Thanks for all the feedback so far guys! I really appreciate you guys writing in and I'm THRILLED so many of you are enjoying it.! Just so you know, we have two other episodes already filmed, but after that I'll start trying to work in some of these notes. Based on your advice, things we'll definitely be trying: 1) Trying at least one as less-scripted and 2) Not ending in a tie, but still letting you give your opinion at the end :) Those are the major two I've seen so far, but keep the ideas coming!

Nice comment. On another note though I feel like he knew, but remember that this is about TWO consoles. Putting another console in there would come out of topic. Since this is a debate, they have to give facts about their item in debate. If you say "Well you know, Atari had those before" he would still not make a point because he isn't defending his console. I hope this is not confusing lol
@NeoN-PeoN
9 жыл бұрын
Nani Torres You are somewhat correct, mentioning Atari would not have put his console on top of controller tech but it would weaken the asserted claim that Genesis INVENTED wireless controllers by showing that this was not the case. So in effect, it would make sense that Gerard would not have done any extra damage by touting Atari but it would make sense if it would have reduced his damage taken. No?

yeah though those had the issue that they were big as they used radio antennas and they were giant so then they went to using the exact same tech as TV remotes and yeah they had tons of issue really if you wanted to say which was the first to nail it down and actually make it mainstream look no further than the wavebird controller made for the gamecube at Nintendo

After making a research I have some things to say, 1: Wireless Controls: The wirelesss controls are not originally from Sega, they are from the Atari 2700 released in 1981 2: Downloadable content: Believe It or not, the Atari came up with the idea. How? Let me explain. The GameLine was a cartridge for the Atari 2600 which could download games using a telephone line. Atari wasn't so primitive as you may think uh? 3: Backward compability: Seriously? Only Super Gameboy?, the SNES also had Super 8 allowing people to play NES games in the SNES and, by the way, why to buy Sega CD and 32X when the FX and Mode 7 in SNES makes pretty much that only with specific cartriges instead of a whole periferic, Also, The Atari 7800 had backwards Compability TWO YEARS BEFORE THE GENESIS HAD RELEASED 3 out of 5, It seem like Sega came up only with online stuff but if you ask me, the SNES had FX chip, Mode 7, Multitap, Super Scope and better games made by Rare(Donkey Kong Country, Killer instict), Capcom (Megaman X, Ghouls and ghosts) Konami(Gradius, TMNT) And I can keep up all day long but "Nintendo is what Genesisn´t"

Mario and Sonic would be a good debate for this channel though I see Mario winning still as the only bad Mario games I can think of, and I am talking about majorly bad, were made by different people so for modern titles Mario would take the cake that Peach keeps giving him.

The 32X and CD add-ons were negligible, only really giving the Genesis a temporary extension to its life, and not worth it. Also, Sega wasn't exactly solo on the online play and downloadable content front. The SNES had a Japan-only service through St.GIGA, known as Satellaview. Users could download and listen to radio streams, read articles, download games that were either "BS-X" remakes, or full-on, story-driven chapter games which streamed voice audio alongside the game to add depth. There were also data packs that essentially acted as DLC for existing games. As well, there was XBAND, the online play service that used dial-up for some multiplayer. Of course, it was functional on the Genesis as well. Meganet was, in essence, some of the same. Japan-only, offered online play, had exclusive Meganet titles, and even offered Mega Anser, a banking utility that basically allowed the device to be multi-purpose. It unfortunately failed, though Sega Channel proved to be a much stronger contender. It wasn't dial-up, but instead, used your cable signal. It allowed demos and even access to games that would not get international release, had built-in cheat codes, and receive news, mostly about gaming. Unfortunately, it only lasted a couple of years. The release time conflicted with the Sega Saturn, so it was ultimately ended then. In a way, with Satellaview lasting 8 years comparatively, maybe Nintendo was the stronger opponent. But Satellaview only got big for Japan, where St.GIGA existed. Sega paved the way, being a more international type of company.

I think it's better this way, if they decided to declare one of them the winner then the comment section would have been 90% people whining over why their favorite didn't won , not saying that there will not be arguments at the moment, but....just look at the goku vs superman episode of deathbattle's comment section and you will see what I mean

Basically. The problem issues like these pose for channels like this are the fact they can't simply pick a side without considerable negative backlash from fans... And how about the nintendo satelite deal where you could download a special version of legend of zelda which "aired" for a short period in japan where users could download these specially made games. It even had a live commentary for those who took part of the event.

Umm...Lolli, the two icons of Nintendo are Mario and DK, not Link. Sure Link is well known in the gaming world, but Mario and DK are the technical official mascots of Nintendo. And both had games that were plat-formers, in the case that Link has no platforming games aside from Zelda II (Not including CDI games). So how could you do a Deadlock of two characters in which nothing is similar enough to argue over.
@gastonzumbo9860
9 жыл бұрын
Kevin Miller What's the debate here? JRPGS for old school, western for new stuff (really, Persona 3/4 ain't got shit on Elder Scrolls IV/V or Mass Effect, not even mentioning the horrors of what Final Fantasy is today), Warcraft was a lot more influential and is plain better, having a much more rich lore and characters you can care about. Elder Scrolls, Fallout never had such a boom as Elder Scrolls did, and Bethesda truly outdid themselves with Oblivion after the release of Morrowing, compared to Fallout III which was, honestly, kind of a downgrade in almost every sense 'cept for the graphics. Finally, DotA, it wasn't even a video game at the time (for those that live under a rock, dota was originally a Warcraft 3 map) and it created a whole new genre of games. It was limited to what WC3 allowed and it was still great and is still holding up in competitions and casual games, while League is known to cement e-sports as something that can actually be talked about and made gaming competitions a very big thing, it is what it is, a rip-off of the greatest. And I play LoL regularly, in fact I never liked DotA too much, but after League, I'm super into the genre, but LoL is still my favorite moba.

Oh, geez, the megahertz myth... Clock speed ≠ instructions executed per second. In fact, the number of instructions executed per second is _variable._ If the two processors were the same architecture, executing exactly the same machine code, then such a comparison would be relevant here, but they aren't - the SNES had a custom Ricoh 5A22 processor; Genesis, a stock Motorola 68000 (the one clocked at 7.6 MHz). *Way* different architectures, and obviously the machine codes would be different. In fact, in terms of benchmarks, the 5A22 processor was approximately ~1.5 MIPS, edging out the MC68k at ~1.4 MIPS. The two processors were technologically on par with each other, despite the two-fold advantage in clock speed of the MC68k. -5% to Pat for irrelevant hype-mongering, -5% for misleading information, and -1% for bad sportsmanship. So in the closing arguments, Pat had already been knocked down.
@Rosella500

Oh man, thank you for this. And even though their IPS is roughly the same, if either assembly language required more instructions for the same action (or had a smaller cache and needed more load/store instructions) it would have yet another answer for faster processor. Thanks for researching the numbers.

I couldn't have said it better myself. I cringed just a bit when he used MHz as a comparison. I'm just glad someone else looked the actual numbers up so I wouldn't have to haha. But in Mat Pat's defense, I think only a few people other than those who have knowledge in computer engineering would think to look further than just clock speed.

In the end, the job of the console is to run the game. No more, no less. Specs don't matter nearly as much as a well-designed game that is just fun to play, and all the specs in the world won't save a poorly-designed game from being thrown at the wall in frustration. Nintendo knew this quite well. That's why most of the games for SNES were developed in-house, by the people who knew the system best and by people who had a lot of experience designing games. That, and the licensing system ensured that the market wasn't flooded with games, all chasing a limited amount of dollars. It also ensured that most of the revenue for SNES games came back to Nintendo, rather than diluted amongst a bajillion different independent companies. Take from that what you will.
@wyrmofvt
9 жыл бұрын
In the real world, facts _matter._ In arguments to whether one console really is superior to one another, then people's misconceptions about those facts are irrelevant. It has always been my philosophy that you are better served by verified facts and correct understanding of what those facts mean than by ignorance. Now, Jirard could have come back with pointing out that comparing clock speeds between architectures is not very telling, dispelling the megahertz myth with the facts about the processors' ability to crunch numbers (it wasn't hard to find), but that didn't happen. Instead, the clock speed was used as if the difference _actually mattered_ to how well the two consoles played games, and what their limitations were. It strikes of lazy writing and lazy research. The bottom line is that neither console was really "innovative" as pieces of hardware, nor was either particularly advantaged in terms of that hardware, and Sega's "blast processing" line was as Jirard posited: a piece of Sega marketing hype. So *you bet* I'm going to dock MatPat points for that, for _misinforming the public._

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't the first console to have wireless controllers the Atari 2600? Also wasn't the first console to have downloadable games the Intellivision? 9:50 "Backward compatibility with the Mega Drive"? They're the same console.

The Sega Genesis, known as Mega Drive (Japanese: メガドライブ Hepburn: Mega Doraibu?) in most regions outside North America, is a 16-bit home video game console which was developed and sold by Sega Enterprises, Ltd. The Genesis is Sega's third console and the successor to the Master System. Sega first released the console as the Mega Drive in Japan in 1988, followed by a North American debut under the Genesis moniker in 1989. In 1990, the console was released as the Mega Drive by Virgin Mastertronic in Europe, by Ozisoft in Australasia, and by Tec Toy in Brazil. In South Korea it was distributed by Samsung and was known as the Super Aladdin Boy. the sega megadrive and genesis are the same consoles, however the megadrive was released outside of the US, it was never sold here, had to be imported.

So, I liked this series and think it's a great premise. The concept of having two well-known personalities debate out gaming's toughest choices is a great concept and I think you have implemented it well. One thing I noticed though is that you guys are focusing quite a bit on the flashy graphics you made for this new series and less on the actual content. One reason I really like the regular game theory episodes is because they offer a nice amount of in-game content. I realize this is a bit more difficult when talking about consoles, but I would have liked to see more prominence in the consoles and games themselves.

I like them.

I generally love The Game Theory show as it is. I watched most of the episodes out there. My only issue is that I'm a PC Gamer only, and I feel that this channel focuses way too often on console games which means I'm not too familiar with such as Legend of Zelda, Mario, Pokemon, Metroid, Smash Bros, Metal Gear franchises and etc. I watch even episodes with these games regardlessly because enjoy how detailed they are so even a player such as myself gets the basic idea what the episode is all about. But I do hope there will be a nice balance between episode topic choices because there are sometimes months where there are 3-5 "console game" Game Theories in the row and then a PC/Mobile/Other game topic and back to console games. As for DeadLock I really enjoyed it. Good idea and loved the video retro interface. I will definitely watch the future episodes. Though it felt odd that it's a tie when you clearly gave more arguments why Sega had less good games but had much bigger impact on the gaming industry regardlessly.

Seriously, this is pretty awesome. And MatPat, kudos on looking freaking awesome in that black void at the beginning after your introduction of Deadlock. As for SNES vs. Genesis, I'm kinda biased. My console gaming experiences as a child were more lacking than others. I never got the chance to play the games that a lot of people say defined their childhood, and even if I had, I wouldn't have understood them at all. But life stories are for another time and for people who are actually interested enough to ask. My vote is for the Genesis, only because that and the PlayStation 2 were the only consoles I ever had as a kid, and I used to ask my dad every night to let me stay up late so I could play "Sonic & Knuckles". That was my childhood right there.

Well in Japan the SFC or SNES as we say also had a download service where you could download games directly to a cart. ( And there were live broadcasted voice overs too. ) There were also kiosks where you could buy games and load them onto a cart or disk since the 80's. Whoops!

So, here's my feedback. Positive: Love the new segment. I could tell it still had that first episode rust as you're getting down to the core of what works and what doesn't, but I can see that core already and it's beautiful. Critical: I don't care for the life bar/fighting game system, especially if you're just going to end it in a tie. I'd say let a debate be a debate. The extra bits just seem a bit silly and outside of the style we all know you can do well: hardcore analytics with quirky images and videos overlayed.

Dadycoool I'm actually excited to see what looks to be a consistent 2-person series. TJskillz169 You can still pretty soundly establish winners in most debates. Even in that instance, though, the life bars don't quite fit. I would think it either needs to be based on winning definitively on either side or presenting all the valid points to allow the viewers to choose. At this point it's kind of stuck between the two. (Side note, I actually haven't ever been able to post something in the comment section of a video with 3/3 of the first responses being level-headed responses to what I said. Kudos to a great GT community.)

Hey Matpat. Error in your figures. TG16 had Game cases for their Hucards. They were the same size and jewel cases and had a clip inside to hold the game in a plastic sleeve. TG16 came out before both SNES and Genesis, and if it wasn;t for the fact that it used 2 8bit processors for graphics, instead of a 16bit, it would have been the first true 16 bit console. So, as that would take back the points that Nintendo lost on that one, the draw would be broken, and Nintendo wins. You also brought up the Sega CD. Might I add, that THE PC ENGINE (or TurboGrafx 16, was the FIRST video game console to use CD's, with the Super CD-rom unit released in Japan on December 4, 1988, and released the TurboGrafx-CD in the United States on August 1, 1990. As all these point weren't actually on sega's side, that means nintendo's life bar should be higher. (TG16 came out Oct '87 for jap, and Aug '89 for NA Genesis was Oct' 88 for japan, Aug 89 for NA [admittedly before the NA Turbo released] And SNES was Oct 90 for japan, and Aug 91 for NA)

On top of that, the argument that features on an old piece of technology that are being used today does not actually mean that the features themselves were influential. History has proven that 'rediscovery' happens a lot and often without knowledge of the predecessor. For example, to use MattPat's logic, then the entirety of the iphone's current success are owed to the NGage because it was the first phone to feature gaming as the predominant feature. This is factually untrue, but that's using the same logic he's using.
@FawkesB1989
9 жыл бұрын
Matthew Daye Very true facts. The TG16 was an underrated console, even t this day, often unknown to most gamers. However, Matpat, who is known for his thorough research means, should know better then to say it was the FIRST to use CD's and INVENTED game cases, when both claim are factually incorrect. Yes, the sega genesis probably helped usher in the CD as a primary media, but his claim of them being the first to do so, is still incorrect.

To finish this: the controller of the SNES has a huge legacy. Even though the shape is gone, the button layout has stayed with the Dreamcast, Xbox original, 360, and One, and the Playstation original, 2, and 3. Now if we consider the later controllers or the Super Famincon Controller, even the colour scheme lives on with buttons with the Xbox series and New 3DS.

It doesn't matter which came first it matters which controller influenced latter controllers more, which is clearly the snes. The original genesis controller only had three face buttons meaning controls were limited. As the original comment also points out all controllers have the same or similar layout to the snes controller.

So in have multiple things on my mind right now. At The end you say "We've come to a deadlock" then you ask us to vote. Does this mean that every episode will have the characters go to 1% and then the video stops? If this is the case then you might as well just say "Vote which is better The Sega Genisis Or The SNES" and call it an episode. Another thing. I'm curious on how Gaijin Goomba will be apart of this project. His little character can be fighting against Mats little character but his character should also be in the top corner debating. Is there to of Gaijin Goomba? Will Gaijin Goomba have to do a face reveal? Find out next time on DRAGON BALL Z

in my opinion, or at least as far as I can tell. It is like an extremes from of sarcasm. Sarcasm to the point of trying to get them to believe you. Just like when someone says something sarcastic, you know the truth and they don't. But in the case of trolling, you aren't just making fun of them, you are actually encouraging them, to be wrong. If you mean the guys who just, start an argument kind of thing, it's basically the same. You know you don't actually think whatever it is you said, you probably agree with the guy you are trolling, but he doesn't know that. He thinks you are the one who is wrong. See what I mean? Sort of?

I say that SNES wins, in history there have been a lot of movements where inventions were repeated. Like I would just be inspired by the remote to create a wireless console. It's true Genesis came up with those ideas faster but other gaming companies could've made it. What I just said now could be backfired at me with my support of SNES but people focus more on inventions instead of new gaming styles concluding to the fact that the gaming styles SNES made could've taken longer. Also SNES created the GREATEST mascots in gaming history in my opinion. It worked as if it was a comic company. These games have also inspired a LOT of people to make better versions of their games like from RPG in SNES, the most popular game on the net WoW (not really sure that it's still most popular) was made but new gadgets can't really inspire you to make better versions of it but you can only add better performance, like smartphones war that just increases performance and that's all there is to it. I would say SNES has won.

If we go on to actual game series debates, I request we do one (or maybe all) of the following: Metal Gear vs Splinter Cell Uncharted vs Tomb Raider Street Fighter vs Any other fighting game Saints Row vs GTA Sunset Overdrive vs Infamous COD vs Battlefield Minecraft vs um... That one game that's basically 2D Minecraft (it starts with a T I can't spell it) Rock Band vs Guitar Hero DDR vs Dance Central Just to name a few... And if I had to pick a side in this debate I would go with... Sega Genesis actually. It surprises me how interesting the console really is and I always been a Sega fan at heart.

Metal Gear > Splinter Cell. Period. It offers more adaptability instead of a simple "That's now how it was meant to be, game over." Also on CoD vs BF that would be a good one, though I think (and this is me as a CoD fan) BF > CoD. They put a LOT of stuff into play in BF that CoD doesn't such as destructible areas (You can't shoot that tree forever bro.) and even drop distance for your bullets.

Jason Higher so you say it is based of the concept not minecraft itself. As well as minecraft boils down to creativity and building, while terraria is much more action and loot orientated.

This was brilliant! I want to see much MUCH more of this platform. As someone that grew up with an NES and a Genesis, I LONGED for an snes but never got one until later. I still have all those systems, but I'll tell you, the one I crave to go back and play the most is the genesis. Sega has always been my favorite, every system pushed the limits of what the video gaming industry had to offer. They were far beyond their competitors when it came to tech and, in my opinion, even games. I think the thing that killed sega was the switch to CDs. They did it just a little too soon, even the the Saturn was an AMAZING system and pretty much only the "rich kids" had the sega CD. Not to mention the 32X. Granted those two add ons didn't have very many good games, but the concept was mind blowing as a kid. Sega TV was RIDICULOUS for it's time and internet capability? The internet was barely even a thing back then! Don't get me wrong, I loved Nintendo all the way up to the gamecube, smash bros melee remains one of my favorite games of all time, but if Sega had been able to hold on through that rough patch I have no doubts they'd be leading the industry right now.

They sadly made some stupid business decisions in the 90's that really killed off 70% of the company :( Sega has kind of invented Arcades in the 50's/60's which is a pretty unknown part of their company history. In the 90's they have tried TO many R&D things to keep their products interesting, but sadly those decision only steered them in the wrong direction... If you like history like this, I would seriously advice you to read The Ultimate history of video games by Steven L Kent.

Furthermore I think it would be better when bring up stats have them show up in a list on each side of the screen so it is easier to compare and see how much of a difference there is. Also I think that sales numbers could help the arguments as no matter how much new technology something has, it needs to be bought in order to inspire others to follow their designs. Anyway great show just a few ideas to make it even better.
