I don’t actually know whether or not you realise this, but this channel, and the topics, but more specifically the way that you talk about them, you cover things, psychological moments that other people don’t think to mention, and it’s very helpful. Case in point, convincing yourself that you want to play a harvest moon game because you take a notion for it, only to discover later, or have a realisation that you don’t actually like these types of games, and the notion suddenly leaves as the realisation hits you think what am I doing? I don’t like these, why am I trying so hard to meet it half way, when there are other games I don’t have to work to like. Now this kind of thinking resonates with me and I find that you are really intuitive about yourself with self analysis and the psychology of gaming. Not enough people talk about these elements. Good video, well done and I too am in the very same quandary with octopath traveler at the moment. Keep digging into the psychological elements like that I would say because it does suit you to talk about these bundles of thoughts and feelings that you have to untangle to really understand clearly how you feel about a game, and it’s working well for the channel too it seems. Keep it up.

In Octopath its crucial to get the 2nd jobs, and then from there really try to stack the team so all elements are covered. When your characters have 2 jobs they can do so much more. Understand who hits hard who heals and who is in the middle. I bought it when I got my switch years ago, and I found it super hard as well but always wanted to get through it.

The characters in Octopath Traveler not interacting in each others stories is one of the biggest design blunders in modern gaming history. Recruiting a character just to watch them in a cutscene that acts like you’re not there was totally immersion breaking for me. As a big fan of the Bravely Default and Octopath Traveler games, I have finished them all but I do think their difficulty spikes are possibly their greatest flaws. Obviously there are a bunch of people across the Internet who have finished them just as I have, but everyone else I know in the real life dropped them all right around where they became too demanding and expect you to have a very good understanding of all the possible ability combinations. I think they'd really benefit from some difficulty options, or maybe even just a more traditional set of optional challenges for the people who want them rather than asking for near-perfection three quarters of the way through the main story. All that said, Octopath Traveler II does do a much better job of this than any of the rest of their games, only getting very difficult with the final bosses and even then not as much so as the others.

I don't know how exactly you were playing Octopath but the main "right way" to play it is in going in circles. Literally. 1 circle - 1st chapters of all the characters, gathering them. 2 circle - 2nd chapters of all the characters, by fast-traveling to the nearest city, taking the character of the corresponding chapter and making your way to the required city. And so on. For the most part, you won't need any grind going like that. Especially if you explore optional locations of appropriate level and do side quests. I would also recommend getting all the 2nd jobs in-between 1 and 2 chapters and trying matching them to first jobs. Octopath 2 is a great game, with some characters outright amazing but my issue for actually dropping it was... Now, not all characters have the same "recommended level" for their chapters, like, some have chapter 3 at lvl 31 and some on lvl 37, some have different amounts of total chapters and some just for the sake of it have a few chapters with the same number... Not only is it nonsense but it also became boringly easy around 3rd chapters. As much as I love Temenos, I don't know how to actually play that from start to finish.

@@femtrooper yea, I think I gave up on Octopath around 5 times too at first. But just because I started with the thief and his 1st chapter is as boring as it gets... It was maybe only before the last attempt, that I actually researched a bit to find info people shared as: "I wish I knew befor starting the game" and actually finaly understood some things, so going into the game got much more enjoyable. After that I only struggled with 4 advance job gods challanges... because doing them before 4th chapters is kinda too early. But honestly, if you would prefer easier experience with more getting into the series mechanics and better(mostly) stories, I do agree that second one may be better. Even if I found half of the mechanics unnessasery with how easy game is...

I had a very similar reaction to Octopath Traveler; they nailed so many things that I like about oldschool JRPGs, but they completely dropped the ball on what actually *matters* to me in that kind of game: the story and how the characters relate to it and to each other. Just as you say, it looks amazing and the battle mechanic is really clever, but those don't matter much when there's no reason for using them other than to use them.

You describing Final Fantasy VIII is me on FF VII. I own it on PS1, PC, PS3, and PS4. I enjoy it and really get into it but I always seem to die out at the part where Aerith is leading you back to town if I remember correctly. From what I was told that's barely into the game lol but I try and try. This time around I got the old Brady Games strategy guide as guides usually help me finish games. Its been working with Tales of Symphonia and countless others I have as I have somewhere around 100+ guides. For me I'm very old school so I rather have a physical copy of a book in front of me than a youtube video walkthrough or a gameFAQs walkthrough. Had to do the same with Legend of Zelda BoTW. Started that game 4 times now and made it a goal to finish that game this year but last time I played it I finally got off the tutorial section of the map and made it the north west part of the map and then fell off. Keep getting told its just a game your not into its ok but that's not it as I really enjoy the story I just jump to another game and then never seem to make it back to that one. But with guides it helps push me through them not because I'm not enjoying them but rather to make me focus on them.

There appears to be an anti-backlog/play-only-what-you-like sentiment that's quite prevalent on this platform I find, and rightfully so. It seems many people grow up, time becomes increasingly valuable, and so fleeting dalliances with games is normal. Oddly I seem to have this backwards; whereas in my younger years I would rent games, play them briefly, bounce off them, I now am usually quite hellbent on finishing what I started. Even if there is suffering, even if I frankly don't enjoy some of the game, the sense of reward at the end is more than just beating the game for me; it's being able to look back and realize I committed to something and stuck through it, no matter what. It's the reason I generally avoid online games; I want to be able to roll credits, but down the controller, and bask in some end-cut-scene music. In other words, I strongly relate to your resistance to dropping games. To me, it feels like I was too weak somehow, that I failed myself. Needlessly dramatic, I know, but that's how I feel. As for Alien Isolation, it's my favourite survival horror game of all time. I found parts of it brutally difficult, and for its genre it is a very long experience. But the atmosphere, the oppressive nature of the experience, is just top notch. It's like an anti-power fantasy, where you are but a little rodent scrambling to survive. I often stare out the window at the star, and it's so eerie and makes you feel so small. It does the source material more justice than any other piece of media I have ever consumed. Anyway, I love your channel. You seem genuine and non-pretentious, a refreshing change of pace from the stereotypical sweaty try-hard gamer. Keep up the great work!

Increasing the level req AFTER being a chapter is so trash to me. I skipped Octo 1 and went straight to 2. I finished it at 80 hours and I had to put it down and pick it up several times. If you play it the way it seems the game wants you to, you'll be advancing all the characters stories at the same time which kinda gives it a disconnected short story feel. It was alright. By the end I was having a hard time keeping track of the plot of each character's story. The combat was just making sure your party has all the weapons/elements and then spamming BP increasing abilities/consumes with buffs up to finish a fight in 1-2 turns.

I couldn't believe how small Torren IV turned out to be! If you want to see R&C at its best, play Going Commando or A Crack in Time. Paige, I think for me personally. Every game that I've ever played is a test of patience especially as a video game completionist. Sometimes when my patience is tested it can lead to a very pleasant gaming experience or a very frustrating gaming experience but I do it as a personal test to myself with regards to what I can handle and what I can't handle. I don't think I've ever hit a point in my life where I outright dropped a game to never play it again. Every game that I play is a game that I intend on completing and permanently retiring but there have been quite a few games that I have had to put down because of a frustrating completionist requirement, I still intend on getting back to it but I would much rather be playing something else. As we get older, I think we have a greater appreciation of free time and knowing full well that we may not have as much free time as we think we have, so we often have to prioritize on the things that make gaming enjoyable to us. I think for me deep down I'm just a glutton for punishment and I like to test myself on if I can actually complete a specific game while ignoring a lot of other great games that I could be playing but I take a lot more personal pride in my gaming life by completing a mediocre game rather than simply playing and beating a bunch of excellent games but at the end of the day it's a matter of personal taste. At the end, your well versed on what you like and what you enjoy with regards to your personal gaming interests and as long as you feel fulfilled and content with what you play, what you drop, what you enjoy, and what you can't tolerate then that is what matters. Unfortunately for me with regards to whatever game I play, it's either complete it or bust whether I like or not - that eventually leads to a no drop rule for me.

Maybe I should give it a try., I love Doom so... 6: I've been looking for that game from my local GameStop every time I walk in... They still don't have it,.. I can get order it online I guess. I wanted to try it, but naw, I'm not goonnaaa dooo itt!! 7: Last Harvest moon game... geeez... I usually stick with games that are pick up and play, rather than huge time sinks, grinds, or difficulty spikes. Games were most approachable during PS2 era, which is why Nintendo is killing it now with traditional titles. Not everything needs to be Dark Souls tough, including dating after 2020! Oops, I’ve said too much… 😬

Final Fantasy 8 I have similar feelings about. I remember being so excited about it when it came out but never finishing it. I tried it again about 2 years ago and I just wasn’t feeling it, I really tried to get into it, maybe I’ll have to try it again too. I really need to start collecting newer games again, I watch videos like yours and HappyConsoleGamer’s and feel like I miss out. All of these are 10/10 in my opinion: Final Fantasy VIII, Final Fantasy X-X-2, Octopath Traveler 1 & 2, Rotchet and Clank: Rift Apart I respect your opinion. it is shocking to me that games that I love and are 10/10 in my opinion someone else doesn't like and dropped. I highly suggest that you stay away from classic RPGs becasue all of them are grindy. I grow up with those classic RPGs so I enjoy it. old days RPG games didn't have easy mode and bosses were very hard you had to grind for hours to levelup, gather money and materials for crafting. these days there are easy mode or even story mode which requires minimum effort to go through the game. It is ok but there is no enjoyment in that in my opinion. That's why some people like sub-RPG ganre "souls like RPGs" overcomming the challenges are rewading and thats where the enjoyment comes from.

I have a really strange history with Final Fantasy 8. I had it back in the day but could only play up to the first disc change because the 2nd disc of the copy I had never worked. Disc read error every time. I don't know what the problem was because I bought it new. Anyway, Fast forward to a few years ago/present day and I have it on PC through steam. No more disc read errors right? Well now I get to where I remember the first disc change was and for whatever reason I lose interest in playing further. Its like my mind says "Ok. Thats the game." even though I know there are many more discs worth of game left. Its a weird mental hurdle that I still haven't figured out how to overcome.

What you did with FFX I did with Lunar 2, but with the final boss lol. I always planned to beat it at the time and never got back to it until a few years ago and replayed the entire game and beat it. As for FF8, I read a comment you left while I was looking to see if anyone mentioned the junction system and yea you kinda need to click with that system. However lots of people didn't click with it either, so it isn't you thing and it's a counter intuitive system to a degree. Once you figure it out, you'll feel dumb for not understanding it, but then realize to the most out of the system you gotta "DRAW! DRAW! DRAW!" and it saps the fun out of the game and you can't use the most powerful spells in the game unless you want to handicap yourself via stats. I will say this, if you like the characters and story, you should finish it via cheesing the card game to get OP. However if you found the story to be alright, I think just Youtubing it would be better.

It’s a struggle because I’ve had experiences with shows, movies or games where I’m not that impressed or get frustrated halfway through but when it’s all said and done, the experience was actually rewarding on the whole. If I had quit watching Twin Peaks during the season 2 slump I never would have watched the movie or season 3 which were incredible. At the same time, I wish I had stopped playing Ys Book I and II because it just wasn’t for me.

Hail, Femtrooper! Great dropped games list. I myself love Final Fantasy 8, I learned to love it over the years, its easily my favorite of the PSX trilogy (7, 8 and 9). FF8 is a game that's meant to be broken and exploited, moreso than any other FF game, like, its designed to be played in quite a few different ways. If you want an easy time with the game, learn Quezacotl's "Card Mod' ability, and turn enemies into cards (at low HP), instead of striking a killing blow. You'll win the battle, get a card and wont get any XP - this is how you exploit FF8's "low/no level game". Some bosses may still be tough, but overall, imo, this is the game's easy mode

*Turok 2: Seeds of Evil* Specifically, the N64 release. I already wasn’t having a good time with the game (despite liking it as a kid) but, on the level before the final boss, my “controller pak“ (AKA memory card) got corrupted. I had a choice between sucking it up and playing a game I wasn’t having fun with from the beginning or to move on to something worth my time. I’m sure you can guess which one I chose. *Xenoblade Chronicles X* Now this is a game I liked but it’s a long game. I played so much of it without anything else in between that, by around the halfway point, I hit burnout and put the game down, telling myself I’d get back to it after a small break. That was well over eight years ago. What sucks is I missed out on the online multiplayer because I wanted to finish the main story first. Now, with Wii U’s online service shut down, I’ll never be able to experience that mode.

yeah great shout. I have a few of those games myself.. Zelda BOTW is one such game. When I initially bought and played the game, it was the launch title, and I even bought the special edition with the sword which I still have. When I first started playing it, I was completely in love with it, but like you, I needed to take a break to play something else, and a couple of years would go by. Then I re-tried playing it and just couldnt get into it. Started a new game, still nothing. Tried again 6 months later and nothing. I really really honestly and for true love the game, but I just have a disconnect when I go to play it.. I will NEVER let go.. Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart just absolutely upset me and has been the biggest let down for me for Playstation 5. I have been a fan of the series since it debuted on PS2. R&C Up Your Arsenal is in my top 10 games of all time, so what it is my problem? Well, it is a series that has always had quirly writing and funny, satisfying characters. The series is brimming with personality! Rift Apart is littered with polical correctness. Rivet was a rude, aweful character who I did not like, at all. Clank had to go through the story with one arm because we have to accept disability apparently, and I do accept it, but why would I for a ROBOT! In fact, if there is a futute I can choose to not be disabled because of technology or science, then I will not be. That is not about tolerance, that it me improving my quality of life so why does Clank have to be without an arm? ...wow, that was therapeutic, thanks Paige haha

It is refreshing to hear about the games people dropped :) I have dropped: Yes, your grace. I don't like that the game forces me to see my favorite kid suffer and that there is nothing I can do about it. I made it half way and watch the rest on youtube. Xenoblade chronicles 1, 2, 2 torna and 3. I like the idea and the story is great. But the combat was too passive for me and it became to grindy. I booted it up the other day for an hour and nothing happen, except I completed 2 side quest, which made me understand that the gameplay is not for me. Rune factory 4 and 5. I played about 20 hours of Rune factory 5. I like the combat, the design of the world and characters are nice. But the city felt a bit bare, I don't like how decorating works (I am not alone in this) and I felt like I spend all my time cleaning up the farm, because of how quickly it generated stuff. But I had my fun, so it did not feel like a waste to have gotten it. But I prefer stardew valley if I am in the mood for a farming, life, dating sim.

I think I commented this last time round but I'm a big fan of dropping games. I don't even have to dislike it - if I've had a couple of hours of feeling just listless and meh about a game, it goes right in the bin. There are already more great games than I could ever possibly play, I don't want to waste my time on a game that leaves me feeling indifferent. A prime example is one I dropped recently - Fairy Fencer F: Advent Dark Force. It's an RPG/dungeon crawl of sorts, and it's not BAD but it's not good either, it's just...a game that exists. I got about halfway through the game and I already felt impatient to be finished.

I can’t tell you how many games I have quit playing over the past 30 years because I could not get past a certain boss, area etc… it’s really frustrating, especially when you love the game. All games should offer an easy, medium or hard option and allow players to skip certain areas after numerous tries and failures. Days gone offered this and it was the only way I got past the hardest part. Otherwise I never would have finished the game.
