make it 144.

The risk of firing a gun at kiryu and for him to survive/shrug it off or him just dodging the bullet would have serious repercussions when he comes back to beat the shit out of you afterwards. That loan shark was right for not risking it and just giving up. 3:32.. ah this seems like your "first" yakuza game. It doesn't matter if shintaro kazama only appears in the flashback. Just gonna go through state the issues with your sins. Definitely enjoyed the criticism of the story mind you, I don't mind the different perspective, and I agree with some of your criticisms, but you did a lot of nitpicking for no real good reason. Sin #3 You're way off base about it being a budget problem, it was solely a stylistic choice. Yakuza Kiwami came after this, had a much smaller budget and development time, and never made use of cutscenes like this. Yakuza 5 came out before this, never used the same style either. I also can't see how those cutscenes would save much "budget". Sin #7 This is more of a criticism of your editing here, you never showed the TV being turned off, you're totally right though that it just conveniently turns on, but it expositing info isn't a problem outside of it given it's just a news broadcast. Sin #10 & 11 So which is it? Is it a frame job from the Lieutenants or are they getting ahead of themselves with discarding Kiryu? Sin #16 The plan with that area from all sides vying for it was presumably to build one big commercial center building there. The Empty lot was situated smack dab in the middle of it, there would have been no way to build around it without compromising on scale of the project. The Millennium Tower in later games is what ends up being built there, proving my point. Sin #31 Why do some people do this shit lol. Just because you're a criminal it doesn't mean that you're a heartless, ruthless killer by default. If I made you run petty operations like theft or assault, but suddenly promoted you to murder instead, you would balk too, it's a tough line to cross. I don't think we should ridicule the writing of the series for putting so much weight on what murder means just because we have media that treats it so non-chalantly. The Yakuza series in particular comes back to this constantly, they treat killing as a big line to cross, one that would only be crossed by these traditionalist type of Yakuza when it's them and their loved ones lives against anothers -- One of my favorite scenes in the series being from Majima's sworn brother, Saejima, in Yakuza 4 where he breaks down crying when he cant bring himself to kill another man to simply satisfy the bloodthirst of the onlooking crowd and the deathmatch's organizer. He criticizes them for how they treat human life so callously, and goes on to detail the mental anguish he goes through day after day and night after night from the PTSD from the 18-count Ueno Seiwa hit they mention in this game's flashback. I can't help but feel that scene is also a criticism towards players like you who get angry at some of the Yakuza series' protagonist for being "pussy" and not being so eager to murder, despite you yourself being simply an observer who has never taken a life. Sin #38 It would be weird if they didn't show Saejima's scene considering he's a large part of Majima's motivation to get back into the Yakuza, though I guess if they were going to show Saejima they should have done a little bit more than keep vaguely hinting towards that motivation throughout his half of the story. Sin #41 At first I was kind of in agreement with you, but thinking about it a little more it makes perfect sense. Why would Lee use his real name for his shady side business when he is a straight-laced chiropractor? The Yakuza who show up to kill Makimura also state to Lee something to the effect "You can't keep getting away with that little trick" when Lee tried to say he was Makoto Makimura, so chances are hes been purposefully using himself as a red herring. Sin #43 He's ready to kill, no one said he was a pure hero, especially not with the shit the guy pulls in later games. He didn't kill her not because her being blind made him feel worse about it, but rather because she's blind, she doesn't know he's clearly there to kill someone. Sin #55 If you're not playing Yakuza at least partly for the side content, then you're not playing Yakuza. Fair enough if you just want a long story, but that's just not what this game is about. Nevermind that the real estate part there also sets up the next part of the story with Awano. Sin #63 You ever lifted a manhole with your bare hands? Whilst on a ladder? Sin #67 That's what makes it good though! This game builds the bond between Nishiki and Kiryu FAR better than Yakuza 1 could in its first 20 minutes before Kiryu gets sent to jail. And for someone starting with Yakuza 0 they wouldn't know how it ends. Feels weird to have a sin for the perspective of someone playing the other games when there are other sins in this video that are explained by the other games. Sin #83 I'm pretty sure somewhere along the line Sagawa got the notice that Makoto was a girl too, the guys who came for her were Omi, he's a high ranking member of the Omi. Sin #91 Comedy my dude. Sin #103 I didn't... Nor did like, any of the people I also saw play this game until they started making it increasingly obvious 2 chapters before the final reveal. Sin #105 I think the logic moreso here is have Majima sniff the guy out since he's more competent at this shit which at least gets Makoto out of enemy hands. Sin #107 The point he was making in that very same scene is that they *don't* come back, no one is surviving an entire year of fighting. Even more, he doesn't give a damn about their well-being or justice, he's just entertaining himself with the fuck-you money he gets from his shady dealings with the Yakuza. Again, literally explicitly explained in that scene. Sin #110 I'm not gonna defend this series' constant use of casually deciding who dies and who doesn't on a whim, but you don't even know if Billiken survives, he's not important enough to the plot past that point for it to be reported. Sin #124 & 125 and whichever ones you reference gameplay in - The gameplay scenes are always unrelated and over-the-top, why aren't you references the hundreds of heat actions that should literally kill most of the people Kiryu comes across? Hell, in a normal world even his regular punches should have at least a 10% casualty rate, even in Boxing and MMA people die from that shit. Sin #130 Man they explained this explicitly. Oda genuinely liked Tachibana, why the fuck would he sell out Tachibana when all he wants dead is Makoto? Also, he's only been leaking information to Shibusawa, not Awano or Kuze, the Yakuza as explained and showed multiple times through this game, are not one cohesive hivemind. Sin #144 Definitely agree with how dumb that whole "twist" is lmao. Sin #166 Legitimate complaint if you haven't played the other games, but another point for Sin #67 being an illegitimate one. Sin #169 Again, it ain't about what people think, it's a dark line to cross like they say. Petty theft and battery are ten worlds removed from **murder**. Just because someone's a criminal, it doesn't make them psychopathic.

Oh yeah another thing I remembered since I replayed Yakuza 0 is that Dojima made Lao Gui kill the guy in the empty lot because he WANTED to implicate Kazama and finally get rid of him. Reminder that despite having a working relationship, Dojima and Kazama don't exactly see eye to eye. In this game alone you constantly see Kazama's chess moves to undermine Dojima, let alone their diametric opposition in Yakuza principles. Letting Kiryu go out of the family means Kazama is the one who has to take responsibility for Kiryu's actions, and obviously Dojima needed a reason to justify getting rid of Kazama since the Yakuza are all about tradition and form, showcased and explained many, many times throughout the game. There wasn't some kind of giant glaring plot hole the writers of the story missed here. That's my problem with these type of videos, you treat the writers as if they're dumb whilst in the process ignoring every little explanation given to you. The thing is the underground arena was the absolute worst example, where Biliken flat out explains in the same sentence you're criticizing, WHY he's doing what he's doing.

While side-content is the butter on the bread that is the Yakuza-experience, you're completely free to ignore it if you want to focus on the main-plot. There are very few situations where direct translations might not be the best choice. Very few. And even in those situations, is kind of a grey area, rather than the correct decision. In all other aspects is called "butchering the original". And "Kimi" is certainly not the same as "Fuckwad"
