When I first started trying to make games, I tried raw programming, no engine. Turns out that's really hard and I'll never do it. Next I looked for a freeware engine, because I wanted to get some real experience before putting down money. Gamemaker was the very first one I tried, thanks to Undertale. I didn't like the UI in a lot of ways, so I searched around a bunch, but I never found one better, so I came back and tried to get used to it. I kinda did, but I'm very glad GMS 2 is here. Much better everything.

Thnx for the comparison video. Great to know the changes, as someone that came into the fold straight away with GMS2. Bought the 1st license to it like 1.5 months ago, and I never regretted it. As my first attempt and hands on to making a game I'd say its pretty intuitive and fun. Got the first videos up to my game too on my channel. I was always curious though what was the change and if I missed out on something with GMS1.x. Sure, it still has some bugs with DnD which is what I work with more (not exclusively, but I work more with that and love the fact that the flow is like programming yet without me having to remember each function and I just drop it in), but its to be expected and there are some simple tedious workarounds for it. For the most part though, I am having a blast. The only thing is I am starting to feel it is starting to get a little "clogged" up is the amount of objects, assets, etc that I have in the project. Which is strange since really compared to a full game I really haven't even scratched the surface. Hasn't created big problems yet, but I am keeping my eye on it to see how it pans out. Thnx for the video Spaudling... :P Just kidding, Spalding:D Keep em coming. I have on occasion been finding my way to your videos to get ideas for some things (GMS1.x mostly sure, but I do the logical transition myself and for the most part, you are giving me a logical way to think about something and I can then go on about doing it in my own way that also makes sense to me and works for the game). So thnx a lot for these videos.

The big reason I'm not super-keen on getting in on GM2, besides the price, is that I'm worried that a chunk of the tutorials I've been using are gonna be deprecated and there's not gonna be nearly as massive wealth of resources for beginners as far as GM2's concerned. Is that a reasonable worry or is GM2 actually so close to GM1.X that it doesn't matter?
@RiddlerFoto

I have both, GMS1 & GMS2. I didn't really start any project with GMS1, so I'm going through Shaun's tutorials with GMS1, before heading into GMS2. It's nice to have, especially if you can't afford to get GMS2 or GMS2 Web just yet (if you're looking to export to html). Once I'm done with a lot of tutorials, I hope to head into GMS2 strong. I do want to make some HTML5 games with GMS1 though, while I have it. The camera feature in GMS2 though is very nice. I did their basic tutorial, and it was neat. I think it helps create rooms easier, and there's a lot of options with it.

I read the IDE was made in C#. I tried for 10 years to have my co-workers at least LOOK at Delphi and they all laughed at the suggestion. Then one day C# came out and they swooned after it, calling it the greatest. I decided to hold me tongue and not tell them that C# WAS Delphi with a C syntax.

I think the main benefit of workspaces is no more modal crap that you have to back out of, instead everything is flat, and second to that is you can visually refer to multiple things at once, and potentially drag and drop more easily between things.

if anyone sees this, i have a game i was making, i used the whole "depth = -y" thing to make that work because its an RPG style game, its a randomly generated map, and every tile in the game is its own instance. it was working fine in GM1 but when i updated it to GM2, my tiles took a while to show up graphically... i then removed the depth = -y but that only helped a little, im still getting the visual bug.

Good information! The only other comment I would add is by going to GMS2, you'll be left with limited tutorials in the new version. Meaning most of the information on the web to learn GMS was done in a previous version. With that said, much of the learning you'll do in GMS1.4x is transferable to GMS2 and there are newer tutorials being released daily on GMS2. I'm hoping to learn more from the veterans like Mr. Shaun Spalding!

Yes! Your comment to workspaces and so on hits the nail on the head, although personally for me its even worse. I just cant use the new UI, especially the workspaces. It feels horrible and is the main reason I didnt switch to 2.0 yet. Also that the demo version is so limited and the normal version so expensive is the main reason why noone wants to start with GMS now if he didnt use it before 2.0 anyway.

I have a question, when you talk about scope, would it be tricky to have a selection of like 100 enemies, each with different resistances to stuff like knockback etc. etc.? Is the main issue that you simply kinda lose track cause you can't, say, sort enemies by these values and adjust from there? I use very traditionally gamey and almost cliche elements like the ones old Zelda and Metroid consist of, but on the other hand, I want to use them in somewhat strange ways that involve scope in some areas. This is unrelated, but how would it handle true or pseudo-3d elements like throwing bombs over 3d axis in Zelda?

While there is a bit of a learning curve when you switch over to GMS2, basically everything is better. I've been using it since the second week of the beta, and while some fundamental changes were annoying at first (I'm looking at you, camera functions), every change was for the better, without exception. I even got used to workspaces eventually. My biggest advice is: while automatically converting your old GMS1.4 stuff works just fine, it's a crutch and you're better off learning how everything now works in GMS2 ASAP. Once you learn that, you can actually still use 95% of the old GML tutorials as long as you keep in mind which parts are the 95% mostly-unchanged parts and which are the 5% completely-different parts. EDIT: That's assuming you're NOT in the middle of a project. I was, and I decided to switch, but it's not for everyone. I recommend against switching in the middle of a project, but as soon as your current GMS1.4 project is done, go get GMS2 and learn it right away.

From my rudimentary understanding, the software is made in C# and said software allows you to edit GML (like how Scratch lets you use the block things but the site is obviously not made out of those) OR gml is a rendition of C# and thats why gm2 can edit it. Don't quote me on this though, but the final game is definitely made in gml and not C#.
